Heard a few things about locked front ends and driving in snow. So far, the consensus is either I won't be able to steer or it will just pull a little and I'll have to deal. Just looking for thoughts and experience.

It'll go fine in the snow, the only thing is you will have to go slower. It'll be squirrelly, but you'll still get there.

It's not bad, but it takes a little getting used to. You wont notice it if you dont have 4wd engaged, and worst case you can always unlock a hub

Unlock a hub? He never mentioned what the rig was or what axle he is running. Considering that this is Jeep-non hardcore, it would be safe to assume that he doesn't have the option of doing that.

Willing to bet there are more locked D30s out there in YJs and TJs without hubs than there are with. Who wants to guess why? :D

If you have a disco front you could do a posi lock or similar to disengage one wheel. Similar to unlocking one hub.

drive slow and don't let someone else drive it in the slow

I drove mine locked front and rear plenty of times, kept it in 2wd unless I was pulling a hill.

You better get used to drifting a little. You try and turn and it wants to push forward. SOO.. you blip the throttle to rotate the jeep then ride the drift while blipping the throttle to get through the turn. But I had a rear locker also and it was interesting sometimes in the snow/ice

my girlfriend will hate me for doing that, but i'll still be ok. i just got a locker for the rear too, so i would be in your situation as well. it sounds like it's doable. can't really afford the locker yet, but it's on the list.

ding ding ding! i didn't feel like getting ripped apart for starting a thread in the hardcore forum for a relatively noob question. and yeah i forgot to mention my rig. it's a 98 xj with a stock hp d30 front axle. no option of locking hubs (without an axle swap). it would be nice to be able to do that, but oh well.

Well, technically you CAN get locking hubs for your XJ without an axle swap, however these are relatively weak. Personally I'd rather stick with no hubs than these, but it depends on how you drive and what type of terrain.

hm. makes sense that they'd make something like that. agreed, i can't see it being very strong.

i'll be keeping it open for a while. we'll see what i feel like i need after i throw in the no-slip in my rear.

I've been through 2 winters with my Aussie and never had a problem. Slow down and use your head n should be fine.

Mine drifts occasionally at higher speeds. It doesn't push while turning unless the rear is locked.
