I cannot believe I am even considering this but my bud in Seattle called me and his friend has a 1974 FJ 40 for sale for $1000. It ran when parked but has been sitting for a while. My bud drove it and said the brakes are good and there is only slight surface rust but no bubbling or holes through the body. The only bad part is that the fiberglass roof needs some work and the seats are shot. Should I do it? Is there an F or 2F in the 74 and what are the snog requirements on this year?

Hey,

That sounds like a good deel, he must not have it in the papers because I have been looking frantically for months for a good deal. If you dont want it please email me his info or post back here, I am in Seattle.

Thanks,

;) Yeah this is one of those found in a barn of a friend sorta deals. The guy's dad just gave him a 76 with 32,000 original miles on it so he wants to get rid of this one.:D

Ken, Sounds like a damn good deal:) I believe a 74 has the 2F engine. Grab that sucker!! Even if you just turn it, you can make some good $$$$ on it down here.
BTW, Maybe you can let me borrow it so we can go wheelin together.:D
Let me know if you buy it. Brad.

'74's were the last year of the F, and *some* had a stock 4 speed in them. Sounds like a pretty good deal, though!

Yep, if it's an early 74 it'll have an "F" motor and a 3spd. If it's a later 74, it'll have a 2F and a 4spd.

'74's are a 4-speed tranny.

The '74 was a transition year for the transfer cases. You essentially get the 4-speed housing with the 3-speed internal gears and the transition input gear. 16% lower gearing than a '75. NOT all of them had it, and the only way to tell is to count rotations, but I had one with that setup.

Additionally, it has a transition year head on the block. It is setup as an F motor, however the head is compatible with the 2F block, and is a nice compression upgrade for a 2F. This is the ONLY year they can be interchanged. (smaller head combustion chamber.)

Beyond that, it outta have bucket seats, factory cage, 3-door rear access, and all the usual stuff. Wipers are at the top of the window.

In my experience, the terms "slight surface rust" and "Seattle" are not commonly used in the same sentence describing 28 year old vehicles. :D I would still jump on this Cruiser, but don't be too surprised if the rust is a bit more widespread.

the real question is of plausability, can you and are you willing to get time off of work to get it? If so, then go for it; I just wish I could get hooked up on that deal!

I am a freelance film worker not some cubicle jockey, who just happens to have next week off.:D If nothing else I just gotta send a check and have bud store it in his garage until I get a chance to pick it up at my leisure.;)

I Picked up a 74 last October, it was a buddies fj40 that sat in his parents yard for 2 years after he moved away. Mine was built in Dec of 74 and is considered a 74 not a 75. I think that 74 was the longest production year of FJ40's but am not sure. I do have a 4spd with the 3 spd transfer case and with the 4.11's in the rear it is a slow crawler with 35's on it. Let me know if your in SanDiego cause You can always look at mine if you need ideas.

MOPAR MOPAR! Buy it! Who cares if its an F or 2F? If it runs and the body is great, why not? A light surface sand and some tssst tssst (Spray Can) should fix everything up. Take a look behind the 1/4 panels, the lower section. The rust usually starts there. Anyways, good luck with it!

So? Did you get it yet? Fill us in on the details, was it as good as you though; were there any unforseen problems?
