: Just how "budget" is your "budget AK build"?

I'm putting together my prices at this point, and it's looking like my budget AK build(s) will come in at $241.50 each, ALL inclusive pricing (shipping, fees, and everything), if I go with 100% receivers:

Romy G AK47 kits (2x).$215
Compliance kits (2x).....$70
Magazines (4x)............$48
NoDak Receivers (2x)..$110
FFL fees (2x)..............$40

TOTAL......................$483

Each.........................$241.50

all in all, that's more than I originally though it would be (originally planned on using flats) but still - IMHO - not too bad.

Anyone else want to share what they are into theirs for?

BTW, if I go the flat route, her's what I see happening:

Romy G AK47 kits (2x).$215
Compliance kits (2x).....$70
Magazines (4x)............$48
AK-builder flats (2x)......$35

TOTAL.......................$368

Each.........................$184

That's not bad at all :cool2:

Fwiw, you could have saved some money with different compliance parts and using a different ffl. I pay $20 at the local pawnshop for each time I get something, whether it be 1 reciever or five. And you can't really count the mags into the rifle cost... That should make you feel a little better. :flipoff2:

Dude, if you can get your ffl guy to move here, that's cool - but I can't find anything any cheaper, and I have looked.

The cheapest one I have was done for about $100, give or take a bit. I have over $250 in my milled Yugo, but most fall in the $150-$200 range ( trades excluded)

I wouldnt complain about a $250 AKM

EDIT: none of these are on 100% receivers

Well lets see...
$1.50 for the sheet metal for the flat.
$25 for the FCG, and piston at a gun show.
$75 for the kit at a gun show
$75 tapco furniture

This was Oct 06

You got a pattern for the sheet metal flat, w/ hole locations? I'd be game for trying that :D:D:D

Yikes, thats a lot considering I can find 7.62x39 Saiga's for $249 around here. One of mine is under $150 all said and done, but I made a pistol grip for it myself. The most expensive one was about $200 but thats because I built it off of one of the fold by hand recievers. (https://www.vbd.com/noc/shop/products_detail.asp?CategoryID=35&ProductID=276) but that was back when they were $39 each

Keep in mind that's with 2 mags included - so that puts is down to $217.50 for just the gun itself.

Yeah, a horribly mutated uber ugly or fixed magazine "gotta field strip to reload" abortion of an AK.

All 3 of mine are under 150. One doesn't have a compliance parts set though because it is planning on growing up to be a pistol.

Personally, after dry-firing my first build, I won't even think of building one without the G2 trigger. Even if I have to pay for a second trigger group and totally waste $30. That thing has a nicer trigger than a lot of bolt rifles I'ver fired, not to mention every other AK I've handled.

I was planning on polishing it before installing, but once it was in I was glad I didn't have time. I wouldn't want it much lighter in a fighting rifle.

You forgot to add the price of the bending jig rental. :flipoff2:

EDIT: That get's you down to about a $100 difference for two AKs. ($50 additional, each)

The question is how much is your time spent bending and the additional security (no paper trail) worth?

Sorry, just though I'd help you waffle some more. :flipoff2:

Google.
I do not have them on this PC so not sure on the file names. But yeah there are tones of flat blue prints out there. A little spray on adhesive and go to town.
Docs 9mm is built on a 1.50$ piece of 4140 sheet metal. He had to drill the center marked holes. I bought it from aircraftspruce.com
Think it was 12x6x.040

Saigas are going up in price, about 50$
Also as soon as you go to put a pistol grip on one you have to start looking at parts count.

A quick polish on all the surfaces and cutting back the hook a little is very nice. I am getting 4.5-5lb pulls on the ones I am building. I need to take the time to mod one for an overtravel set screw. I agree I wouldn't want the lighter, but I really like them

I have a plasma, and if things work out - my buddy down the street will have a plasma-cam CNC unit as of this weekend. Especially if I could get a file I could import into the cutter, that would be SHWEET.

Are you really hesitating on the worth-it-ness of a $240 AK? or less if home built?

:flipoff2:

Unless it's a cash FTF affair...there's always a paper trail. Credit cards leave a trail. At the very worst, the business that sold them, even if you used a money order, will still have a record....and if things have gotten to that point....why worry about a paper trail?

I ordered a couple of kits just so I can figgur out what's going in thur by putting them together. Plus, I'm kind of reluctant to buy gun that cheap (especially of questionable origins). Rather do it myself, even if the cost is about the same.

I enjoy building, so I dont do it to get 'cheap' rifles, and you can't really compare a home built to a Saiga. With a home built, you KNOW your rifle, because you built it, plus you have the pride in knowing is yours, BECAUSE you built it. Dont forget the fact that your going to have a hard time running a $10 surplus mag in a Saiga.

I dont know squat about these CAD files, or the machining involved in what your doing, but if *I* were to do something like this, I would try to do it this way:

Cut the flat to shape, add dimples
Bend flat
Add lower rails
Heat treat the whole mofo
Cut/ laser/ ream FCG, selector, and mag holes last

This would allow you to get your holes in the perfect positions, without any distortion from bending or heating.
