can a '89 trooper w/5speed, 4x4, manual hubs be flat towed for any appreciable distance? the transfer case doesn't have a neutral that's why I ask. Thanks, Tom.

Shouldn't be any issue flat towing the 5-speed. Autos are the ones that will supposedly burn up if flat towed too far. And FWIW, the t-case doesn't have an official neutral; but if you have the selector between 4Hi and 4Lo there is a dead spot in there where neither gearset is engaged.

I pull the rear driveshaft when I flat tow with the MUA5 tranny. I had heard that the transfer case doesn't oil itself well when flat towing. Better safe than burned up.

This trip was about 800 miles each way.

thanks for the responses. I had been pulling the rear dline, but what a PITA, especially when making multi stops to explore on a long trip. It seems like there would be an easier way.

Lttlbddy, good lookin Amigo.

I'm with Steve... take the five minutes to pull the driveline. I keep an open-end wrenche, a gear-wrench, and a strap in a zippered nylon bag -- all under the driver's seat. It takes very little time to slide under, pull the 4 pinion flange bolts, and strap the driveshaft to the tub, and I don't lose the driveshaft hardware since it goes right back in the nylon bag and right back under the driver's seat.

Without a true neutral in the transfer case, this is IMHO necessary insurance.

has anybody thought about lock-out hubs on the rear? I used to see 'em all the time on cj's.
