: Engine woes
reraub 03-10-2008, 04:12 PM The other day i posted about tearing down a 99 disco with a bosch 4.0 and stated I thought it had a bad head gasket. Has 119,000 miles Has been using coolant Pulled the heads today, there is no indication that coolant has leaked through anywhere it looks pristine. But I have never, EVER seen an engine so full of gunk and carbon. Paul (PT) and somebody else(sorry for skipping the cred whoever it was:homer:) mentioned possible cylinder sleeve issues before teardown given the symptoms. But nothing is out of place on the deck all the sleeves are as they should be. Id hate to put it all back together with a new head gasket and bolts and miss somthing.
Junkyddog11 03-10-2008, 07:10 PM No pistons / combustion chambers looking like they had been steam cleaned?
Sometimes the liner will not appear to be out of place but will still be loose.

While I am not a member of "The sky is falling, my liners are slipping" crowd, it is occasionally the case that the liners don't begin to leak coolant to the combustion chamber until the engine gets hot. It might have been well advised to look for combustion gases in coolant before disassembly.
I personally have only encountered liner problems on Freelanders, or catastrophic failures (pieces missing from the deck, etc.). I have encountered more instances than I can count of failed fire rings leaking combustion gases to the water jacket and eventually, the rest of the head gasket fails and coolant is ejected from the back of the cylinder head/block mating surface.
Used 4.0s are cheap and plentiful enough that if you are concerned, replacement might be a good peace of mind move.
fridgefreezer 03-11-2008, 12:19 PM Check Ian's engine build thread on LR4x4 (http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=14006&st=80) - he slipped a liner but it was completely indetectable both before the build and after being run, didn't protrude from the deck or anything but sure enough got steam-cleaned. Alternative, if you can find a shop to do it, is to get the block re-linered with top-hat liners which should cure it properly.
reraub 03-11-2008, 01:43 PM PT you got a low miles 4.0 bosch??

Not a Bosch, and the GEMS is going into AFI's 109 project.
Call WIll Tillery, he always has engines. Discoweb is full of folks with parts.
reraub 03-11-2008, 04:09 PM Well im gonna roll the dice on this one most it will cost me is a couple evenings and another head gasket set.
RockRover 03-11-2008, 09:40 PM When my 3.9 did the overheating thang I could NOT tell where the gasket had been leaking. BUT when I replaced all was right with the world again.
What's a used 4.6 complete (harness and ecu) going for these days?

I try not to be, and with my comment was assuming that the head gasket had been deemed good...compression good etc.
The thing I see , too often, is rigs coming in the shop that have been "fixed" by others i.e;, head gaskets, that are still spewing coolant, motor full of carmelized oil sludge etc. and 1 or 2 pistons all shiney and clean. The liner slip is real.
Is anyone doing the top hat liners state side....for real, not just "on the web"?

I wasn't referring to you, the slipped liner thing seems to be REALLY popular on Dweb.
Sadly, there are way too many folks out there who refuse to believe that prevailing torque is a suitable way to tighten head bolts.
My machinist is willing to do the tophats, if I can find liners. Supposedly, Mark is offering blocks with tophat liners on an exchange basis. Used presumably good blocks are still available.

This might not be the best forum for discussing a topic like yours. While many of us here will try to help, you may well be better served by the folks (including me) at discoweb.org.
We're gonna have to start at the beginning with your issues.
Cheers,
PT

Yep

If your mere touch is causing lights to turn on, I suggest discharging yourself. Take jumper cables and attach them to the battery on your truck, then attach the red cable to your right ear and the left cable to your left arm.

(I hope he doesn't really do that)

Lucas beds you:homer:
lutzgater 04-25-2008, 03:18 PM PT, you are too nice to thread-hacks and jumpers.
4X4Lover, at first I thought that was a joke-entry. Learn to use a board and don’t hijack a discussion with your own issues.
Now get on with the remedy of jumper cables and your ears.
Nuff said.

Better to be thought nice to folks who may or may not deserve it than be rude to everyone.
Remember what Thumper said! If you ain't got nothin' nice to say, don't say nothin' at all:flipoff2:
I really love these trucks. I don't want somebody else to become disillusioned by the marque too soon. That should require several years of Rover ownership:D

Yeah, well, Thumper didn't drive a Disco.
