: Help me decide on what gun to buy
bobbo27 03-16-2008, 10:21 PM So I've got some money burning a hole, and might as well buy a gun since they probably won't ban 4x4 parts after the election. Looking to spend maybe $500, more or less.
I have:
.243 Rem 700, deer rifle
.22 semiauto something, tube fed so its not a 10/22
12ga Nova
9mm P99
So I want:
.45 1911
AK, mosin, sks, probably buy one of these anyway
Varmint rifle, not sure what caliber I want though - .17, .223, .22-250, 25-06, something else? Probably mostly for coyotes, pdogs, etc
An AR would be fun but I don't think I can afford it.
And anything else that sounds fun...
Help me decide?

Firstly, that's the wrong attitude to have concerning firearms. Let's make sure that doesn't happen. :p
$500 might get you a used mid/high grade 1911 (depending on condition/seller/etc) or a new base model. Didn't someone have a Kimber on here for cheap?:flipoff2:
Or you could get you a new WASR AK and have some left over for 500rds of ammo. You could get 3 Mosins in a variety of models and a BOATLOAD of ammo for them....or an SKS and have plenty left over for 1000rds of ammo and charge to spend on saving up for another gun.
Varmint rifle....hmm.....are you an avid varminter or just wanting to get rid of pesky predators? I'd stay away from the .17. I prefer .22-250 for such game. Savage makes a good entry level varminter, the Model 12 with a hvy bbl, plastic stock and their accutrigger. I would think it's under $500, but you'll need a scope too. Then again, you could always get a .22-250 single shot and use the rest of the money for some Mosin boomsticks.
Of course, none of that includes tax/transfer fees.
Talk to Pete aka Aloharover and see what he can do for you.
braxton357 03-16-2008, 11:46 PM Hell, the .243 is a good "varmint" rifle. I would spend some money making it a better shooter. The 700 is the AR of the "precision rifle" world. Otherwise, an AK can be had cheaply compared to the 1911 or AR.
Rat~Man 03-17-2008, 05:03 AM PT1911 for the 1911. Great buy.
AK's are still cheap. If Pete doesn't have what you are looking for these guys have a nice inventory. http://www.classicarms.us/index.html
SKS's are also cheap. I like the Chinese model 26 myself.
Nagants are cheap too.
However, you wont fill that order for 500 bucks.
aloharover 03-17-2008, 07:23 AM Brand new PT1911 for $510 shipped to your FFL.
Check CMMGs bargin bin ARs for a great deal on a barely used M4orgery.
Savage Bolt gun in 22-250
bobbo27 03-17-2008, 05:51 PM So I’ve realized it kinda sounds like I want to get a tattoo and want you guys to pick one out for me… Not quite what I was going for when I typed that up before I went to sleep last night. So I’ll try to clarify.
I know I can’t get everything I want right away, so I’m trying to decide what to get first. It’s pretty likely that if I get a 1911 or AR I’ll get a cheap one and upgrade parts when I feel like it.
If it’s a varmint rifle, I don’t know what caliber to get and along with that note, not sure how much I’ll need to spend. I’ve shot a .17, .223, and I think that’s it in that range… So I’m looking for advice. It will probably mostly be used for pdogs, ~300yds, with a couple other guys out there with me. So it would be nice to have something a little quieter with low recoil to figure out what I hit. I almost bought a .204 savage with a scope for $500 yesterday, but I haven’t heard enough about them yet.
And the .243 would probably work alright, but it needs to keep being my semi-lightweight deer rifle too. What can I do to that to make it a little better without adding too much weight?
I can probably grab an AK at the local shop for a decent price, but maybe not since they want like $190 for a Mosin or SKS. I’ll have to see what they have tomorrow.
Pete that’s a damn good deal on the PT1911… They want 650 for one here. And $570 for an AR is pretty good – you guys think that 20” would be a good varmint rifle too?
suepahfly 03-17-2008, 07:41 PM IMO, $190 isn't bad for a SKS, although it is way too much for a Mosin.

For sure, they have Mosins here for $89

A 20" AR with a good barrel and match ammo is going to shoot sub 1 MOA
The bargin bins are a great way to get started. If it's not accurate enough for you its straight forward to rebarrel, or just get a different upper.
sscol96 03-18-2008, 01:12 PM Gotta agree with Aloharover. Get a 20" AR, float the barrel, and a good scope.
bobbo27 03-18-2008, 02:15 PM Went to the gun shop over lunch today... The one SKS they have is pretty beat up, and it's been there a while. They have some nice looking Mosins, m38, m44, 91-30. But yeah, still about 2x what I would want to pay.
Pete is your price any better for those bargain bin ARs?
Grimjaw 03-18-2008, 05:28 PM I got an email from CenterFire Systems for a $599 AR15 sporter. I am not sure if it a good deal, I really haven't looked at it. Here is a link......LINK! (http://www.centerfiresystems.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1690)
bobbo27 03-20-2008, 11:13 AM That doesn't look like a bad deal either, since it sounds like the same gun plus two mags.
Also had a guy tell me he's selling his .204 with 2 boxes of ammo for $100, I think it was a New England? Gonna call him today and look at it, but do you guys have any info on New England firearms?

CMMG does not do dealer discounts on the BB rifles.
From all accounts just call them and get that if you are looking for an inexpensive AR.
bobbo27 03-20-2008, 09:03 PM So I ended up buying that .204, hope it doesnt suck :grinpimp:
And I think one of those BB AR's is next on the list.
