: Is 1/4" plate enough for a front crossmember winch mount.

I'm cutting the current front cross menber off my CJ-7 frame.
I have a huge piece of 1/4" plate laying around. It looks good enough for a cross member.
Is it going to be strong enough for a winch mount?
How thick is the steel on warns winch plates?

1/4 is thick enough but I have been using 1/2"

True, but some of Warns product look like they could be better. I would use something thicker. But thats just me. I like to Over Build everything.

You might want to brace it. Have a look and some warn mounts. They are usually braced pretty good.

Thanks Steve,

I will probably drive down the street to Marks house.
He lives about an hour and a half closer than you do:D

Hmmm maybe you should move out this direction.
Housing is less expensive. Lots of horse ranches too.
and you will live closer to all us cool people in the east bay:D

I know I'm a little late on this one, but I used 3/8" plate, a little better than 1/4 and not as heavy as 1/2. More than enough to support the front of my binder, field tested it myself :D

Thanks every one for your input.
I have many ideas for this now I think I might double up a portion of the cross member so the Winch is mounted on 1/2" .

Why? double the weight? Let me put it this way, the winch plate (for all those that believe in overkill) is already twice the thickness of your frame at 1/4". for a crossmember go for tube.
