: How critical are control arm lengths?

Tried asking this on other boards and all I got were blank stares from the chrome muffler tip crowd. Here's the deal, I have 4.5" of lift in my XJ, have a set of RE superflex lowers (not yet installed) that measure 16" eye to eye. I found that ideally a 4.5" lift the lower arm would be 16.5" so my question is how much difference will that 1/2" make. I'm not concerned with the castor or any other alignment because I'm building my own adjustable uppers and will build them to fit. Right now I just want to know if that 1/2" will make any difference in articulation or anything OR will it just be a waste of time to extend them that little bit?

Total waste of time....Put them on there, and adjust with your uppers....:D

I belive the 16.5 is what Im runing on my old XJ lift with 4.5in but the lower arm is extended to correct the caster angle! I agree you should get uppers that are adj but if your still at 4.5in Id keep the lowers at 16.5in and the uppers at stock length, The adj upper jsut lets up fine tune it.

Well, it looks like you got your answers so I am going to steal your thread now :flipoff2: :D

I will soon have 5.5 inches under my MJ (same front as XJ) and I have some RE adjustable uppers that I will use to adjust castor. I will be making some fixed length lowers, so how long should I make them? I'm thinking 16.75".

Also, what is a good guess for upper ca length? (maybe I'll get the castor right first try:) )

Yeah I'm not going to cut, sleeve and weld over 1/2" bah!!!!

I have this chart I wrote down for general control arm lengths it doesn't list 5.5 but at 5" it says 16 5/8 for lowers and 15 1/4" for uppers. At 6".... 17" for lowers and 15 1/2" for lowers. Yeah I could have done the math and figured the difference for you but tooo dam lazy.

Thats cool, can you scan in the chart or post it some way.

Why make fixed lowers, make them adj, then you can later still use them if you add more lift.

have fun

Here you go, don't know how accurate it is but so far it seems pretty close.

Lift......lowers.........uppers

4.5..... 16 1/2.........15
5.........16 5/8.........15 1/4
6.........17...............15 1/2
7.........17 3/8.........15 3/4
8.........17 3/4.........16
9.........18 1/4.........16 1/2
10.......18 3/4.........17

That's what I have written in wookie scratch, hope it helps.

Thanks for the chart. The reason I don't make the lowers adjustable is because I am actually just going to take the Rancho lowers I already have and cut and splice them to make them longer and to have an angle.
