: Turbo upgrades for common rail diesel?

I have 2006 dodge quad cab with a 325hp/610tq common rail cumins and am looking into turbo upgrades. I would like to get a single that spools faster than stock but still produces more boost than stock. Reliabilty is what i am after. I occasionally tow a camping trailer prolly weighing no more than 6k. I am thinking about doing the ats aurora 3000 turbo with the 2 piece ats exhaust manifold. Anyone have this turbo? What do you think? I would like to get more power an better throttle response without loosing reliabilty. I dont race or sled pull so i dont need a huge single or twins even though they would be fun. I already have a tuner, afe stage 2 intake, and 5 inch exhaust. But i feel this is the best way to get more power while keeping egt's in check.
Any other suggestions?

I have an Industrial Injection Phat Shaft 62/14 on my 05 Dodge with an intake, exhaust, TST, and ATS exhaust manifold. I installed this turbo on the truck back when I worked in the performance diesel industry and the truck had 1300 miles on it (it know has 54000 miles). It has served me well. I am not a fan of the Aurora turbos.

62/12 maintains similar to stock spool.

62/13 SS with the higher hp numbers does a good job too

the 62/14 i thought was a little slow on spool up when towing at high altitudes. what killed it for me was the 5th to 4th shift with a decent trailer on a long grade and not being able to regain full boost before the EGT's would get beyond 1350.

High tech turbo, industrial injection all do a good job on turbos ATS in my opinion is over priced on some things

Asking what turbo without telling us what fueling mods your planning on limits the recommendations we can all throw out suggestions but we'll look like morons without asking for more details..

A couple of examples to consider

I run a 2003 HO 305/555 with a Smarty on Moderate torque setting and level 7, a Van Aken 3.1 pressure box is stacked with that. 4" exhaust and a AFE cold air intake. my stock turbo with the smarty on mild torque management level 7 couldnt keep it cool. so i installed a HTT 62/12. good spool up i then added the Van Aken and an ATS manifold still havent been able to get the EGT's above 1250 spool up is better than stock was. Adding the ats ex manifold increased spool up a little more and dropped egts a hair more. I then added a CFM intake and that also aided spool up and moved the torque curve down a little in the rpm range. all said i really like the setup spool up rivals stock and EGT's are already in check but my truck has two injection events yours has three.

My buddy with an 05 325/600 is running a smarty level 7 moderate torque 4" pipe and an AFE, stock ex manifold, CFM+ intake and a HTT 62/13 SS hard to tell the difference between our two trucks spool up wise mines a hair faster to spool up and mines cleaner at the tail pipe but his dynos 25-30 hp more than mine depending on the day.

oh yeah both are 6 spds with 3.73's and 315/70 R17's i tow a little more weight and in the high altitude mine tends to come out of the corners faster after a down shift or an upshift on a steep grade.

Good luck

Id consider a 62/14 and plan on a little more fuel. Like the smarty with the 4.11 tunes are killer. I know you already have a tuner though so the cheap route is to stick with that and get a 62/13.

I run an aurura 5000 single but I run alot of fuel and big sticks to spool it. I tow with it and what not and it gives me no trouble but I also have all the supporting mods. I have no experience with the a3k that your interested in. I would look into a htt if I was going for price. I got my a5k used so I saved a bunch of money.

Are you guys running the FASS fuel system with the Smarty?

I'm debating installing it on my rig, but $600 for the smarty + $500 for the fuel system is a bit hard to swallow.

What tuner do you have? How much power are you looking for? Any future plans/thoughts?

If EGTs are a primary concern already, have you tried a Smarty or Smarty Jr. I've been real pleased with the Jr on my 06. EGTs are down, plenty of power, moderate to light smoke. From reading on DTR, Edge and Quad boxes can get pretty toasty on EGTs.

I haven't gotten into turbo specifics in my research so far, but quicker spool and higher boost would seem to be opposites.

Do you have the supporting mods to handle more power as it is? Clutch/Trans, Fuel Supply?

I have a superchips flashpaq tuner now but plan on getting a smarty. I would install a fass with the turbo. I dont want to go with the tst because i hear in addition to creating alot of power they create hi egt's. I have 37's on my truck so when towing up grades i can easily hit egt's of 1200* and above. I would like to get more power lower in the rpm range and thas why i was hoping to get a turbo that spools quicker. Maybe twins are the best of both worlds. As far as the trans go's i will address that when i figure what i am doing to the motor so i know how far to go with the engine. Example: if i go with a single than i will just do a ats stage 3 trans but if i was to do twins than i would need more like a stage 5 trans.

So does anyone know of a single that will spool quicker but still make more power than stock?

No way for that to happen. Fuel upgrades will make the turbo spool faster. To make more power, a bigger turbo is going to be needed--one that can make more boost pressure efficiently.

I think with massive fuel upgrades AND a bigger turbo, you may find the performance you're looking for, but if low end grunt is all you want, especially with a load behind you, the stock turbo with a +100 HP program will get you there no problem.

I put an HTT 62/13ss on my 2003 HO, 6-speed. It spools very similar to stock, zero issues there! With a Quad Race pressure box and BDTD I cannot get EGTs over 1050 (pre-turbo of course). HTT says the 13ss spools like a 12 but flows like a 14. The best thing is that between shifts (manual tranny on my truck) it doesn't go straight to zero boost like the stocker did, it seems to have inertia on its side. I end up letting the clutch out at 10psi and we're off to the races.

What you need is some tranny upgrades (I dont mean fishnet panty hose) and a smarty. You will have plenty of get up and go. If the fuel is there down low you dont need to spool your turbo. My turbo doesnt read any boost till around 1800 rpm and I think my truck is in the high 12's. Havnt been close to a track to try yet. I think the truck is capable but I shift like a granny.
