: Sami Auto vs Toy Auto????
rokcrln 07-10-2002, 08:22 PM Ok I have nailed down the motor for my rail project so it is time to pick out an Auto and duel T-case for it. What I want to know is over all lengh for both and rough prices. The set up I want is an Auto tranny and duel cases. The Toy tranny is longer but the duel T-case are ( I hate this word) married and the sami unit would be I think a trany with married T-case and then a (like this one better) divorced T-case.
What are the pros and cons about both? Yes I did a serch and got enough to want to try the auto but not enough for the pick one or the other.
Now for the vehical info. It will be a full on trail rig, Tube frame with waggy front diff and prob a ford front d44 for the rear for 4wheel steer. I will be running atleast 37x12.5x15 in the summer and 38-40's in the snow. Wheel base will be around 102" and four wheel coil overs.
Azrckcrawler 07-11-2002, 06:36 AM If you do a search I posted some numbers on this a while ago. I think if you want a Tracker auto behind a 1.6 w/ Toy cases, you need to get a pair of Toy cases, adapter, gears and a divorce mount kit to do it which adds up. Your starting from scratch so it might not matter to you. I picked up a 6.1 gearset to hold me over till I get my next rig done and decided to try the 1.6/auto/sidekick t-case and divorced Zuk case. Randy Ellis ran this and was happy with it. I'll keep the Sidekick case stock, so it'll only add a 1.8:1 reduction in low, just a little extra oomph if needed. One other bit of advice Randy gave me: if you do run a divorce mounted t-case, put at least a 6" driveshaft between the two cases (with 2 u-joints), it'll save you some headaches.
I never looked into a Toy auto, didn't think there was one available for the 22r?
scwafish 07-11-2002, 07:32 AM There is an auto for the 22r, my buddy has one in his stocker 85 pu, but I dont no about stacking cases etc behind it. I posted all of the info on dual toy tcs in your other post. I would rather have a married setup myself, simpler to locate in the chassis IMHO.

I agree, if you can, stay with a married setup. Much easier to mount.
yager 07-11-2002, 09:16 AM Im at least a year off from a drive line change, but im sure the need for bigger tires will push this issue for me....
Curiously watching and waiting for all the new wiz bang adaptors to get into circulation and see some in person......
---
On the divorced / married setup. I agree that married would be easier.... What options are there for a married set up? (auto or stick)
Just a full toy trans w/ t-case? w/ ring adaptor?
In all honesty this does sound like a more reliable long term setup if starting from scratch.... definitly no breakage worries...
I just see the kick stuff failing over time on a full-on buggy setup with 37+ tires...
..... just pondering some things while stuffing my face at work... -yag
Shrock 07-11-2002, 09:22 AM I dunno the marraige setup is proving to be a PITA for me. I think I'm about 1/2 way through this:

Shrock 07-11-2002, 09:25 AM Sheck out this thread on ORC:
He makes the same thing for the 1.6 you might want to talk to him about this.

Well, my advice works for that scenario too :D

Especially when there fixed, I mean working

The 1600 cc 8V Trackicks use the GM 3L30 transmission. Same transmission as in a chevette more or less. Good solid tranny for its size. This is a NON-ECU tranny.
The 1600 cc 16V Trackicks (and I'll assume the 1800 cc) used the GM 4L30 transmission. Basically the Same as the 3L30 but with an overdrive/4th gear portion and it USES an ECU for torque converter lockup. The ECU is separate from the EFI ECU and has various speed sensors in the instrument cluster (RPM, speed).
The Toyota Auto is an Aisin (A455F?) and Advance Adapters does not make any adapters for it.
My pennies to spend? For a dedicated rock buggy the 3L30 is probably plenty big/capable if you don't care about hwy RPMs. Make up a deep pan for it though. AFAIK there are no aftermarket shift kits for either of these trannies. If you go 1800cc I think you are keeping the 4L30 because they don't swap. I may be wrong on that though.

What is the reasoning for the 6 inch shaft? Do you know how far back this puts the zuke t-case from it's original location? I'm moving towards a kicker myself, but I'm looking for more info.:D
rokcrln 07-11-2002, 04:53 PM Has any one had problems with eather the toy or sami autos on very steep climes? My first EB auot had the car c4 trany and it would act like you poped it in neutral on seep climes. This is one reason I am building a second rig is to be able to get my self in these very bad situations and have fun doing it. If they do have this problem will a deep pan and longer pickup do the trick?
zukstur 07-11-2002, 06:50 PM I've got the chevett (GMt180) auto behind my 1.6/16 v and haven't had any problems on steep's, just added a little more fluid to the pan so it is just over full.I had my buggy where it was starting to go over backwards, and it still wanted to climb. The trany also worked fine when it was laying on the left side, do'nt know about the right side YET.
Shawn_C 07-11-2002, 07:26 PM I had the 2.0L in my Tracker it had the auto tranny and it didn't hold worth a :flipoff2: on hills around town. I didn't have it long enough to test it off road alot. it was a good dune cruiser, lots of power to push 29's. FYI though I had it in the 7 times and I only had it for 5 months. Last straw was the rear main blowing, and some bearings in the tranny going out. My lil sis had the same rig and it had a ton of problems as well.

I think the 6" figure is enough to get 2 u-joints and the flanges in there. You can bolt them together with a spacer or a 1 u-joint shaft, but if they are not dead nuts on your going to have vibes and possibly damage something.

The Chevette tranny bolts up with no adapter?

You need the bell housing and torq converter from a automatic two wheel drive kick/tracker and they bolt right up to the t 180 and the 1.6
