: Heater box removal

I have been trying to get the @#%$^*& heater unit out of my '89 Rangie.

Something is holding it back on the left side. I can't see back there either.

Any ideas? When I first started this project, I thought "How hard can it be?"

It is ridiculous!

You've undone the hoses on the engine side right?

I cut those long ago and looped the line. But you have an interesting point. Perhaps one of the cut pieces is hanging up. Didn't think of that--its been a while. Thanks.

Do you have stubs of hose with hose clamps still on the barbs in the engine compartment? You're not gonna be able to get all that through the holes in the bulkhead.

It's not that big a deal if you remove everything from the heater first.

I probably do. I'll check tomorrow. Everything is off the unit in the front.

It was clamps. Any luck with aftermarket cores such as those from British Pacific/

If it is one of the brass ones, they can be recored fairly easily.

Recore is the way to go. The shop couldn't fix the leak, so they found a slightly wider and slightly shorter core that fit the tanks and it only cost $75. Foam taped it and in it went.

Now to acquire a new fan resistor. Any cross overs or other cheapo ideas?

you can build your own easy, you will need 3 resistors. i believe 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 ohms. you can get the resistors encased in aluminium (same as the ones aftermarket sell) for about 15 bucks total. take yours apart and wire it the same way.

What do you mean by this?

High power handling resistors are sometimes available with integral aluminium "heatsinks". The resistor assemblies available from some suppliers (AB, that I know of) are of this configuration.

'89s use a different resistor than the one AB sells. Its a good idea though. Anybody know the schematic for the '89 heater fan only resistor?
