: Not so budget 89 toyota build
65Chevy4x4 03-16-2008, 11:27 PM OK so after spending tons and tons of hours building up my last Toyota as your guys might have seen on here, and then turning around and selling it, I'm starting over, AGAIN. I learned a lot over the last year or 2 of building different vehicles so this time I'm gonna do a few things differently. here's some pics for this weeks progress. I'm looking to pick up as many sponsers as possible as I plan to race the entire 1450-org series and selected MORE, MDR, SNORE, and possibly a BITD race. Started on it last Saturday, march 8th. Here's a few pics and some specs.
1400 v8 single cab 89 toyota pickup
Chassis:
89 toyota frame backhalfed and chopped 4" off the front.
89 single cab pushed back 5" on the frame with fabricated firewall.
8 over arms, full 4130 spindle vert uniball up top.
Cycles 20.5" with camber as -2 bump, -4 droop, and 10 deg of caster throughout the travel
3.0x14" SAW 5 tube bypass and 2.5x12" coilover.
Rear
3 link, backhalfed, sway bar, 32 gal cell
2.5x 14" coilover, 3.0x16" bypass
26" of travel
Motor:
Built 355 chevy small block , gear drive, forged Aluminum pistons, port matched heads and intake, hand blended 1.94 intake 1.50 exhaust valves.
Should be around 375hp
Built Th400 reverse manual valve body, heavy duty input sprag, clutches etc.. fixed yoke.
Looking to have done around October, but we all know how that goes.
here's few pics of the progress so far and will update the pics almost daily as I work on it 3-4 hours every night after work and all day sat and sunday.

65Chevy4x4 03-18-2008, 11:44 PM started mocking up the front end to see how everything is gonna fit. I gotta notch the frame about 1/2" to clear everything easily.
2.5x12" coilover and 3.0x14" 5 tube bypass.

I know i was told that soo many times, chevy in a toyota, it won't work, 2.5 coil and 3.0 bypass inline won't work. I guess I'll just have to prove them all wrong.:D
65Chevy4x4 03-23-2008, 10:04 PM got the lower arms almost done this weekend, just need to weld up the top plate and some gussets on some bends and around the uniballs. Should have the uppers done and everything mounted up by the end of next weekend.

toyin 03-26-2008, 07:42 PM Nice work on the arm it's going to come out pretty sweet. My buddy is getting ready to do a Nissan so i have him looking through this thread and the other one you did so he can get some ideas.
JESSE_at_TLT 03-27-2008, 08:19 PM Looking forward to seeing this one come together. What are you using for spindles up front?
65Chevy4x4 03-27-2008, 11:05 PM the spindles are all 4120 with some custom machined lower clevis and snout all 1 piece, and 3.16" 4130 upright, all TIG welded. here's a couple pics of them.

and here's another pic of the motor.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b199/85yota/heims004.jpg
JESSE_at_TLT 03-28-2008, 12:00 AM Those spindles are PIMP. What hubs are you running with them?
65Chevy4x4 03-28-2008, 10:36 AM they use the IFS toyota hubs, rotors, and i'm making the mounts for the ifs calipers on them, there strong and cheap
hatcherpass badass 03-28-2008, 11:24 PM Looking good man, Where did you get the spindles from? I am still trying to decide if I wanna use i-beams or build a-arms on my 92 yota. Thanks
65Chevy4x4 03-28-2008, 11:58 PM ibought them all built from a guy in LA but Blitzkreig sells backing plates for D44 spindles and then you can fab up the rest like I did or get some already done from them, ut be ready to drop some cash if they build them. I'd just run the IFS 4x4 spindles like my last build, worked great and got plenty of travel, just wanted to try something different this time.
JESSE_at_TLT 03-29-2008, 12:41 AM I think the Toyota 4WD spindles and hubs are a great way to go, but why not run the sraight-axle hubs so you can run longer arms or keep the track width a little narrower?
maxyedor 03-29-2008, 01:24 AM So what's the plan with this one? Build it and sell it so you can build another newer and more expensive truck and just keep doing that untill you have a TT?
I really dug the first build, but this one's allready looking faster.
65Chevy4x4 03-29-2008, 11:52 AM I think the Toyota 4WD spindles and hubs are a great way to go, but why not run the sraight-axle hubs so you can run longer arms or keep the track width a little narrower?
How much narrower are the solid axle hubs, because I'm trying to bring it in a couple inches right now, but the reason is because the scrub is designed around the IFS hubs and the same wheels i'm running.
MtnToys 03-29-2008, 12:35 PM How much narrower are the solid axle hubs, because I'm trying to bring it in a couple inches right now, but the reason is because the scrub is designed around the IFS hubs and the same wheels i'm running.
Solid axle hubs are slightly less then 1.5" narrower.
Cant wait to see how this build pans out.

65Chevy4x4 04-06-2008, 08:10 PM well no work this weekend, went to the MDR race since my friend was racing, we got 2nd in 1450, well actually I picked up my 9in and 35 spline axles from currie on friday on my way to the race. here's a couple pics of it. 64.5" flange to flange, 70" WMS to WMS which will give me a rear track width of 83", just a couple inches narrower than my front.

The cage is soo tight I'm just gonna weld it to the stock sheetmetal in a lot of areas. here's some pics.

IHblarp 04-15-2008, 01:09 PM Looks :smokin:!!! I had one newb question, and i dont want it to start a flame war, i simply dont understand. so here it goes, why did you put tube splices in the A pillar like that? was it just to make assembly more simple or to make it easier for the next bend to follow the flow of the cab. I've been trying to design a cage and have some ideas on how to do tube splices to allow for future mods and such and was just wondering what your motive was. Hope this doesn't start any controversy like ive seen in other treads. you build looks sick and i wish i had your fab/design skills!!
65Chevy4x4 04-15-2008, 02:53 PM i designed the cage a little different than it ended up and I changed some stuff along the way also I did the bends off a little bit so I had to rotate them to tuck the cage nice and tight. Right now it's touching all above the window and about 1/2" from the bottom of the a-pillar. Also since it's sleeved and plug welded the bend areas will fail way befor ethe splice/sleeve area will. I didn't need a splice on the pass side but wanted it to be uniform so I put one in there to match the drivers side.
Halogrinder 04-15-2008, 03:33 PM question:
does the lower control arm have enough seperation to make it not bend/break the mounts or the arm? it looks like the lower bushings arnt spread out enough? im not a pro at any means, just looking at the pictures.
65Chevy4x4 04-15-2008, 05:24 PM the lower arms on my old truck were this way and I did eventually rip the stock mount off but that was probably because I nailed a good sized rock and the stock mounts are only stick welded on. The spread probably could be a bit wider but I'd have to notch the frame about half way through to get the full amount of up travel. I gusseted the areas that I had problems with much better this time and i shouldn't have any problems this time.
IHblarp 04-15-2008, 05:33 PM cool, i figured it was just to make it fit right:D, but figured id ask anyway. i've been considering doing something similar with my scout cage, just to get it in the position i want and reduce the complexity of my bends(1st cage) and figured thats what you were doing.
65Chevy4x4 04-17-2008, 08:53 PM some more cage pics.

Snoopy 04-22-2008, 12:40 PM How did you design the front arms? Are they an off-the-shelf kit or something you came up with..
65Chevy4x4 04-22-2008, 03:09 PM They are completely 1 off and no based off anything on the market. I haven't seen an a-armed kit for Toyota's with anything that resembles my kit. I would put it into production but have too many other things to worry about then making a couple extra bucks on that stuff.
Snoopy 04-22-2008, 04:46 PM When I built some boat arms for the BajaScout project it took 2 freakin' days to build a set of arms ~ so i completely understand where you're coming from, a few hundred dollars isn't nothing when you consider the time and expense of actually doing the dirty.
If you have a name for that kit ~ or a lead ~ let me know, I've been toying with building a 2WD 'truck' of sorts. Keep up the good work, very nice job on the last one, and this one too.

gg's cj5 04-24-2008, 09:37 PM truck looks real nice. do u have any more pix of the spare tire setup on the blue truck? im gonna do them the same way on my ranger and im looking for mounting ideas.
Lucky_Thirteen 04-24-2008, 09:45 PM Watching this for sure :smokin::smokin:
65Chevy4x4 04-24-2008, 10:22 PM I just made a 3.4" bolt with a big washer and welded a nut to a plate on the tube. Just the basic spinners to hold the spares down. I found the Y ratchet straps are the easiest and IMO the best hold downs out there for flat spares.
gg's cj5 04-24-2008, 10:41 PM i had straps on my last truck but they faded and frayed in the heat out here. im thinkin about using those rubber triangle things and allthread.
65Chevy4x4 04-24-2008, 10:56 PM Another update is that I get to tear apart my engine again. The #7 exhaust valve hits the top of the piston for some reason and that's the only one. Not sure what the problem is I just have to tear it down and see what's going on with the head in there.
AK-Josh 04-27-2008, 10:06 PM Looks good.
How much did the Mc Neal glass cost you? I have been looking at selling my Hannemanns 1 pc taco conversion and moving up to one McNeals Tundra.
65Chevy4x4 04-27-2008, 10:09 PM I got the clip and some big bedsides, wih headlight stickers and clips for $1100. I could've got it from perry for $900 without stickers or clips, so another $100 there and I'd have to drive to San Diego so It would've came out to a bit more than I got it from a local friend. But he usually will sell you the clip and bedsides for $1000.

piratebuggy 05-03-2008, 02:07 PM Did you use a computer program on this one to plot out the front suspension geometry? Looks as cool as the last truck BTW.
65Chevy4x4 05-03-2008, 02:39 PM no I just set the uniball angle at bump for the lower where I wanted it, set the cster and camber at ridehieght and tried a bunch of different lengths, pivot heights, etc... until I felt it was good and built the jig off the mockup arms.
piratebuggy 05-03-2008, 06:03 PM You realize you're giving the computer geeks a seizure right? ;)
Did you try something different from the last truck? I'm guessing it handled OK both on road and off? Just curious- I'm not here to debate your setup.
edabd 05-03-2008, 06:14 PM man, thats a crap load of work. looks great!
65Chevy4x4 05-03-2008, 08:23 PM yeah I changed a lot this time, verticle uniball on this setup, different inner and outer pivot heights, Got the caster set throughout the travel instead of gaining and loosing caster as it cycles. Got it to cycles a little more wheel travel and did a boxed lower with recessed shock mounts instead of ontop of the arm. My old truck handled ok on road and a bit better offroad, this one should do better both on and offroad than the old truck, but I did lose some turning radius with the verticle uniball.

65Chevy4x4 05-04-2008, 09:31 PM they fit 1.5"x.120 wall tube, and I have 10 of them right now.
Halogrinder 05-04-2008, 09:35 PM hmm. ill drum it over, if it was 1.75x.120 id snag a few.... lemme think about it.

mdr_taco 05-06-2008, 07:11 PM i designed the cage a little different than it ended up and I changed some stuff along the way also I did the bends off a little bit so I had to rotate them to tuck the cage nice and tight. if u wanted it to match and be uniform shoodnt u have put the both at the same height so it was atleast pleasing to the eye
65Chevy4x4 05-06-2008, 07:16 PM nah it won't matter it'll get all plated into the a-pillar and you won't even notice it, .but I wish I would've but I cut one side and redid the top bend and it ended up being a little higher, o well it'll still work fine.
Snoopy 05-07-2008, 02:20 PM Couple questions for ya...
1) How far away are the front shock mounts (from each other, bolt to bolt, top and bottom).
2) I'm running into what looks like the same problem with driver side leg room, what's your thoughts on the pedals?
65Chevy4x4 05-07-2008, 02:30 PM the shocks are 6" at the bottom and 6 1/4" at the top. I'm gonna try and squeeze in the pedals but might get a honda pilot wheel and use a hand throttle.
JESSE_at_TLT 05-07-2008, 02:32 PM Why not just use reverse-hanging pedals (with the master cylinders in the cab)?

65Chevy4x4 05-07-2008, 04:23 PM Why not just use reverse-hanging pedals (with the master cylinders in the cab)?
I will never use any CNC style brake setup again after my last build. sure they work but not that good and after spending Tons of time and money to get them to work OK. The stock brakes will work fine and i'm sure i'll get all the pedals in there and working fine. But friends don't let friends use CNC brakes, worst money spent on my last build.
JESSE_at_TLT 05-07-2008, 04:47 PM You know there are several other companies that make similar pedal assemblies, right? I think CNC is pretty much bottom of the barrel in the racing world.
65Chevy4x4 05-07-2008, 05:11 PM You know there are several other companies that make similar pedal assemblies, right? I think CNC is pretty much bottom of the barrel in the racing world.
Yeah I rather spend the money on other upgrades as the stock brakes work good and I have enough room for them. I know CNC isn't that great of quality and are now closed, but My friend run's a nice ass willwood setup, complete calipers, MC with the right bore that there tech said and it still isn't as good as a stock power setup.
Arya Ebrahimi 05-07-2008, 05:15 PM the shocks are 6" at the bottom and 6 1/4" at the top. I'm gonna try and squeeze in the pedals but might get a honda pilot wheel and use a hand throttle.
Forgive my ignorance. What does a Honda Pilot wheel do?
65Chevy4x4 05-07-2008, 05:20 PM it's kinda like an odyssey it has the hand throttle and brakes on the wheel itself. It was a joke over on DR but actually not that bad of an idea.
JESSE_at_TLT 05-07-2008, 06:02 PM I didn't pick up on the joke either. Keep 'em if they work. I'm still using stock brakes in my Toyota too.
65Chevy4x4 05-11-2008, 07:34 PM got some TC king kong steering for the truck, and got the tierod mounts on the spindles located, just need to gusset them up. Also finished up the firewall today and pulled the motor to figure out what's wrong with it.

65Chevy4x4 05-14-2008, 11:19 PM well my engine I have is almost shot, the crank needs to be turned down, all new bearings, new pistons, couple new valves and redo the head work, new cam all that good stuff. I guess that's what happens when you buy used and dont' know all the history of the motor.
piratebuggy 05-15-2008, 05:37 AM Might be better off buying a new Goodwrench motor and ditching that as a core. Just a thought.
Mr. Mindless 05-15-2008, 10:56 AM My thought as well, piratebuggy. Unless theres something special about that engine I don't see the attraction to rebuilding rather than replacing unless you have a cheap machine shop hookup.
Halogrinder 05-15-2008, 12:52 PM sucks. i can have my machinist build you a BADASS engine, even dyno tune it as well. only thing that limits the horsepower is the wallet :)
65Chevy4x4 05-15-2008, 02:42 PM dropped off the engine and a new crank I had in the side yard at the machine shop. He's putting brand new sealed power pistons, new roller cam w/lifters, all the head work, all new bearings and seals througout all for $800 including the $350 piston w/rings. I also gave him a set of h-beam rods to use for it. It should be all back together in a couple weeks since he's doing it on the side for me.
piratebuggy 05-15-2008, 07:09 PM That's the hookup! Sounds good man.
65Chevy4x4 05-15-2008, 11:09 PM shitty pics but it's of a toast motor, time for some new upgrades to hoepfully make some more power.
Where the valves slapped the top of the piston.

Nice copper colored bearings explains the can of copper coat throughout the engine. Also the nice grooved crank, good thing I have a spare.

Beat95YJ 05-16-2008, 12:12 AM Crack the original cam over the head of the guy that sold it to you! :mad3:
piratebuggy 05-16-2008, 05:32 AM Did you actually get to hear that run before you bought it? I'd take the crank and whack him. $&it happens.......
65Chevy4x4 05-16-2008, 10:53 AM no i didn't so It was a toss up. the components that are good are worth more than I paid for it so it's alright. The person I bought it from got it from a friend and you all know how that goes.
piratebuggy 05-17-2008, 08:30 PM I've made that gamble before and never had a bad experience but this goes to show I was just lucky. As long as you got your moneys worth it's all good right? You got a nice hook up from the machine shop so your 355 will smoke a Goodwrench any day, just looking at the cost factor there.
Halogrinder 05-18-2008, 01:16 PM give the rods to the machine shop if you huck them, they can resize them again.
65Chevy4x4 05-18-2008, 09:53 PM I'm taking them all the parts and they are gonne setup the bottom end for me, degree the cam and all that stuff. Then i'll throw on the top end and the rest of the stuff.
leadtheway 05-18-2008, 10:37 PM awesome build I can't wait to see the progress
65Chevy4x4 05-18-2008, 10:44 PM here's some of the links I made today.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b199/85yota/links002-1.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b199/85yota/links003-1.jpg
i understand the idea of insetting the shocks into the bars, but it just seems like they would just fill up with shite and cause premature wear to the shock heims, do you guys stuff them with foam or what?????
65Chevy4x4 05-18-2008, 11:08 PM After every beach run or race I just hose everything down and blow out the holes with an air comp, never had a problem with it in the past, but the front arms do have a drain hole in them for water.
JESSE_at_TLT 05-18-2008, 11:40 PM Why are those links any deeper than they need to be to clear the lower heims?
65Chevy4x4 05-19-2008, 12:16 AM I've seen a few sets of links that wern't very tall fail since they don't have enough material at the shock mounts are, even with double plating them. Also my links have atleast 2 more inches ground clearance then my olds ones and those only hit 1 rock at full bump with 2 races on it. I could make them lower but rather be overbuilt and not worry about it.
AK-Josh 05-19-2008, 04:11 PM What are you using for actual tube? We have been building links out of thick walled pipe, it was all we can get up here before we had a line on DOM. Ive seen where people have made the main tube out of .120 wall DOM, think its strong enough?
65Chevy4x4 05-19-2008, 10:56 PM I'm using 1.75x.120 DOM with 3/16" plate for th trailing arms, my old ones were 1.75x.120 wall mild with 1/8" plate and never had a problem.
toyin 05-21-2008, 05:49 PM Sucks about the motor but at least this way you know what you have. The engine compartment, front suspension, and rear links look sweet. Keep up the good work.
sha_ba_do_bang 05-22-2008, 08:19 AM A couple questions about the front suspension. What are the saw five tube shocks for, do they provide any suspension or are they basically just big shocks to help absorb load when jumping
Do the coilovers provide the suspension in the front?
fastg60 05-22-2008, 09:36 AM great job! amazing build and engineering.
shaggyk5 05-22-2008, 10:35 AM A couple questions about the front suspension. What are the saw five tube shocks for, do they provide any suspension or are they basically just big shocks to help absorb load when jumping
Do the coilovers provide the suspension in the front?
yes.
65Chevy4x4 05-23-2008, 04:55 PM the coilovers are basically just coil carriers, they provide the springs and some valving, the big shocks are to keep them from fading after racing for 500 miles. And for when I want to hit big jumps.
AK-Josh 05-27-2008, 11:32 AM What are you planning on running for your spring rates?
65Chevy4x4 05-27-2008, 12:57 PM front is a 10" 500lb, over 14" 700lb. the rear is a 12" 350 over a 16" 450.
65Chevy4x4 06-01-2008, 11:01 PM few updates, built my own links, and am in the process of collecting the parts to link my friends truck, here's some of the links I building for him.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b199/85yota/joeylinks002.jpg
fj40forlife 06-01-2008, 11:04 PM What sizes heim you use for lower links? and im pretty sure you use a poly bushing up front so it would not move?
65Chevy4x4 06-01-2008, 11:05 PM 1" bore 1.25" thread heim, I actually am using a delrin bushing on these links, the old urathane ones didn't last long on the old truck.
65Chevy4x4 06-05-2008, 09:17 PM Basically finished up the front suspension and engine cage except for bumps and straps, but here's some of the steering and caliper mounts on the spindles. Also picked up some more goodies, shifter will be here next week, now onto the interior and seat mounts.

JESSE_at_TLT 06-05-2008, 10:28 PM Double-shear brake mounts? Don't see that too often.
Bradford 06-06-2008, 12:00 PM I believe that is a toe link, at least that is what it looks like
:smokin: welding,
Edit -- my bad, i was looking at the bottom pic
65Chevy4x4 06-06-2008, 01:51 PM yeah I don't have room to run 1 thick tab on either side of the caliper so I ran double shear 1/4" tabs with some thin spacers on either side of the caliper so I can shim it to get it centered perfectly. It should work out fine, I've seen it done a couple times before, but not that often.
65Chevy4x4 06-09-2008, 10:40 PM well got almost everything up front suspension and cage wise tied up except mounting bumps. Also plated up the frame where I notched it to fit the coilover, and I was tired of the rust so I cleaned it up and painted everything and got the firewall all done so I can put the engine back in. here's a couple pics.

piratebuggy 06-20-2008, 05:24 AM Put a fake pedal/footrest for the left foot like the sportscar guys do. Helps hold you in place and keeps the feet from bouncing around.

65Chevy4x4 06-22-2008, 08:32 PM ok so finished up almost everythign up front, just need to mount straps and make tierods. here's a couple pics of the bump mounts and everything. Also set her down on the ground, so almost 1/2 way done.

mdr_taco 07-21-2008, 05:43 PM i noticed ur front clip sits about 3 inches forward. why. not the one for the truck( i know they make that bodystyle tundra conversion), wanted to stretch the wb, or poor planing?
maxyedor 07-21-2008, 06:02 PM I'm just guessing here, but he moved the font wheels forward quite a bit, probably moved the clip to match.
bAdYoTa 07-21-2008, 06:19 PM Sick build I'm gellous as hell I want one bad but gotta finish the Crawler first then that will be money pit #2
stealthcammo1 07-21-2008, 10:59 PM he moved his cab back like 5inches i think to make room for the SBC.
fabtoys 07-22-2008, 05:34 AM sweet build
65Chevy4x4 07-22-2008, 04:13 PM yeah cab back 5in to clear everything easier and wheel forward 2inches, so I had to push the clip to center it up.
mdr_taco 07-22-2008, 10:27 PM ok so if the cab is back 5in are the bed sides gonna be shorter or is it getting stretched 5 in back. cause if so thats a total of 7 in stretch and i dont thing u can run that in any race classes cause i think it is 2in+- on wheel base in most classes. iff ur gonna race it idk
65Chevy4x4 07-23-2008, 12:04 PM the wheelbase is now 111" and stock is 105, so the standard shortbed bedsides work. I race 1450 and 1400 which is sportsman so no chassis rules, just saftey stuff.
slammed1 07-31-2008, 02:02 AM After seeing your driveway build an dnow this one I must say I am stoked at what I see you do and with what tools you have at your dispoal. Reminds me of me! 65Chevy4x4 07-31-2008, 10:21 PM ok well i've been busting my ass the past month now trying to get it ready for the MDR night race August 16th. I have from sat till the monday after the race off from work to finish this thing up. I need to still wire and plumb it, build fan shroud, weld roof back on, assemble rearend, pull apart front and change a few bolts and stuff, exhaust, power steering lines, and steering shaft. 65Chevy4x4 07-31-2008, 10:43 PM i sent in my form already but havn't got my number, prob gonna run 1450 since it'll seriously be the first time out with the truck.
JESSE_at_TLT 08-01-2008, 12:25 AM It looks like the door-braces go straight back from the dash along the inner door panel to the back of the cab. I built my Tacoma the same way, and wish I'd cut out the inner door panels to make more elbow-room. I actually had to cut-out the A-pillar brace and replace it with a bent one. How was your last truck set-up?

]4RunnerKid[ 08-01-2008, 08:17 AM looks great Tommy, can't wait to see it in action at the night race :smokin:
65Chevy4x4 08-01-2008, 10:51 AM last truck just had one diagonal door bar, no a-pillar support of bar going to the dash bar. My bars have bends on each end and touch the door when it's shut. I still like having windows when I go to pismo and stuff so I didn't cut out the door panels yet.
fabtoys 08-01-2008, 11:52 PM I guess your a short guy and a gymnist/contorsionist to get in that thing with such a high door bar
65Chevy4x4 08-02-2008, 12:58 AM acutally i'm 6'1" 210lbs, I can get in and out easy but well see when all the shit is on there.
fabtoys 08-02-2008, 08:14 AM Your lucky to have Pismo an 30 minutes away for testing! I used to go to Pismo once a month and had a 4runner truggy with a small block white with blue cage. I pulled everyone and any thing even Steve's towing once ,used to make people sign the side of the runner if they got pulled out ! Sold to a guy who still goes there.
65Chevy4x4 08-08-2008, 10:28 PM getting close gonna fire it up this weekend, and finish up everything for the race next sat. Gonna cut it close, not 100% sure if i'm gonna be racing yet.

fabtoys 08-24-2008, 03:57 PM I think you need a diagonals behind you and the co-driver for safety and score rules
65Chevy4x4 08-26-2008, 10:26 PM yeah it needs the diagonals but I can't run it to the corner or i'll hit my head, and i'll never race score and MDR says it's fine so i'll run it like it is, i'm sure it's plenty safe with the shock mounts and everything.
Beat95YJ 08-26-2008, 10:35 PM yeah it needs the diagonals but I can't run it to the corner or i'll hit my head, and i'll never race score and MDR says it's fine so i'll run it like it is, i'm sure it's plenty safe with the shock mounts and everything.
Run them off the down bars outside the cage. That is what I am doing.

The tow rig works good enough to get it the 5 blocks to the beach and 20 minutes to my parents house when it's needed, runs great, just needs some work. here's a couple pics of it, and how I got my SN>

gtxracer 08-29-2008, 12:48 PM Kickass! That tow rig is pretty slick man. I'd love to live that close to the beach. :smokin: build man!
65Chevy4x4 08-31-2008, 05:54 PM shitty weekend at pismo but lots of lessons learned. Well truck did great all day until about 3:00 heading back to camp I smelt some gas and before I knew it there was a big poof and flames were shooting out of the engine compartments and on the pass floorboard by my friends girlfirends feet. I grabed the exstinguisher and started spraying on the fire, tunred off the battery, while she got out, I then leaped out of the truck and kept on spraying the exstinguishers on it, took 4 exstinguishers and 2 bottles of water along with a bunch of sand to put the fire out for good. No major damage besides some wire, fuel line, air filter, and 1 shock res hose. Overall I got out pretty damn lucky, and no more rubber fuel ines or fuel regulator above the engine.
Mr. Mindless 08-31-2008, 07:22 PM nice save! fuel fires are tricky motherfuckers. glad you saved the truck, that would really have been a bitch.
piratebuggy 08-31-2008, 09:53 PM You had 4 extinguishers in the truck? Lucky move in hindsight. Reminds me to put one in my Jeep.
65Chevy4x4 08-31-2008, 10:10 PM no I had 1 in the cab, 1 on the bedcage, and 2 campers right next to the fire had 2 smaller ones. But I always keep 2 on the truck at all time.
piratebuggy 08-31-2008, 10:15 PM Were you able to track down what happened exactly?- so others don't make the same mistake.
94toytruck 08-31-2008, 10:39 PM This is the 3rd rig in 3 weeks I seen that has lit up. 2 other guys had hydro lines blow and light there rigs up. Glad people are carrying fire gear with.
65Chevy4x4 09-01-2008, 11:53 AM shitty rubber fuel lines got a hole in it somehow, it was all secured with those rubber over metal clamps to the firewall and down the frame but I just smelt gas and poof. I'm probably gonn ainvest in a flame out system before any racing just in case.
piratebuggy 09-01-2008, 12:17 PM That sucks but at least no one got hurt.
I noticed some years ago that the NHRA rule book only allowed small sections of rubber fuel line, you had to have steel fuel line except to connect to stuff basically. Makes sense from a safety stand point so I've tried to do that on all my vehicles since then. Just get some steel brake/fuel line from Autocalzone and bent it up instead of the rubber stuff.
JESSE_at_TLT 09-01-2008, 02:08 PM Yeah, sorry to hear that. I've used rubber hose from Earls in the past (the stuff intended for push-lock fittings) and it's a lot burlier than regular fuel line, but it's not nearly as expensive as running braided lines and AN fittings.
Strange 09-02-2008, 08:43 AM truck and fab look great, cant wait for more air shots
bitchin tow rig to :smokin:
Snoopy 09-02-2008, 02:46 PM And here I was hoping to see some new pictures from the long weekend!
erik415 09-02-2008, 06:57 PM And here I was hoping to see some new pictures from the long weekend!
Where are the fire pictures?
65Chevy4x4 09-03-2008, 01:32 PM here's a couple damage isn't bad at all. Gonna replace all the fuel lines with steel braided, new plug wires, air cleaner, fuel reg w/gauge, new engine compartment wiring, and a couple other small things, not as bad as it could've been.

OregonYO 09-04-2008, 10:27 PM I ran aluminum tube for fuel line, from summit. I bent it around a small pulley to shape it , then put on a tube sleeve and nut like these, and flare it

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=EAR%2D981908ERL&N=700+115&autoview=sku
I was able to run this tube from the cell to the pump, and from pump to carb with no rubber or braid.

hows the fire restoration coming along?
im goin through withdrawls here, we need more pics of this thing getting it in the des.:smokin:
65Chevy4x4 09-18-2008, 03:26 PM got it almost back together just need to run the new lines, new res hose put on and then clean up the wiring a bit and it'll be ready to go.
piratebuggy 09-19-2008, 08:04 PM Went and got an extinguisher for my Jeep the other day from thinking about this thread.
65Chevy4x4 09-20-2008, 02:40 AM that's good to hear hope you never have to use it, honestly it won't be the same driving it after this it will always be in the back of my mind for sure.
Lucky_Thirteen 10-05-2008, 11:43 AM updates :D
65Chevy4x4 10-05-2008, 11:44 AM it'll be back together this week for some more testing, then racing the november 8th MDR race
jsudar 10-12-2008, 03:59 PM here's some of the links I made today.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b199/85yota/links001-1.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b199/85yota/links002-1.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b199/85yota/links003-1.jpg
Wouldn't it make more sense to mount the shocks in the arm so they sit lower than the centerline of the link to keep the link from twisting? That would help from tearing up bushings so fast. Or does that eat up too much ground clearance?
65Chevy4x4 10-16-2008, 02:33 PM I could have mounted the below the centerline but I would've had to get longer rod ends for the bypass to clear everything which would change the mounts I had built, also the mounts are really close to centerline and the bushing seem to be just fine so far. I ran the same setup in the past without any problems and 1000's of miles on the truck. But if I were to do it again, I might possibly redesign the lower links to get them below centerline and use all plate to not sacrifice ground clearance.
chromeyellow 10-19-2008, 10:51 PM cool truck, fun following this one too (except the fire bit)
thomatt12 10-22-2008, 07:40 PM Good job on building the ride. I will follow this thread for more updates. Keep it up!

65Chevy4x4 11-05-2008, 07:40 PM Well just got the truck 100% ready for the race on sat in Barstow. Gonna be leaving friday around 11. if anyone else is going stop by and say hi/
65Chevy4x4 11-09-2008, 07:10 PM Well quick race recap. DNF..... Basically it was driver error and DOM upper arm instead of chromo. Went into a corner a little fast, landed on 1 tire pretty hard and bent the upper arm right at the bend enough to make it so I couldn't turn left and the arm would hit the shock and engine cage. I'll get a couple pics of the damage tom, but overall it was running great before that happened.
RuggedRadios 11-09-2008, 09:04 PM Ahh bummer man... get some pics up!
RuggedRadios 11-09-2008, 09:06 PM BTW, you hear about 1473 Rob today at Pismo? :(

Not to pee in anyones wheaties, but put this in another thread or keep it to pm's. Do not sidetrack this thread.
65Chevy4x4 11-09-2008, 11:03 PM Yeah I got a call earlier about the accident rob had, very unfortunate but there's nothing you can do to stop something like this from happening, it could've been anybody. But my truck will be back together hopefully tom or wed and ready to go out to the dunes whenever the next group trip is.
Beat95YJ 11-09-2008, 11:17 PM I should be up there next Sat fwiw. Likely rolling up in my Tahoe. (Giant 1749 stickers on it) Not sure if we are in the Poly shop or the dunes on sat. Will post up if we head out.
yotasavg 12-16-2008, 03:31 PM cool build i'm interested to see where this ends up. i got some really nice ideas from your rear suspension setup.
65Chevy4x4 02-12-2009, 11:48 PM OK well a few updates, been to pismo a dozen or so times, havn't broke anything except the upper arm at the last race. Got a sway bar all mounted up now, and I'm heading out to Primm, NV tom morning to race against 72 1450 trucks at SNORE Battle at Primm. It's going to be a hell of a race, hopefully without any problems for me.

Tear it up down there man! Wish I could go! Gonna be a heck of a race!
Mr. Mindless 02-13-2009, 10:46 AM good luck!! Looking forward to hearing about how you kicked ass out there :)

Were you going thru Barstow around 1ish Friday? looked like your truck.
65Chevy4x4 02-16-2009, 06:41 PM yeah we went through barstow at like 1 on friday. Well I had major carb issues that put me out sat, and then sunday we were doing good and last lap snapped the centerlink on the steering after hitting a jump.
benttoy 02-17-2009, 12:53 PM yeah we went through barstow at like 1 on friday. Well I had major carb issues that put me out sat, and then sunday we were doing good and last lap snapped the centerlink on the steering after hitting a jump.
I thought that was your truck looks good :smokin: to bad you had issues go get em next time
65Chevy4x4 02-17-2009, 04:09 PM yeah it was a total chaos king kong steering centerlink, so i'm sending them pics and gonna see what's going on and see if they can help me out any.
piratebuggy 02-22-2009, 08:49 AM Send us pics too- I dig carnage stuff :)
65Chevy4x4 02-22-2009, 11:48 PM well it turned out that the centerlink I bought off race-dezert wasn't a total chaos one, but an amplified performance one, which basically ripped off a lot of total chaos's stuff in early 2000's. So I'm gonna build a new beefier one, .250 wall here I come.
erik415 03-07-2009, 11:19 PM updates? pictures of your new centerlink? new pictures of it all done?
Snoopy 03-12-2009, 09:16 PM After the amount of pictures from your previous build, I have to say I'm a little disappointed of the lack of pictures in this thread. Yes, I'm giving you a hard time, but you've got some skills, we liked seeing them before, and its disheartening when over-and-over I come back and yet no new pictures.
That said. I love seeing what you do. Very inventive and a great fabricator. I've used pictures from your old build to look at and help solve issues on a 'desert' race build I did pro-bono for a guy here about a year ago ~ so post some pics ~ lots of them. 'Completed' picts, 'flying' pics, 'doing a roasty in the dunes' pics ~ 'overall from this and that angle' pics ~ FREAKIN ANY PICS!
That is all ;)
65Chevy4x4 03-12-2009, 11:36 PM O man, Well I don't live at my parents anymore, and I dont' have hardly any cash now to go out so there's not really any action pics of vids yet. I'm heading out to pismo this sat and will get you guys some pics and vids for sure. heres a couple from Battle at Primm to hold you off for now.

65Chevy4x4 03-14-2009, 08:59 PM well pismo was a bust, killed my new th400 tranny so it's getting taken out tom and rebuilt monday and back in tuesday hopefully. WEll If I got any pics i'll know like monday or tuesday i did mob for a little bit but not too much.
65Chevy4x4 07-01-2009, 09:33 AM Well pretty much only updates so far have been new transmissions and 3rd members. Need to get some cryo'ed gears so they will actual last.
onepersonriot 07-01-2009, 01:11 PM Instead of telling us what is wrong with the truck why don't you just make a list of what is not broken? :flipoff2:

thats a NICE 9inch truss and link setup.
i need to figgure out how to keep my shit from warping, and when it does how to fix it.
65Chevy4x4 08-19-2009, 11:18 AM Well went out and raced the MDR night race. broke a shifter cable first lap so i was in 2nd gear only, sucked only going 45mph top speed, and cooking the motor at 4000rpm for 5 hours straight. But i got a finish out of it. And I got a new sponsor here's a link to some pics and new paint.
http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/Pro-Spotlight-Tommy-Trego-sp-84.html
texasammi 08-19-2009, 02:15 PM dammn man, some paint really turned that truck around. It looked wicked before all primer flat but it looks like a serious race truck now. Nice work man, I'd be proud.
65Chevy4x4 11-08-2009, 08:08 PM Well this past weekend I did the MDR stoddard 250. The race was 5 laps at 25miles long. Race started out good, no problems till MM20 on lap 1 when the battery cable came off the battery. 3-4 minutes got it all back on and off we were again. No stops again till start of 3rd lap for a quick check of the truck, zip tieing the broken exhaust out of the way and off we go. Finish that lap, everything is going good till the inner tie rod bolt sheared stopping us in our tracks. Screwed with it for a few minutes till I decided t oshove a 1/2" drive extension where the bolt was and duct taped it into place. Cruised 3 miles to the road crossing and waiting for my brother to bring us a new bolt. He shows up and the bolt is barely long enough, so we get it in there and off we go. There was only about 1/2 a nut worth of threads engauged into the nut so we cruised around to finish that lap. Stopped at our pit, checked the bolts and cruised around the last lap for the finish. Finished 6th out of 10 starters and 8 finishers. Not th ebest finish but it still counts. Full front end rebuilt to come, I bent another set of upper arms with the bumps mounted off them, and steering is getting totally re-done to hopefully fix the problems i've been having.
