I am looking at buying a couple of third members for my FJ60. Looking for the 4.11. My question is how can I tell the difference between the fine spline R&P third members and the coarse spline(weaker) thirds??? What was the cutoff date for the coarse splines. I have a possible source tht has a yard full of cruisers, but i want to make sure I get the good ones. Thanks..;)

pull the flange off & count the splines. thats the most accurate way to check them. also if the flanges are round its most likely that they are fine spline. I don''t think a round course spline flange was ever made.

As someone who has a round coarse spline stock flange on his cruiser, be careful....

coarse is 10 spline. simplest way is to yank the nut/washer and count. No need to even remove the flange entirely.

There was a round course spline flange, but only on FJ55's??? I pulled one off my '73 Fj55 front, but I have never seen another. Your hunting is going to be pretty slim with fine spline 4.11 without finding an FJ62 or a later '78(and only '78) FJ40 or FJ55....

Where is this source??? Is it toyota salvage? Or Tim Hill???

Fine spline 4.10 third members are found on '78 FJ40s and FJ62s. Coarse spline 4.10 thirds are much more common and you might consider going with these unless sinion strength is of paramount importance.

Pin Head, help me out here is the third member the same in the 40"s and the 62's? I guess I should know these things since I have one of each. (ok the 40 has 5:29's in it and I know the 62 has 4:10's, so it really won't help me for a quick fix.) I know the FZJ-80's rear 3'rd is the same... dam it's like I need a tide chart or road map. We need a master parts match list! Does such an animal exist?

i think most 80 rears are full float and willl need the spider gears swaped out to use the c clip axles of the older fjs. and i guess you and i are the only ones i know of that have installed the 5.29 gears in a cruiser. i haven't broke the rear ring gear yet. mike

Thirds are identical.

Yes, basically.

There are some minor differences, like the flange bolt patterns and the fact that early ones (before 1968) had smaller bolt holes for the housing studs and coarse axle splines, but the differences are easily overcome so that they can be interchanged over a broad range of years.

I can't imagine the one of these ring gears going! Dag, the sucker has got to be over 2" thick! I had to mill off almost an entire tooth to get the fricken cross pin in! Now popping the little pinion head off... well that is my biggest fear. So you and I are in the same screwed boat if we grenade a rear end! I keep trying to talk myself into building up a back up spooled 3rd.... but come on I can better spend the $300+ in parts on lots of other cool stuff!

Mike, when that time comes hook me up with a deal on that back up 3rd you got. (Hopefully as good of deal as that axel I am shipping out for you early tomorrow!)

Cruiserbrett:

Tim hill is one of the guys, the other is his old partner(from what I was told).

As for the strength issues, were not people concerned with the pinion breaking due to axel wrap? I thought the newer 40 thirds were fine spline. Guess I was wrong. I am putting it in a 60. the I am building, and not sure if i should worry about it. I guess if I control the axle wrap there should be know problem.

-Thanks for the info.

Where did you all get your 5.29's? I'm looking at regearing in the near future. If you do decide to go with the Rockwells, let me know if you want pass on the 5.29's. Definitley interested.
