: Bumpers
enduro4231 03-03-2008, 05:19 PM Can some of you post the weights of your front and rear bumpers?
My custom bumpers for myself are about 150 lbs. front and 150 lbs. rear. I had good clearance for 33's before I put them on, but now they rub alot.

Dude, this ones out of 1/4" even though I tried to persuade the guy 3/16 was sufficient and its only about 85 lbs. With the winch it is probably close to 150 lbs? A typical bumper I build is between 65-75 lbs with the d rings and clevices.
enduro4231 03-04-2008, 12:06 PM Hm, I'm probably overexaggerating then. My front is 4" .25 channel with .25 plates top and bottm, and the hoops are .25 1.5" dia. tubing (It was what was left over from a previous job), and the rear is .25 4x6 square tubing with .25 end caps/mounting tabs, 2" receiver and D rings. The front sure as hell feels like 100 lbs. and it compresses my suspension about 1.5". The rear compresses about .75-1"
hitech_hick 03-04-2008, 12:07 PM I threw together a bumper out of 6"x6"x1/4" wall square tube reinforced with 3/8th inch plate (complete overkill, I know) and it came out around 120#'s, closer to 200#'s with the winch.

PICS?
hitech_hick 03-04-2008, 07:42 PM PICS?
It's on my Mazda (RBV), but the size is about the same as a jeep, and a lot of the Ranger guys rework TJ bumpers to the front of their rigs.

TJOGRE 03-08-2008, 02:59 AM My little effort, weighs maybe 30lbs at the most.

not exactly suitable for your guys demands i guess, but suits fine for what we get up to here! :smokin:

Very Nice Bumper.
HUSSLR187 03-09-2008, 08:02 PM Very Nice Bumper.
4x3x.25 i think 42" long with .25 angle iron welded to it for mounting. it weighed somewhere around 40 to 50lbs and it tested to be more than strong enough so far. of course i dont have as much coverage as most and im thinking about shortening it and going fenderless

I definitely like it; short, sweet, and to the point, no extra bullshit...:smokin:

Thanks, this one gets the most attention out of all the ones I've built. I'm actually gonna do a production run of them and see how fast they disappear......................

cheers (and to noahjeep too). Cost $20.00 for a sheet of scrap treadplate, of which ive used 1/8th. Tube was offcut and free. brackets are just bits of steel i had floating about. Bent and welded it myself, the most expensive bit was the paint... all up theres a... maybe.... $30.00 bar. (not including my time to play with it to put it together) Beats paying in excess of $2000.00NZD for an ARB one!!!
(and the winchplate i made out of scrap too, i got an engineering outfit to measure and cut it, which they cocked up.... that cost me a total of $70.00)
97jeeptj 03-10-2008, 05:46 PM I just put this together for a guy, I've built a few of these now. I'd say they are overbuilt, and they do not weigh 100lb yet. I use 1/4" for top plate, and 1/4" bottom plate, then 3/16" everywhere else. This jeep has a body lift, and the bumper is for a jeep with no body lift if you are wondering about the gap.
enduro4231 03-10-2008, 05:59 PM Hm, maybe they aren't as heavy as I think. I have stock Rubicon springs in my '98 TJ and RE 2" coil spacers w/ swaybar disconnect. When I bolted on the bumpers I built, it looked like I had never put the coil spacers in.

leverage is the reason for that. the further an object is from the center of the wheel the more exaggerated the sag in the springs are.
if you have a 2" receiver on the front and a rack for a 2" reciever, one thing you can do to see what i mean is first try putting a winch on the bumper and measure the bumpers height. then put the winch on the farthest forward point on the rack for the receiver hitch and take your measurement again.
enduro4231 03-10-2008, 06:55 PM thank you. Guess I'll have to build them lighter this time.
97jeeptj 03-11-2008, 05:50 AM Here is another, this jeep has a 1" body lift, so raised the ends to match the fender line. This combo did indeed lower the front of the jeep slightly, but with the winch and lots of steel, that is to be expected.
