I currently have a 86 4runner. I tossed the top and have rigged it for surf fishing and quail hunting. It has alot of removable racks, is very functional, butt ugly, and difficult for passengers to climb in and out of.

What I want is a 4 door of some sort. It is for deep sand, muddy sendero, and beer gettin’ (road legal). I want tires no bigger than 33 (prefer 31). A mild two inch lift would be acceptable. I will be cutting the top off and replacing with.... I probably will be leaving the doors in place. I do not mind dealing with unibody issues if the drive train I start with is worth the additional headache. Which brings me to the million dollar question?

From engine to axles which manufacture made the best all around 4x4 platform and in which year. I appreciate your opinions but please explain why you have come to your conclusion.

I have seen some cool cherokees with chopped tops and jeep has alot of aftermarket support. Toyota land cruisers had diff locks for a few years but are pricey. I don't know anything about the rest.

Thank you for you opinions.

i think if your going for the cheapest way, a Cherokee or Grand Cherokee would be great. If you want to chop the top, then find a cheaper XJ. If money is not an issue and you want a really nice 4x4 that you can fit 33s no prob with very little lift, than take a look at a used JK. I am pretty sure most JKs come with a rear D44.

Toyota 4runner would be pretty sweet sweet set-up since there are tons of aftermarket parts available. BUT...they are really tall, and the engine power might not be up to what you want.
I think it depends on how much of a daily driver you want it to be compared to a trail worthy vehicle.

I would suggest searching around in the classifieds. I have seen some pretty awesome Cherokees very well set-up for pretty damn cheap.

good luck hope I helped out a little

Remember about it being a bad idea to cut the roof off a uni body with out making a roll cage to support everything....

Sounds like the IFS isnt a problem for you so how about a 90 and up 4 door 4runner?

Or make some running board/ sliders for your 86 4runner to make it easier to get in the back seat??

91 or newer XJ 5 speed or auto would fit the bill great. I would take the kids to the dunes with mine as often as I could. 6 cyl has great power,4 doors,2" lift w/31x12.50 mts bfg on 10" wheels and your set for tons of low buck fun in the sand.
