My 40 has a 327 in it and I am trying to replace the starter. I purchased a starter that was suppose to fit my motor but it won't go up in there! Is there anything special to the starter because of the conversion? I really can't see why it wouldn't just be a chevy starter!

you might have to ask for one for a 4 spd vehicle.

nothing is ever easy on this damn thing. I finally found the starter that fits correctly and now I can't get it to turn over at all! I tried jump starting it and I checked all of the connections. I really don't understand what could be wrong. There is one wire from the battery and two wires that appear to come from the ignition, nothing fancy! What could be the problem?

can you turn the engine over using a fly wheel tool, or large pry bar? if so, then i'd go after electrical problems. is your ground wire connected firmly at both ends? how about the hot lead? pull both cables off the battery, clean the terminals and put the wires back on. hope that helps you narrow down the problem.

Starters are picky sometimes, make sure the connection is clean with the wires and that the unit is fit snug. I had a similar problem when I was changing mine, but with a few minor adjustments, it was fine. Good luck!
