: What is this?!

In the picture below, what is the shock/cylinder looking thing that is attached center/rear of the light rack? Is it for in-cab adjustment or more of a shock to allow the light to fold back if something comes in contact with it?

I'd have to guess it's for adjustment since it has a single wire attached to it. If so, what kind of cylinder is that?

Wow, what am I missing. I don't even see where the center rod thingy is mounted to the roof. Even looking in the reflection I don't see a hard mount there.

didnt notice it till you said something. the connection is def. chopped out, but you can see it in the reflection on the roof.

I'm thinking maybe it's designed to collapse or break away in case of a rollover, to save the $$ linear actuator, and/or the $$$$$ rack of lights.

pfft ... lights are the least of that guys worries if that thing rolls. he probably has more money into that rig alone then you do in your entire 4wd career. them dezert guys like to throw down the cash.

It’s so he can park it in the garage, one push of the button and the lights fold down so they don’t hit the top of the door…

adjust on the fly, depending on the terrain.

according to the article he spends time at ocotillo, where you have a lot of people running around at night. its nice when people turn the lights off or adjust them so they dont blind you when you pass each other. 5 hids in the face is not pleasant especially when your eyes are adjusted to your rigs light output.

Build Alot of um... The class 10car has an actuator on the light bar.. Adjust it down in the slow stuff, and just give it a little up for the fast sections..:smokin:

It is there in the picture... it just blends into the background... if you at your monitor sideways, you can see the texture change line the is the edge. Cool set-up either way.

I didn't even notice that but that would help explain why I had such a difficult time figuring out what it was. Seeing the reflection in the roof helps make it more clear.

Thanks.

well judging by how shiny the paint on that thing is im gonna guess its a prerunner not a crawler. and when im hauling in a prerunner, shining my lights in someone's eyes is the least of my worries. not to be a dick but trying to keep the truck shiny side up is priority #1. now if im just cruisin i'd just turn them off. trying to adjust them out of someones eyes just sounds lame to me. if you set up youre rig properly you wouldent need to have adjustable lights. it just sounds like more crap to break down to me. but thats just my opinion. its pretty cool for a pavement pounder tough.

a pavement pounder as you phrased it would'nt be allowed according to any state law to have the lights mounted so high let alone have an adjustable rack.

Some of the faster trucks have them adjustable because of the truck's attitude at different levels of accelleration. My understanding is that when a truck is fully getting it, the nose of the truck is high, and the lights need to be lowered to be usable. If they are aimed to work well here, then at slower speeds, they would be aimed too low.

The actuators are a BIG benefit in the hills. Vegas to Reno....one silty hill was a parking lot. You could aim the lights up and look the whole hill over before giving it a try.

HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH STREET DRIVING.. It is so you can adjust the lights when your haul'n ass... Bring them down for the tight stuff, and up for the 130mph sections...

As far as that go's Put them on a crawler!! point them down off a ledge or Light up a big up hill.. Hell, you could light up the side of a hill when someones hung up. Pull your irg around trying to find a spot that will light up a hill is gay... Just tap the button and your putting the light where you need it!.. You don't have to hang them off the roof..(smashed in a roll) Hang them off the front and your golden.

thats y they invented flood and pencil beams. you have the pencil beams for the far stuff and the flood's for the closer stuff. if these racks are so good how come i havent seen one on robby gordons rig? nor terrible herbst or riverra or mc millen ect ect ect. i mean its a good idea in theory but i just look at the best in sport and see what they have. and i have not seen any on the top dogs rigs. i co drive in a class 8 truck, wrench on a class 1 car and am building a 1400 truck. none of the top vehicles in any of these classes have adjustable lights. as for the pavement pounders u can have lights as high as you want as long as theyre covered after 50" high (in california. i dont think arizona has any law against it)

oh and so there is no confusion, when i say pavment pounders. i diddent mean using the lights on the street i meant the rigs in general. as in trucks that are built to b pretty instead of really fuctional. disco trucks, wannabees, squids whatever u wanna call em. aulthough a good point was brought up about looking up a hill in a prerunner. a prerunner is desighned to PRE RUN a race. so u are familiiar with it for the actual race. you pre run in the day y would u do it at night. if u were going to take the time to adjust the lights to go up a hill you might as well install a monitor and internet as well so you can google earth it and see what is on the other side. lol. i know i cant spell good either so no jokes ok?
