: Will Rock Crawling some day be like Nascar?
Jeepmangled87 09-10-2001, 08:59 PM I was watching a special on TV on how racing all got started. It seems like this is one day how rock crawling will be much like nascar, since we have the ARCA are we gonna have indoor tracks and famous driver any time soon? And will some of us win big money?I wanna watch Rock crawling on TV every sunday soon!!! Also can we get a rock crawling TV network? After all there is speedvision the race chanel..give this some good input.thanks boys
COMPLAINE 09-10-2001, 09:12 PM I hope it never does, but just like all other forms of automotive competition it will become way too expensive to compete, for us small guys, and the big shots will have way too many incredible rigs to compete against.
In short, proabably.
66CJdean 09-10-2001, 09:14 PM We already have things like the ASS to compete against with axles that are 10k+ each.
COMPLAINE 09-10-2001, 09:23 PM That is exactly what i am talking about Dean. All i could ever do is hope i am a way better driver than them.
elf_cruiser 09-10-2001, 09:26 PM It will definitely be like NASCAR, though possibly not as big. I think this is a positive thing, though. Sponsors will jump in and be eager to pick up anyone who knows about Rock Crawling. Personally, I want to be a crew chief/engineer more than a driver. Keep hope alive fellas, we might all be rich someday...
Big Rich 09-10-2001, 11:31 PM My .02 worth....just as with any type of racing or competion there are many classes that one can run. someday soon, maybe next year even (hehehe) there will be sportsman type classes that anyone can compete in. Or maybe claimer type classes....who know the options are endless...It will just take someone (hehehehe) to come up with a plan....
jeepster1220 09-11-2001, 06:08 AM You're being way too optimistic I think. I can never see a really huge national following for it, because if you're not a wheeler, it is completely stupid and boring to watch people drive trucks on a pile of rocks. I myself would watch it all the time, and in fact last night, I was scanning to see what was going to be on Speedvision, and was cursing that there could be at least 1/2 hour of some/any kind of wheeling show on...
Complaine is right too that it would quickly be overran with mega budget teams and the little guy would be sitting on a rock being a spectator. Look at some of the buggys coming out:
http://www.avalancheengineering.com/buggies/assassin3.jpg
While it's very cool, and probably kicks ass off-road, I have no desire to watch a bunch of look-alike buggys crawling on the rocks, which is what it would come down to. I want to see built Jeeps, Toys, Broncos, etc. battling it out. I cannot stand Nascar because now every car looks exactly the same, whether it be Ford, Chevy, whatever. It completely bores me. I like watching the Nascar footage from the early 70's when you could tell the Chargers from the Torinos from the Chevelles, and the body is exactly the same as when you walk into the dealership to buy one. To call Nascar "Stock" car racing is a complete joke. There is not a single stock part on any of those cars...Just my long winded opinion

I have to agree. Just look at the many forms of competition motorsports that have much better TV appeal than RockCrawling that have NEVER developed any kind of following on TV. Will never get anywhere near that big, though it clearly will get bigger than it is now.

NE-RokToy 09-11-2001, 07:53 AM I think if tractor pulling can get national TV coverage it definatly is not out of the question to see rock crawling on. Not saying it will be like nascar, getting prime airtime, but it will be on. Hell the FWOR ultimate adventure will be on fox sports network and affiliates(sp?) And as far as it getting to big and expensive, there are already other orginazations and classes for the smaller guys

I agree, exposure is good. This would allow more venues and areas to wheel and more $$ into the places we currently wheel.
Yes, but not near as big...ever, well unless they do the artificial courses??!!
I hope and pray iot necer gets like NASCAR.
Sounds odd to say but money ruins everything.
NASCAR was cool when it was a bunch of hillrods building junk in their backyard. Now it is just lame because all the shit is the same.
'crawlin' is cool 'cause it's just a bunch of hillrods building junk in their driveways. As soon as it gets to far past that it gets lame. Any gear heads remember when Real Street racing hit? The class the comon man could run? How long did that last? Same for the NMCA fastest stret car shoot out, fergit NASCAR, we are going the way of the hot-rods.
Screwzer 09-11-2001, 12:04 PM I sure as $hit hope not. There are already way too many idiots with money trying to build rediculous rigs and drive 'em off trail and wreak the forest where I live. As a result, over 400 gates have been put up by folks trying to protect what's left. In the last year alone 3 or 4 trails within just a couple of miles from my house have been closed. And these were the ones "nobody" knew about.
Ten_Bucks 09-13-2001, 11:49 AM This kinda reminds me of what George Carlin once said:
"Guys will do anything if you promise them some appliance of some kind. Something that plugs into a wall and makes a whirring noise. Budweiser would jump at that sh*t in a half a minute."
My point is that it will eventually be like that someday. Just my $.02
windows98 09-13-2001, 02:10 PM i think that it would be great to see it on tv cause i can never see any of it really from where i am i think that theres that problem of money sponsered rigs running and putting others out of buisness but it might really help out in the long run i also think that its way more interesting to see things people build instead of the others like the scorpion and the avalanche because they have parts i almost never will be able to get. it puts it into the realm of possible then
smurfsdad 09-13-2001, 04:51 PM it will come to that sooner than you think cuz the way things are going the only place there will be any wheelin will be in a stadium. so start standing up for what is ours and write those letters and get involved or just relinquish ? yourselves to sittin in a stadium drinkin beer and watching
OOP'S 09-13-2001, 08:10 PM Look how far it has already come! Some thing that started as a "poor mans sport" has gotten way out there already. I love it when I see not so sophisticated rig places well. Then you know that that guy knows his rig and is a hell of a driver.
In the late 50's, early 60's I was very much involved in go-kart racing, the "poor mans sport" of the day. In less then four years all of the poor men were basically ran out of the sport with all of the high tech equipment and look what it is today. A Kart that is anywhere near competitive runs four to ten thousand dollars. I would love to see them make some classes in the Rockcrawling competition.
Toy 4Runner Man 09-13-2001, 09:29 PM Problem is, half of the popularity with Nascar is due to wrecks! When I was younger that was the only reason I watched, but now I respect the increadable work that those cars are. Tractor pull, I don't see that around but about once in a year. I wouldn't mind seeing a limited amount of Rockcrawling on one of the channels that I can actually get!
DHONDAGOD 08-09-2006, 11:32 PM NOTE THIS THREAD WAS STARTED IN 2001
I was browsing in the way-back machine and thougt this was interesting. very insightfull posts way back when.....
chris:cool2:
pirate 08-10-2006, 07:47 AM No
RedBullJeep 08-10-2006, 09:06 AM Funny that the ASS (short for Assassin) only ended up winning a couple events in it's lifetime...even though it's concept was ahead of its time, the technology to make it dominant just wasn't available.
 it's a frankenthread...
BUT. In light of recent Hollywood releases, I'm wondering if Will Farrell will still be the go-to funny guy when "Moab Nights" debuts...
In some ways the two are identical. Lots of mulleteers sitting around drinking Busch and going "WOOOOOOOO!!" on lots of trails I've been on.
LandCroozer 08-10-2006, 09:40 AM Note this thread was started September 10, 2001.
The terrorists haven't won, we still talk about (and do) the exact same things today as we did on sep 10.

forsakenfuture 08-12-2006, 01:47 AM I was reading the thread and then noticed the start date....spooky to think how things changed in just a few hours.

I'll tell you what gets me going is this newer fad in the sport of the actual rock racing (XRRA and others) Definately gets the old Home Improvement grunt going seeing those rigs relying on good ol HP going through those courses...

YamanX 08-12-2006, 09:07 AM I don't think it will be anything like NASCAR. We turn right also, on the same course.
NASCAR has hit the big time since 9/11....it might have to do with the fact they don't fit the politically correct mode. They Support our Troops openly, they Drink Beer, they Pray to GOD before every event, they support the traditional Family Structure, even though it slips out sometimes in a mild form Profanity is Frowned Upon and they Fly ole' Glory with pride.
If this sport were to embrace NASCAR's value structure it might become a household staple someday.
surpip 08-12-2006, 12:27 PM :shaking: ya you must have GOD to rock crawl:rolleyes:

Shutup.
45acp 08-12-2006, 01:57 PM Value structure? You mean we should impregnate family members or snub minorities? Because my cousin is married to a hot black chick and i could kill two birds with one stone...
we still ... [do] the exact same things today as we did on sep 10.

Except carry liquids on planes.
Or pay $1.20 a gallon for gas.
Or a lot of other stuff...
No they haven't "won" but life is different.
We turn right also, on the same course.
We're ambiturners, they're Zoolander.
