: Outboard front springs? Shackle reversal questions
GloNDark 07-11-2002, 08:48 AM OK, I know how I am gonna outboard the front of the front springs (Shackle reversal), how are you guys mounting the rear of the springs?? Shackle side? Are you still running thru the frame witha spacer between the shackle and spring to outboard the spring? Such as OrangeFJ45??
Pics??
Jason M 07-11-2002, 09:59 AM There is something about that design that I just do not really like. It looks like you could easily get it hung up.
However I am a lame ass and still have not figured out a better way to do it. So I guess I should not complain ;)
I still have not decided if I am going to outboard my springs with the FJ60 front I am getting..
GloNDark 07-11-2002, 10:05 AM I agree jason, I just don't know about that design. I have seen it on here a few times, and in the toy truck section, but I never really heard how it works. Seems like the best way to have the front of the springs flush mounted on the frame (Instead of a huge drop bracket like I see on a lot of jeeps)
I guess I can run that design and see what i think of it. If I don't like it I can always change it. I jsut ahte having even more crap under the cruiser to get hung up on. :D:D
The Jerk 07-11-2002, 11:05 AM i like mine a lot better!
lowrider 07-11-2002, 11:28 AM Talk to simon at Fault Line Fab. 909-920-4047. He just finished out boarding the springs on a 45 wagon using FJ60 springs. His set up turned out very clean.

Simon's is the one that Glo posted..
Cruzilla 07-11-2002, 03:06 PM When I put my FJ60 front end in(with SR) I did the shackles like the one in the first picture, except bolth the plates are bent like the outer one. works great, I also don't have a brace in the middle. I used Old Man Emu springs during this conversion with new 18mm bushings and new outboard front hangers 1" either side, with the new stuff it has no side to side movement (yet) so untill it starts creeping sideways I wont brace the shackle.

texican 07-11-2002, 03:24 PM Why even mess with the rears? The reason you have to do it on the front is to clear the pumpkin because the frame is narrower in the front, you can move the spring pads on the axle to line up with the factory locations .....
Just asking....
:p :rasta:

Cruzilla 07-11-2002, 03:31 PM The rear axle is next ( it's sitting in my garage calling my name as I type!) all I have to do is relocate the spring pads and figure out how to refit my rear disk brake brackets to the FJ60 housing flanges, its got a differant pattern for the bolts.
Does anybody have the pattern for this?

Who's outboarding the rears?? I am inboarding mine 2 inches during this conversion. that with FJ55 springs should net me some killer articulation
Jason M 07-11-2002, 03:34 PM How bout running some johnny joints on the rear shackle hangers too.......
:D

I got em!!
Like Chris Giegers toy truck. Very very very very very cool......I am thinking of running them front and rear. HHMMM That would be very trick.
Damn I am already jones for the cruiser to be back. To bad it's 108 in garage right now. DAMN!:D

OK the heat has baked my brain,, I thought on your original post you were asking about the rears....you were asking about the rear of the front springs.........
Butch
Jason M 07-11-2002, 03:44 PM Yeah baby,
Mine are going to be welded to the rear bumper.
Still do not know what to do about the front axle tho.
I am really leaning towards the notching the pumpkin thing.
ALthough I have not seen any really good pics of it!!!

Senile old man..
wngrog 07-11-2002, 03:58 PM Glo, my thoughts....(and you thought I would not chime in :flipoff2: ?)
Outboarding springs....
On a rig like the FJ-45 pictured, I think it is an AWESOME idea. This rig (hopefully) will never see the types of trails yours, Mace's and my rigs see.
The outboarded springs will increase stability and will limit body roll and help with handling both on and off road.
Limits are the rear shackle setup for hardcore wheeling (strength) and the fact that the farther out you put your springs on the axle, the less articulation.
Johnny Joints....
These are just supercharged Heim joints. They are just one more thing that will wear out and cause slop in your suspension.
Sure, if I worked for All Pro, or I had an ARCA rig that got rebuilt every 3 days of use, the Johnny Joints and Heims are great, but I feel that you should build a rig that can go, go, go without having to be rebuilt after every hard weekend.
Just my 2 pennies on the subject
:D :D

They are cheap and fairly durable compared to Heim joints. And my next traction bar will be completely made out of them. :D
Your point on the wear factor is a reasonable one. But I figure why the hell not give it a try. If it does not work it will be supereasy for me to pull them and install the stock spring hangers. Heck, I could even do it on the trail.
Do you think that they would see that much more abuse on the end of a leaf spring than they do on a suspension link?
I really don't know
:)
BJ On Roids 07-11-2002, 04:18 PM in the next two months ill have the front out and new stuff going in...........sooooo
ill try and remember to take some good clear close up shots for you guys
rockmutt 07-11-2002, 08:19 PM dude.....that looks preaty week in the knees:rolleyes:
how long do you think that will last? it will get the job done, but if you took the time to make them, take a little bot more and them :nuke: proof, not tryin to be an A-Hole, but, it looks preaty dang clean:)
orangefj45 07-11-2002, 08:29 PM that kind of critizism from a j**P :rainbow: is pretty much un-called for, unless you had a constructive way to deal with the problem at hand you ought to just pipe down. like the beginning of the post states: this is the first idea for the rear hanger and he might have to change or modify the design. let's see some of you're handywork, tough guy!
nolen: this rig will be going to rubicon on a fairly frequent basis, but not to any rock crawling events. it is being designed and built to be able to drive the 5 or 6 housr to the trail , go all the way through to tahoe, and then back home.
lowrider: you're such a dipstick! that is sully's rig and it is the one simon is building!:flipoff2: you ought to know, or has all that smell of low tide and cowcrap clouded your city slicker brain?!:rasta: :D:
GloNDark 07-11-2002, 08:54 PM I have no problems running jonny joints in my suspension. Yeah sure they wear out the same as heim joints. But the can be rebuilt. And rebuilt pretty easy. And for me?? The cost of the rebuild, although more than just a regular spring bushing, is worth the extra cost for me.
I am really looking for 1/4 elip type flex, with out the cost and out right engineering it takes to drop it in there. So I will settle for less flex (Still waaaaaaaaaaaaay more than what I got now) for less $$$
:D:D:D
I agree nolan, my rig will not be rebuilt after every hard trip, which is one reason why I am choosing to run the jonny joints, my bro has atleast 12 trips on his custom coil spring j##p and the original jonny joints we dropped in there are still in tip top shape. :D

i never notched the pumpkin, that is the thing, i had to lift my perches 15mm from the top of the housing....and this allowed the hanger to be far enough across, cause of the way it slopes, but if you want to get it down another half inch then notching it is cool.......but ARGHHH
you got my clear pics didnt you? the huge one like 300kb? cause that should show it very clearly!
