: Wheel spacers= sheared wheel studs!
CHOKEu 07-10-2002, 12:48 AM I was backing up at the top of Walker Hill to let some people come up... SNAP- " OH, shit, don't tell me a 35 spline Dutman just snapped:confused: ????"
Nope, all five wheel studs on the axle, not the spacer.
My thoughts- It was probly my fault! I torqued the hell out of them. 1/2" studs should be 75-85 ft/lbs. Mine were probly around 110 ft/lbs.
These were the spacers that have their own wheel studs, not the kind that slid over the existing stud and use the same stud.
I can see some concern with using the ones that use the same or longer stud, but not the ones that bolt the spacer to the old stud and provide a new stud for the wheel to mount to.
SO I'm guessing this is a single shear and double shear issue(I'm not an engineer!)
So what do you think? DO you see any issues with the spacers that give you a separate stud to mount to?
I think the failure is my fault, not the spacer.
Here is picture of what I have and I think are the good design.
WheelingPiazza 07-10-2002, 04:39 AM Kev,
Were you using new studs? or the ones that came with the axle?
I know of a couple people that have had issues with non dana studs or cheap wheel studs. Dont know if that was the case in this situation or not but it sounds like you stretched the studs and they were weak to the point of breaking.
broncorob 07-10-2002, 07:58 AM What I think is a good possibility is that the lub nuts worked themselves loose on the spacer and you didn't realize it because they are behind the tire. Since you brought this up I'm gonna go out and check mine because I know I haven't done it since I put them on.
Depdog 07-10-2002, 08:28 AM I am no expert, but I would say its probably something you did. How wide are your spacers? I run the same ones, mine are 1.5" wide and I have a full size K5 with 36x14.5x15 TSL Radials on it. I am running the 1/2 ton axles and am not kind to them. Even with the weight of the ole pig on em and twisting them up in some major ditches and ramps, not to mention squeezing them between rocks and trees and crap on the trail. Mine have held up just fine.
Come to think of it a friend of mine had the same ones and the same axles, although he has 79 K5. His have held just fine as well, and he is running 38" TSL SX's.
O.k. all you flamers, go ahead. We both break front axle shafts and are looking for Dana 60 fronts, but DAUM are they expensive down here if you can find one.

those look like the performance whheel out if colorado unit.
i run a 2.5 spacer up front right now so my front is as wide as the rear. anyhow i tighten them every trip. it is a PITA since you have to take the wheel off. also the instructions tell you to check the studs that attach the wheel soon after you first install them because the studs will take a deeper seat in the aluminum than they ship them to you. also i have not had any problems with mine.

Ditto. I have the 1 1/4" performance wheel spacers on all four, and haven't had any issues.
WheelingPiazza 07-10-2002, 10:26 AM Except keeping hte tires on the ground :D
Travis Waldher 07-10-2002, 11:12 AM Is there a website where you guys got those? I'de like some 2-2.5" wheel spacers.
Depdog 07-10-2002, 12:20 PM www.performancewheel.com If thats not it, do a web search on performance wheel, or look in the back of the 4x4 rags, they have adds all the time.

CHOKEu 07-10-2002, 02:29 PM Mine were 1" thick- From Perfomance Wheel.
The studs came with the Dutchmans... I like the extra 1" on each side in the back. I think I am going to put them on with some good studs, like the Moser 190,000 lb studs:eek:
Oh, and I'm going to use a torque wrench this time;) :D :rasta:

I was running 2". Bent the all the left rear on the axle and the spacer one day, just replaces them. As far as the getting loose issue, I ran studs off the axle that were just long enough not to poke through the spacer and hit the wheel, then ran dual lugs on each stud. Never came loose again.
jp junkie 07-11-2002, 03:32 PM The spacers were probably loose. Aluminum wheels or spacers should be re-torqued at least three times.:)
