Need to get rid of the mechanical fan on my 2.5. What fans have you tried and to what success?

I used dual fans out of a Nissan Maxima. I took the shroud and all, had to do a bit of trimming here and there to get 'em to fit, but they fit... My TJ is a daily driver and I haven't had any cooling problems with it since I added the electric fans...

In fact, I just got back from a trip to KY (from Atlanta), it was a 360 mile trip each way in 95ish degree weather with no problems...

I assume that this would work for a 4L? Or would you need something to pull more air? I was thinking of using the fan and shroud from a ford (lincoln). Looks to be about the right size. Any input on this?

That looks sweet Dave, I will file that Maxima tidbit away somewhere. :D

I use a single electric fan from a Pontiac 6000, mounted to the 21"x19" two 1" core aluminium radiator in the CJ grille I put on my '95 4cyl YJ. That fan will suck a shop rag off my winch mount and through the grille, keeps my hopped up 4Bangler cool on even the hottest days. I wired my fan direct to a ignition switched hot in the harness, but it needs a relay, when I shut the Jeep off, the fan becomes a generator and backfeeds my ignition, so the Jeep runs for 30 seconds or so after I take the key out.

Yesterday I changed the serpentine belt on my daughter's 99 Grand Cherokee with the 4 L six cylinder engine. Guess what? It uses a great big electric fan complete with shroud. I would look first to see if it would possibly fit the TJ virtually as is. If so, I would shop for one of those at late model yards. If it cools adequately for a Grand Cherokee, it should work on a TJ with the same engine.

What years (appx) on the pontiac and the nissan. As we have no pick and pulls up here that I have found. I have to go the regular junk yards and ask for something specific.

The grand has a nice fan, but up here if you mention Jeep, you get charged more than its worth.

Thanks all for the info.

The Nissan was an 80's model 6 cylinder, '86 sounds about right, but it was over a year ago and I really didn't pay much attention to what year it was...

I like it. It's on my list for grabs for this Saturdays trip to the pull-n-save.

I'd been thinking of fabbing up a shroud for the OEM fan on my '69, but this will save some time and might cool even better. Typically, the Dauntless isn't that difficult to cool, but when running slow on a hot day, I see it start creeping up there.......

Thanks

Not to replace a mechanical fan but since it's a fan thread I thought I'd throw this in. I added this because with front mounted tranny/p-steering coolers I thought a little more trail speed air flow couldn't hurt.

I grabbed it off the front of a Toyota Corolla at the u-pull it. It isn't factory but a replacement for Factory. It's only about 1-1.5" wide and it's really hard to find pusher fans that fit nicely behind a winch and mount easily to the grill. It matched up perfectly with some of those 1" rubber lined metal hose mounts (with the bolt hole) around the grill.

Very funny :flipoff2: but I am looking for a primary fan to rid myself of the mechanical one. It is phase one of the many changes to come.
