Here's the prob. I've got a sloppy housing:( The axle is out of the truck, and the long tube moves up/down in the housing. The housing seems to have gotten ovalized a bit. I wanna narrow it about 6" but not sure if I can still use this axle.
Is it garbage?? It's a high pinion I want to swap for my EB axle.
Any suggestions from anyone familiar in this area??
How crutial is the 'press' fit part?? Can the tube be welded around the housing where it goes in (to the cast)??

I honestly don't know, but my gut says it's junk. Personally if I was going to spend the time and money cutting down an axle, I wouldn't want to start with a POS base. High pinion 44 are relatively easy to find, I say spend the $200 and get another.

Replace the housing. You might be able to repair it and it might hold. However, to get it straight and strong as a good one will cost you more than a good one and you'll still have a repaired front housing.
