: Sweet winch deal at Summit
Welby 10-02-2001, 10:08 AM Flimmy mentioned this to me, that in the newest Summit catalog you can get a Ramsey REP8000 winch with the roller fairlead for $499. Usually this price doesn't include any fairlead. Plus shipping is free. There a $6.50(?) handling fee, but that's it.
I know Warns are the winch of choice, but that seems like a pretty good deal to me. Too bad I'm too broke to even buy this one

Disco 10-02-2001, 10:11 AM That not a bad deal but the REP 8000 isn't that great. Try Leon Rosser. I got one from them for $400.00 a few years ago and the roller fairlead was included also. I now have the Ramsey Platinum 9500 and it kicks ass.
Welby 10-02-2001, 10:29 AM Just for the heck of it, I checked Rosser. they want $649.90 plus $39.95 shipping for it right now
That kinda makes the Summit deal look alot sweeter . $180 cheaper at Summit
FreakAccident 10-02-2001, 12:45 PM If you are gonna buy a cheapass disposable winch just get the $300 generic rep8000 from Harbor Freight. Same exact winch but with bushings instead of bearings. Even the parts are interchangeable.

Welby 10-02-2001, 01:06 PM Is it really that bad?? I'm not looking right now anyways, just figured I'd pass it on...
Glenn 10-02-2001, 01:07 PM Unless you are gonna be doing a lot of serious winching, the rep 8000 will do just fine. I ordered one for my runner. If I ever wear it out, then I'll upgrade but for now, that price is pretty darn good...

Yeah, you too. Flimmy said you guys were on the board, but I wasn't sure who was who
FJ4ZROX 10-02-2001, 01:34 PM I had a REP8000 about 5 years ago - cooked it on a 2x line pull the first time I needed it. Ended up having to get another truck in position to help me after I cooked it. Ramsey offerred to repair or upgrade. I switched to a Pro Plus 9k (which I sold for the faster HS9500).
Anyway - I would stay away from the REP series of Ramsey winches. Just my $0.02
I have seen every type of winch burn up, stall out, or cook on the spot - so that gets that out of the way
I have a Ramsey REP8000... have had it for 6 or so years. Slow as hell, but has always worked fine (even pulling a crouser with a burnt up Warn 9k up Guardrail in the rain )
i've seen a fellow trash his on the independence trail. some flexing of the gear case allowed the gears to "disendage" slightly. i have also heard of people running them with no problems. ymmv---brad
RoCkSkuLLz 10-02-2001, 01:52 PM I paid 399 for mine a couple years back from leon rossler... And yes they are a descent winch. Mine has never failed me and unless you need a super fast winch a REP8000 will be fine.

BabyWrangle 10-03-2001, 03:44 PM My roommate (Scott Freas on here) has rep8000s F/R on his Toyota. Its been fine every time we used it. Sometimes a little slower than you would want but its about the same speed as his crawl in 1st low so it suits him fine. The only time it has failed is when we submerged the rear one in muddy water and it got mud/sand/silt in it. Got back to his house and I took it apart and cleaned it. After it worked like the day he bought it. Not a bad winch for the price but of course the more money you are willing to put out, the nicer the winch you can get.
Fullreversal 10-04-2001, 11:00 AM does harbor freight even still carry the el cheapo? I dont see it on their webpage
