r77-

I can get them. HDK Japanese aftermarket with or without ABS ring. Stock NTN's are not available for the large birfields as Toyota has not given their grace to such a deal (I can get small NTN's aftermarket).

These are from RickD..I highly suggest you using him.

Anti lock brake (ABS) birfields have a little toothed ring on the spindle side of the birfield (180 degree opposite to photo end).

The machined mass of a ABS and non ABS birfield is the same- no extra meat on either one. Non ABS were in 80 series until 4/1994 and are in all 1990 and later 7X series (except for minor HJ75 run in 1990). The ABS feature is irrelevant in any discussion of this photo as it cannot be seen.

A mini birfield, or a FJ60 birfield, or a late FJ40 birfield (and 70 series 1984-1989) ARE ALL THE SAME SIZE. The other two in the photo are 'standard size' birfields circa 1979-1990.

The center happens to be an early newfield (dating based on removed cage), the right is a 1980 FJ40.

Call around to some junkyards... I buy bent FJ80 core axles for $250 - $300 - all internals are usually good, just a bent housing. I may be picking up a couple Friday, I'll let you know if I have any spare birfs (friends get first dibs).

Actually Nolen messed up. It's a non ABS birfield but all that is different is a ring on the outer (other) side. It's also brand spankin new not a 130,000 mile spinner like some 80 series donors.

...as for a hybrid. 1990+ 75 series knuckle parts TAKE STANDARD mini/60/high steer arms (same bolt pattern and spacing size etc.). In fact, the bottom cap is same size as 1/1979 and later front ends. Spindles are same, takes Aisin hubs (mini etc) all in all cool thing. BUT, no one puts the larger balls on the 9.5" ring gear housing- yet. Imagine a longfield with that meat on it.

also, the newfield is toast, but you may be able to make out the trick mod that Canadian mines do. Using a 'gun drill' (a single flute bit that self centers) they drill a hole right down the middle of the shaft. The free hub (driveplate) end has a grease zirk and therefore with minimal effort the birfield cage can be directly injected with grease! cool idea hunh?

I'll clean things up and show a finished product here fairly soon.

I'm confused then. If the one on the left is non ABS then what is the one on the right? someone re-label these for me so I can get this straight in my head. I would like to see all the differences in Birfield sizes if someone has more pics than these post'em please.

I'm thinkin the one on the left is an 80, the other 2 are mini-40 birfields.

Might want to check that non-ABS birfield date again, Rick, as many early fzj80s have ABS brakes. Including mine :).

from the US fiche:
1/90-8/92 43405-60030 (upgrade to 60050, the non ABS I have in my hand)
8/92-4/94 43405-60050
8/92-4/94 w/*66 (ABS) 43405-60060 (60070)
4/94-1/95 43405-60070 w ABS
4/94-1/95 43405-60080 non ABS
1/95-1/98 43405-60070 w ABS

so inreality there are 94's and 95's w/o ABS as well. I was going off of my aftermarket parts catalog which does the cut at 4/94. Therefore, you might even find ABS birfields earlier than I said, or you might get non ABS later!
