Cage is almost ready, only have to do some gusseting.
I'm going to use tube for gusseting, I've attached some pics of how i would gusset. How does this look, and what would you do differently??

rear: bar in the main hoop will be just below shoulder heigth, because the seatbelts will attach to it.

Christof, you have done an incredible job on your cage! Looks great!

I think tin bender has recently sorta proved (or at leased convinced me) that the X bars on the main hoop (right behind your head) should go to the frame. I was originally thinking about a V off a bar like you got but have changed my mind.

Other ones look good though:D

Yeah but how would you fix that?? I am running into this same problem with my cage design.

Maybe a bar such as the green line instead of the red one?? Would that be enough?

and of course a spreader bar in there.

Problem is that this is my daily driver, and a spreader bar next to the seat will cause troubles to get into my truck.
But I'll surely put something inthere, don't know what, but I'll fab something up to brace the cage, the seats will also be mounted to the cage.

Was thinking about this too, but I live in Belgium, and it rains a LOT over here, so how can i make it "waterproof" when the X goes to the frame?

Christof,
Al you ahve to do is build another x member that will go between the frame rails and have tabs for the x to bolt to. It is a lot easier if you do not have the rear heater. I was going to do it but ran out of energy ;)
And added a propane tank where it would go..

If this is your DD, what powers it? An invisible motor? :D

A brace like they've drawn probably wouldn't interfere with getting in/out.. keep it low, so the seat is higher than the bar and just lift your leg a bit higher when you swing 'em in/out.

I set up the pass side of my race rig like this.. sit butt on bar, slide into seat.. then slide across to the driver's seat, where the door bar between elbow-and-shoulder height, and horizontal..

Dumb question, but what are tabs??? :rasta: any ideas on how i could waterproof it??

For the side bar that conects the middle hoop and the front hoop do something like mine. Doesn't inerfer with getting in or out, mounts the seats to the cage, and is still a strong brace.
In the future I will probably sell my current cage and build a full cage kind of like Nolens or the one posted here and have the straight diagnal cross bar from middle to front hoop and might move the gas tank to the back so I can lower the seats a bit more...I'm just to dang tall...

Just some sort of plate mount. What you would end up doing is sandwiching the body floor between two parts of the cage.

I'll try to find pics of what I mean..

All you would be doing was drilling a couple of holes in the bed of the tub.

No need for pictures, now i understand what you are talking about, problme is that in my 1980 Bj40 the gastank is sitting unde the bed at that place, so the X will be hard to tie into the frame.

Problem here is that i don't have a bender anymore, so i can't bend a tube like that, I'll se what i can do with square tubing, but my guess is that it will look fugly :barf:
But then again, better a fugly safe cage, than a good looking cage

I forgot the age...

Sorry man.. Tying it into the frame would be a PITA for you and I doubt that it would make all that much difference.

christoff the cage looks great!!!
in the rear shot all you have to do is take the diagonal bracing to the opposite side floor mount of the main hoop. make it an X , it doesnt need to have a dedicated frame mount, the ones for the hoops will be more than adequate, especially if they tie into the frame under the body. also if you can keep the horizontal tube in there also, it makes for a great shoulder harness mount if you plan to use them.

Mine has the forward brace like you are considering...

The horizontal tube will surely stay caus I'm planning to run shoulder harness for seat belts. But I think the X behind the seats and the horizontal bar behind the seat will be a bit overkill :D

Most of my fabrication ideas were found on this site:

Welded in nerf bars: stole the idea from Fixxxxer66

Double main hoop for my cage: stole the idea from you

Back section of the cage: stole a lot of ideas from Jason m

Front legs of the cage: stole it from Woody and Jason m

The list goes on and on, so thanks to all you guys for ideas, tips,...

Edit: Everyone keeps telling me that a forward brace is useless, the brace should be opposite, top of the main hoop to bottom of of rear leg. Why did you put the brace in like that??

Anyone have pics of cages, better designed to withstand forward rollovers?? I don't see how the cage can be made stronger for this.

And an explanation why the cage would be stronger, I'm not talking about rock buggies, but I am talking about Fj40's.

Bracing the double hoop does not make sence....bracinf the rear single hoop does.

I don't know why this would not help in a forward roll?

sure its overkill, especially if your not able to tie into the frame. what you have now is waaaay more than jeeps and factory FJ40 roll bars, and in light slow rolls most of those hold up pretty well.
i was thinking some, if you cant go to the frame, you should still sandwhich the floor between two peices of steel, the one will help keep it from pushing through the floor the other will help with pulling. just a thought

I can't put the seats higher than the bar you suggested, since i am 1.90mtrs tall and then my head would be dangerously close to the cage.

Time for plan B, since i had to return the rented bender i couldn't bend a tube to mount the seat's to the cage(since it was a pipe bender, I couldn't bend a difficult design like this), instead i used 40mm-60mm-4mm square tube and a lot of imagination, I've attached some pics of how it looks, I hate how it looks, but it still is in a an unfinished status, tomorrow I'll clean everything up, gusset the inside corners, and try to round the outside corners, that will probably make it look a bit better.
