: 283 Factory EFI options?

Hey Chevy guys,

I am a Land Rover geek, but have stepped way beyond the traditional owner, as we are putting chevy small-blocks in our trucks.

The first truck I did the V8 conversion to is a '53 80-inch wheelbase Land Rover. We put a 283 in that one. The second truck we're finishing right now is a 145 inch wheelbase crew-cab Land Rover. It's got a 350. Here's a thread showing pics of it:

The '53 80-inch got the Holley Commander 950 TBI system installed onto it and has been nothing but problems. BIG problems.:mad3:

TWO ECU's have gone bad and I am just about to rip it off and throw on a Q-jet. That's what we're putting in the crew-cab.

Before I'm forced to re-do the fuel lines, filters, pump, etc...and put on a Q-jet onto the '53, I thought I'd ask about putting on a factory EFI setup.

So, not being a Chevy guy (except for the motors and stuff), here's where I need advice from those who know.

Is there going to be a 'best choice' for factory EFI onto this thing? Can the EFI for a 350 work on a 283?

Is there a better aftermarket EFI system than Holley??? (there HAS to be...)

Any other suggestions?????

Thanks tons guys!

:flipoff2:

Michael

Standard GM TBI should work ok, shouldn't have to change intake, etc. It will also use the same type sensors as the Holley. Check w/ turbo city and howell fuel-injection systems for the computer and chips. You could run TPI, there's one in the forsale section. TBI would be the easiest, though.

I second the TBI reccomendation, as far as factory EFI setups go, they're pretty simple and easy to work on. Plus they can be had cheaply used. If you want to buy a kit, Howell sells kits that use a custom harness and chip w/GM TBI components.

Also, it is possible to run a carb off the FI pump and lines. My brother took his old ProJection system off due to relibility problems, and ran a carb for ~1 year using the in tank pump and return line that we put on his '70 Blazer. He has since converted it to TBI using junkyard components and it runs way better now.

One thing you may want to think about if you get a complete injection kit of a stock truck is the the 283 obviously has less displacement than a 350. You may want to get an EFI setup off of a 305 or evena 4.3 vehicle so that the injectors and computer are better matched for the displacement of the engine.

The 350 setup may have a hard time running lean enough at idle.

if you dont like the ECM then just change that to an Accel DFI or Electromotive TECII
leave the hard parts where they are, manifold, throttle body etc
you could most likely just run a factory ECM from a TPI car with some work as most aftermarket stuff uses GM sensors and wiring

Wow, so many options.

I knew I'd probably be overwhelmed with suggestions.

I had a pleasant conversation with Holley Tech today. Surprized me actually that THEY called ME when my ECU arrived.

Apparently it had 2 bad drivers.

DuH!!!!

So...they are sending me a NEW ECU with the upgraded program that has more tuning parameters and can supposedly even adjust timing. We'll see how well she runs with the new spiffy ECU.

If another one conks out on me I may be heading for Howell. I met some RCAA guys this weekend who swear by it.

Thanks again!

Michael
