: I got an Idea for a race, from Canada to Mexico

Ok, So I grew up in Idaho, and I know you can run from the Canadian border to Nevada on mostly fire road, logging roads and goat trails. Pretty sure you can get to Reno off-road, and from there we can get to Las Vegas and on to Barstow with out much problems, So the next Challenge is from Barstow to the boarder.

Good luck with that, ever hear of the BLM

I can just imagin what the bill for cost recovery would be , then add in dragging of the race course, permits and all the other things that would be involved  :shaking:

The Vegas to Reno Race by BITD probably costs Casey Folks somewhere in the mid 5 digits range to put on, not including course rehabilitation (sp)

anyone wanting to become the promoter for such a race, call me and I'll get you going in the right direction :D

It's about 1500 miles, if you did it unofficaly, would you do check points and let the parteapents plot there own corse? and you would need trucks that could do some one road stuff and bolt cutter or tow strap to open some gates.

I think you'll have to do it Gumball style, doubt you could get any sort of legit permision for a race that crosses state lines, especially that many states, just the logistics of closing the course are insane. Either way I'm in, Roverspeed will own all.

it drives me nuts when people refer to the "cannonball sea to shining sea memorial trophy dash" as the "gumball rally". for fucks sake, just call it cannonball. gumball whatever the fuck it was, was some lame unlicensed movie that was idiotic. eventually Brock Yates (inventor/planner of the cannonball races) sued and got money for royalties against the people who made the gumball movie....when you say gumball, not only is it blasphemous and probably cursing your idea to failure, you sound like uninformed yokels. anyone who is serious about motorsports should read Brock Yates book or at least know enough to call it cannonball and not gumball. just an FYI

Not to start a fight, but the Gumball Rally is a real thing too..... it's completly different however, so I see your concern in people getting them confused. Both of which were far more than movies or books

EDIT: upon further reading one inspired the other..

In 1933, motorcycle racer "Cannonball" Baker crossed the United States from coast-to-coast in approximately 54 hours. In the 1970s, Car and Driver founder and editor Brock Yates started the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash in his honor. The second race was won by Yates and Dan Gurney, a former Formula One and Le Mans driver, driving a Ferrari Daytona. They needed about 36 hours to transit from New York to L.A. These events inspired the 1976 movies The Gumball Rally and Cannonball, as well as sequels including Cannonball Run, Cannonball Run II, etc. The "Cannonball" race eventually was canceled in 1979 due to a combination of media attention and pressure from political influences and police organisations who were concerned about road safety.

Drawing inspiration from the 1970s race, the aforementioned movies, as well as the movies Smokey and the Bandit and Vanishing Point , Maximillion Cooper revived the spirit of the old races in the summer of 1999 by combining the driving element with nightly parties and layovers at luxury hotels. The "Gumball 3000" has since captured public attention through celebrity participation and widespread coverage including CNN, MTV, the BBC, Esquire magazine, FHM magazine, and George Gurley from Vanity Fair, who rode with 2003 "Spirit of the Gumball Trophy" winner Alexander Roy through Morocco during the 2004 Rally.

Both the Cannonball Run and Gumball Rally are still being particpated in. This year the Cannonball Run Europe kicks off in July and word is out that this years Gumball will be in asia.

Cool con cept that if seriously considered, should not be discussed publicly.... and theoretically I'd be interested :smokin: err ah... Hypothetically in an unofficial way that is....

i have read Brock Yates book, so i'm well aware of the history, it explains it in detail. imho the gumball movie is a stupid knockoff. and the gumball race is a knockoff of a knockoff, and a lame publicity stunt, which the cannonball was not.(until later years when it got turned into the one lap of America or whatever) those people who use the name gumball however are paying royalties to Yates.

long story short, you want this race to be a "cannonball"....low key...not a "gumball" which just sounds stupid and is all about publicity.

Just to let everyone know...the trip/route has already been done at least once that I know of....there was a big article on it in "Outside" magazine of all places about 2 years ago...this couple decided to see if it was possible and I think they said that in all the mileage they did (from I believe Montana to Mexico) they were "offroad" over 90% of the time....I guess it took them forever to put together the route from all the different maps but just wanted to throw this out there....

I was thinking if your broke it up in to group say a group get a start and end check point say 300 miles or so and they plot the rout, put on a card with the GPS tracks. so when the drivers hit the check point they get the next part of the course. That way no one person knows the course. If we could turn it into a realty TV show we could get all the money we need.

I like the look of that. Great things often have come from a night of drinking in Hermosa. I have a qualifing vehicle too.

They said the finish was at a scrapyard. Is it a requirement to crush the car?

Not a requirement just a suggestion, one of the racers Heavy Metal Chuck kept his and still drives it. I want to race it this year. Maybe we can get PIG to sponsor a couple of cars? It would be nice to see a few more racers.

Why stop at a border to border?

Lets raise the bet to Patagonia to Alaska.:D

The Adventure article posted was one of my favorites. I always thought that would be a fun race, but the logistics seem a bit of a reach. If someone were to try it I would suggest a stage race, or endero. That would be the best bet for a race like that. Full navigation, and attempt to maintain a set pace. Not that I would ever consider some crazy stunt like racing terrian that is outside the box.:flipoff2:

If some one was to attempt this please keep me in the loop, it would be very interesting to me to watch the progress of such an endevor, from a non participant sort of way.:)
