: Jeep front axle (swap?)

Hello,

I have an '86 CJ7 (wide track) that I busted the crap out of. Truck has 4.56 gears, teralow 4:1 in a Dana300 (twin stick), and 38" tires. long story short, the front D30 axleshafts are both wasted, but I am having them RMA'd thru Superior, as they are the alloy 297x ujoint models. It's got 4.56 gears and a Lockrite, as well as the superwinch hubs.
But, the housing is wasted, actually the right side inner (upper) knuckle where the ball join mounts is split. I can either get a new housing and swap in all my parts, including re-welding my non-stock springpads and steering stabalizer pad, or I can get someone to weld a replacement knuckle on the right side.

OR, i can junk the D30, sell all the parts off it, and get a cut-down D44. But I won't have spare axleshafts, and will have the same ujoint, basically running the risk of breaking it again.

OR, I can try to swing a dana60 front end, but that would be totally custom, expensive, and probably couldn't get it together for at least 2 months.

Ideas, suggestions?

Hmmm...38's on a 30? I hope you weren't surprised it exploded. Why would the 60 be any harder than a "cut down" 44? A 60 might be a little harder to find, but I don't see it being too much more money than a 44. Sell off anything that you didn't grenade on the 30 to offset your new 60. Any reason you wouldn't want to go with a wider setup, assuming you don't continue to run a 30 on 38's? If you can go wider, why not get front and rear 60's. I would imagine this sounds a little bit excessive, but 38's on Stock axles just doesn't work (Espesially in a 4:1 setup)

Well, I have the Superior hardened tensile alloy axle shafts with the 297x Spicer dana44 U-joints, which are "guarantted not to break" for 2 years (i'm RMAing tomorrow), so I figured the only things that could break are the hubs (superwinch upgraded, looking into the warn w/ replacable fuses) or the R&P, which is pretty damn strong in only 4.56 gears.

That's why I can't justify the D44, as it uses basically the same strength axleshafts and ujoint, unless you spend even MORE money on alloy shafts.

Pricing D60's from 4x4 shops has came out to about 900-1200$ for the unit, $200 to cut tubes, $200 to respline (gotta find 5 on 5.5" shafts or buy wheels).
I'm going to call the pick n pulls tomorrow and see what they have, if i can get a D60 cheap, thats what I will do.

I can sell the locker, gears, spindles, axle shafts from the D30 to recoup losses.

But this is more of a rock-dirt truck than a mud truck, wheel spin is generally concidered "bad times" in washington. The way I broke the front-end was totally my fault, and probably wouldn't have hapened if my head wasn't up my A$$.

So right now, I'm gonna basically see whatever axle I can get the cheapest. I'm looking for anyone with similiar rig/experience. How hard is it to build the D60 for a CJ7 widetrack?

Just junk that crap john.. Yes, you might have hardoned shafts, but i have also see ntaht jeep eat one easily.. First off, you have a small ring/pinion.. Second, the shafts neck down for the d30, if you would like i can measure them for you, I have a broken axle in my shop from the trail run after I built the jeep.. You are comparing apples to oranges..

I wouldnt know where to start, cause I just dont understand the trail technology you would need for trails like your talking about. There was a dandy CJ for sale, a couple of days back, if my memory serves me right. Some of the guys from your area, seemed to think it would be great for your kind of trails. You could maybe use it as a donor for your axle swaps. :flipoff2:
