: Solid axle Explorers?
The Adam Blaster 07-10-2002, 10:39 PM Hey,
I was talking with a friend this weekend, and mentioned that the Explorers at one time came with a solid front axle. The only reason i know this is because i've seen them in person, but have no other info to tell my buddy.
Does anyone know what years this was offered/built??
The 'Explorer' name is old(25 years or more in the Fullsize F-series) but the '90(?) SUV:barf: form of the Explorer never came with a solid front axle. TTB dana 35 only.
Eric
Rogue Bronco 07-10-2002, 10:57 PM they had F-150 Custom / F-150 Ranger / F-150 Explorer, ect.
I believe the 'Explorer' tag was an options package, Whereas the 'Explorer' model is an S.U.V.
as Alpo mentioned.
rpenner54 07-11-2002, 09:32 AM The Explorer never came stock with a solid front end, however a number of people are trying to correct that problem. Eventually mine will also be corrected.
welndmn 07-11-2002, 10:45 AM The model of my bronco is called the "explorer" its the only name badge left on it , a ton of people thought it was an old exlporer.....................dumbass's
The Adam Blaster 07-11-2002, 01:19 PM What the hell??
I was at my bro's place this week, and there was a solid axle explorer parked down the street. I even bent down to make sure it was a solid axle......
It looked just like a normal early 90's explorer, pretty common....
I guess i'll have to take pics for you guys... :flipoff2:
rpenner54 07-11-2002, 01:47 PM Someone swapped it in then! Or you mistook the TTB to be a solid axle. Give us Details on the Explorer, someone here might know who's it is.
The Adam Blaster 07-11-2002, 04:10 PM I don't think so, there's no one on the board from Toronto, Canada that i know of.....
But, this hasn't been the first time i've seen one of these.
Nobody 07-11-2002, 04:22 PM When I was in Okinawa, the newer toyota pickups there were solid axle, so I imagine it's possible for exported exploders, but I highly doubt it.
Definately get pics....more than likely swapped in. BTW Tiessen recently had his solid axle exploder stolen from BC, so make sure it's not his!

In that case I'm with Ryan, TTB can look like a solid axle to the unsuspecting eye.....
TTB essentially is a solid axle, but cut in half at the middle and anchored w/pivots at the inside ends of each half. Coils, radius arms, shocks and even the diff will all look much like an sa.

Sorry about the links, still learning to post pics:(
The Adam Blaster 07-11-2002, 04:59 PM Well, next time i see one of these, i'll take a closer look.
I admit i didn't really "examine" it too closely, but it did look like a SA....

ONETUFF76 07-12-2002, 12:49 PM Umm actually I believe they did make the explorer SUV with a solid axle for the first 2 or 3 yrs. Then it when to TTB, then to the IFS.
strong_like_tractor 07-12-2002, 01:02 PM Hate to burst your bubble but Exploders never came with a straight axle. Before they were called Explorers it was the Bronco II. Unless you are talking about a 78-79 Bronco with the Explorer option.
JP
Paul Gagnon 07-12-2002, 03:05 PM At a glance to the untrained eye the TTB can be mistaken for a solid axle.
The Adam Blaster 07-12-2002, 03:12 PM Anyone willing to post a pic of this TTB setup so i can see what IT looks like?

The Adam Blaster 07-13-2002, 09:56 AM Thanks for posting that Zukster, and ya, that looks like what i have seen on the Explorers i "thought" were solid axles, just not with that much detail. I wonder if anyone will get pissed if i crawl under their Ford to take a closer look at that setup.... :D :D :D

First off, thanks for the numbers Brian.. National wanted 600  :smokin: Called Valley Spring and got them for 200 less. They are variable rate coils.. The guy (Bill) took down a bunch of information like, engine size, winch, tire size, pressure on road, pressure off road plus a bunch of other things.. They were busy so i was told they would be ready in 3-5 weeks.. Took them about 7 weeks to ship them out. They should get to my house today or tomorrow..
Ive been meaning to ask you but keep forgetting... When you moved your axle forward did it f@#! anything up with your steering.?

Nope... no problems. I didn't move it forward all that much tho. Less than an inch.
Bronkzilla 07-17-2002, 09:33 PM Thats all i need... Thanks. :grinpimp:
mjs408 07-17-2002, 10:10 PM on the black SA exploder, why does one spring sit under the frame while the other bolts into a spring bucket on the side? why did you decide on this set up?
bigredford04 07-17-2002, 10:15 PM bsoder, that thing is sexy!

That's what my wife says. ;)
welndmn 07-18-2002, 10:21 AM I would guess it does because the explorer frame is a little wider.
I would of just bowed my coils out word i mean all ford have some bow in them

You are imagining things. It's an optical illusion or maybe you need to put your glasses on... LOL :p
Nobody 07-18-2002, 02:09 PM man you guys gotta quit messin with my head :rasta: :rasta:
Thanks for clearing that up Paul....of course it still looks weird:confused:
mjs408 07-18-2002, 02:50 PM ahhh, now i see, and the weird thing is, it wouldnt have looked that way from any other camera angle, just a thought, how many other people thought it was under the frame rail?
bsoder 07-18-2002, 03:10 PM *ahem* *whistles*
Demon4x4 07-18-2002, 03:58 PM Let me see if I can clear this up for you

I admit.... the newbie had me going for a minute:rasta:
yeah you're right, everthing else is really nice... couldn't imagine some one doing something that stupid
welndmn 07-19-2002, 10:06 AM From some of the "stuff" i have seen i totaly belive someone would do that.
But you fooled us all :P
You got some more pics of the Trac bar frame bracket, Looks kind of cool
Demon4x4 07-19-2002, 04:24 PM This is the only other one that I have right now. But I could probably get some more if you want. It was made from a James Duff track bar drop bracket, and along with some more steel, was welded to the frame and to the coil bucket. It also has a mount for my central brakeline. I was thinking about bracing it againt the other side of the frame, what do you think?
http://demon4x4.com/Mudd/Swap/052203.JPG
Nobody 07-19-2002, 05:32 PM Definately run a brace from the track bar bracket back to the engine crossmember. It's easy to do, and it will provide the majority of support.
