yes i know it is a cheap ass welder and i didnt even pay 1/3 of the store price.

it was working fine, i laid about 6' of weld on various things for the last month, last night it all of a sudden started shoot the wire out:rasta:. i missed with the speed a heat and eventually it slowed back down to where it should be. welll today i got 2" of weld laid nice and clean, pull the trigger and it starts to high speed run again. i messed with it some more and it aint getting it.

the only thing i can think of it the speed switched burned up?

any other thoughts?

Or it's just full of crap. Get some aresol pot cleaner at radioshack, take the cover off and spray the heck out of it.

x2. I could also see it being a control board (if those welders have one?).

My buddy's weldpak 100 has worked flawlessly for over 10 years so unfortunately I don't know a whole lot about the innards of them.

i took it apart today, they do have a circut/control board.

every thing inside is clean and no burn marks.

i ohm'd the switch .5 - 5.0 ohm's consistantly, i did it a few times just to make sure i got good readings. turned it nice and slow. ocasionaly it did read a open line but never stuck on it and never read any differently at either end of the dial.

the feed motor does have a minimal amount iron powder stuck to it.

i lifted the feed clamp so the motor would spin without wasting my wire, it kind of pulsed and ran the same speed reguardless of the dial position. it was also sparking against the wire, is that right? i dont know.

i sprayed it down with contact cleaner and air noozled it out, made sure to get the motor and the board real good, for now its back to normal. i got a hold of the welder i had been using before this and got what i needed done, ill test out later today.

well , i got 2' more of weld out of it and now it seems to be permanently fubard.

i took it to a couple of places[knowing they wanted nothing to do with it] and both said board or switch too.

.

Bad board....not worth fixin. The wire speed pots hardly ever fail unless it took a hit. Buy a new one.

a board is $100 new, + $100 paid still saving money.

what are the "pots"? i want to know what i am looking at.

i am looking to get a better welder from one of the shops i talked to, we'll seen what happens tommorrow.

The wire speed control is not a switch. It is a potentiometer. A variable resistor. And i was just looking at a diagram and the pot should be 5k ohm. Thats 5000 ohms. So if you hooked up an ohm meter it should read between 0 and 5k as you turn it. I fix welders for a livin ;)

Edit: When you measure the pot make sure the connector at the control board is disconnected. Can give you a false reading if it is still connected.

then how much can you get me a new board for?

code # 10965

pn# L9073-4

and yes it was .5-5k ohms, i didnt notice the k till you mentioned it.

It's about $100. Whoever quoted you the price is dead on. Depending on how old it is I would buy a new one. They are about $350 from home depot.
