: Bracing cage to the frame
texican 07-11-2002, 03:04 PM Josh and I have gotten all of the main bars bent and started today connecting the dots, attached is the first of 6 from the lower legs of the cage to the frame. Notice we took one of the mini guys over on the other boards suggestion, to use a scab plate on the frame instead of just butt welding the tubing, he says he has had some pull off the frame and take frame metal with it.

texican 07-11-2002, 03:08 PM This shot is from above, shows the angle iron which all 3 of the rear hoops will beattached, barely visible is the plate which the angle will be welded onto, spreading the load out farther, and allowing access to the matching plate underneath.

Jason M 07-11-2002, 03:12 PM nice,
are you goign to support the tight radius on the frame side?
Very cool....
texican 07-11-2002, 03:18 PM Don't plan on it, this is 2' .120 wall HREW or what ever the acronym is, I don't think it's going anywhere.

texican 07-11-2002, 03:37 PM Last picture for the day, we are closing up, it's 102 with 75% hum. here.......too hot to weld !!!
This is the rear support on the passengers side.
Jason M 07-11-2002, 03:42 PM Wimp,
ERG?
HREW? ;)
Is that one of those vertical welds on a FRAME!?!?!?!?
I thought no one did that because it make the frame oh so weak ;)
Wanna come out to Vegas and attach my cage to the frame for me??? :D
It is only 116 here
wngrog 07-11-2002, 04:03 PM I want to do this to my cage exactly like that....I also have the angle in the rear to spread the load...don't you think one attachment in the rear to the main hoops is enough?
I thought that would be all I did....that and bracing the front "legs" to the frame....4 places total....
lowrider 07-11-2002, 04:23 PM The first photo is of the front support and the 3rd photo is on the rear support. These 2 supports are bolted to the scab plate on top of the wheel wells. Nice job!
helocat 07-11-2002, 04:34 PM Butch,
Looks great! I just might do the same on my rig! For welding to the frame I would not do it any other way, scab plats make since!
BTW those corners do look good. (wheal well)
texican 07-11-2002, 04:38 PM Mace I been to Vegas in the summer, I'll swap with you, you probably have 0 humidity, the heat kills you here.
Nolen, I don't know, about using only 4 braces, we are blazing new ground for us here.....you are probably talking an hour or 2 labor for the other 2, it really changes your outlook, when you are doing this kind of work for someone else, that is about as daring as you, plus a good friend.
Don't know if I could take it if something bad happened and I thought I may have cut a corner that could have prevented it.
Butch
TxCruzr 07-11-2002, 05:47 PM Mine is only attached to the frame in 4 places but then my cage is a 4 point cage with the stock bar behind it, kind of like Harold Off's CJ-8. If/When I get a full cage...8pt...then I would go ahead and spend a little extra time and do it at all 8 pts...like Butch said.

Tell him it's still not safe!! Thatta way he'll be less apt to a act a fool. If you tell 'em it's bullet proof, he'll push the envelope, I'll put money on it!!!:D
captain 07-11-2002, 11:14 PM that is some crrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaazy metal work. nice job
Aggro 07-12-2002, 07:00 AM I think I am ok with your plans!! Same idea just heavier. 3/16" flat broke with two 90* angles to fit fender. Drill a bunch of holes in it now before you mount it permanently for cargo tie downs!
Aggro 07-12-2002, 07:01 AM here's my frame attachment. Do great minds really think alike???
Aggro 07-12-2002, 07:02 AM And the rear most frame attachment. I kept mine very close to the frame/tub to reduce stress on the bend right at the frame.
texican 07-12-2002, 03:09 PM Real close to alike.....notice the hole on the rear brace?
The scab plate Josh fabbed covers it, Chris Geiger was the guy over on the mini board that was cautioning about not using them.....who knows really though...unless one fails. from what i see his rigs get rolled almost as often as Nolen's!!

Bulldog 07-12-2002, 07:06 PM It looks like the roll bar is going to be pretty sturdy. I have a question for you thoug, will the tires rub on the lower support that you have welded to the frame at all or is there enough clearance when wheeling or upon compression of the axle.:usa:
texican 07-13-2002, 11:46 AM We twisted it up in the shop, and they cleared bya couple of inches, however if they do hit it will be on the tread area of the Boggers, won't hurt anything.
This beast has SO with some kind of arched springs (not flat OEMs) and longer shackles, so it's at least 3" taller than my SO'd rig.

One thought is to make the tube run straight and angle cut the ends. This would eliminate the bends and give more room, also you would not see the muffler shop style bends with a deformed radius. A good penetrating weld to the frame, shouldn't go anywhere, assuming it's solid, but a scab plate can't hurt.
Looks good:beer:
