I currently have a Scout Traveler with a built 345, RV 727 built, Atlas 5.44, 68" dana 60 custom rear steer axle(6.17 rp), which I recently purchase. What would be my best option for a a front axle. My plan is to run 40x17 tires, and to use my stock springs. I am currently on the waiting list for the 4speed Atlas, so I have the option of going either way on the drop.

Option A:
Replace the RP on the rear steer axle
Find a HP Ford Dana 60 (1977.5 -1979 F-350, some F250) for the front axle
(As far As I know the Ford HP those years only goes up to 5.13)

Option B:
Leave the rear steer axle the way it is
Find a axle that will make the adaption to to scout easier, but that will not be a High pinion. (??Dodge, Chev, Ford)

What full width axle would best fit my application as a full time wheeler, who plans on putting ing 35 spline axles and Hysteer on the front axle, to match my rear axle.

I am also concerned with my overall width, so I need to figure what wheel I will need to use to stay as narrow as possible without suffering in turning radius, and or problems with my steering hardware. I am planning on running beadlocks, and need to know what I should run my backspacing at to avoid the mentioned problem issues.

Also, if i put a Dana 60 up front is it possible to avoid the cut and turn of the axle housing, or am I just asking for problems.

Thanks..

With a rear that bling why not just build a front to match it?

Or get the first D60 front you can, cut/turn/build it and get the atlas to match.

They make a 5.89 gear for the Ford D60. I would go that route as it will help you driveshaft angles in the front as well as give you better strength in the R&P over a 6.17 gear.

I am by no means a GURU, but call Atlas and they can set you up with a SPECIAL t-case. They just regear the front output so you don't have to change diff gears.

With a four speed atlas and an auto why do you need lower then 5.13 gears? If you use 5.13 gears you can use any 60 you want. If you are runnin 40's I would go 35 spline chromo's and ctm or longfields.

What axle will make the swap easiest? FORD_DODGE_CHEV. I want a kingpin, and don't want to have to deal with putting a perch on the housing. I also was hoping to find out what backspacing I could run to keep my rig as narrow as possible, but yet not compromise my steering.

Hope fully someone has some informations.

Thanks

Another idea. Make the rear axle your front and get a D60/70 rear?

Remember I am in a traveler, and having the rear steer help me out more that taking the easy road, plus I have everything for ram assist in the front.

I have a Chev D60 and before I 4 linked it I just bolted it to the leafs. The spring perches on the d60 were like 3/16 off but I just pulled the leafs into the holes and cranked them down tight. My driveshaft angle suffered some but I put one of Tom Woods high angle U joints up front and it cleared fine. As for width??? Your cutting and narrowing any way you go so you might as well find a Ford high pinion and weld some perches after you narrow it IMO
