: Can I machine my D20 tcase a little?

I have a T15/D20 combo on my 73 cj and I recently roasted the transfer case (I know its a boat anchor, trying to get it running for one more trip) . I got a replacement at the yard, and it is slightly different. In the original there is a recessed area from about 4 o'clock to 6 o'clock where it bolts to the T15, and no recessed area on the new one. There are two "plugs" that stick out of the T15 that fit in this area.

Can I machine a recession in the new tcase?

Can I grind off the plugs on the T15?

I have a friend with a full shop (CNC) and I'm sure he could do it. Looks like there's plenty of metal there too.

Any ideas/experiences?

TIA

sounds odd, do you know what year you got the replacement 20 off of?

If you do any griding I'd do it to the 20. they are easy to find and pretty cheap. T15 is a little harder to find at least in these parts.

Not sure what it came out of, it was attached to a jeep tranny/bellhousing though. It's identical to my old one in every way except for that. Metal thickness is the same in that spot too, so I guess I'll mill it and see what happens

if the old case had the indent- mill the new one. The protrusions could be shift fork levers?

The Dana 20 case is a pretty simple case to work on, why not swap all the guts from the new case into the case from the old case, unless you broke the case, in which case, you could machine your case, but it might be easier to find another case, and a spare case would be nice to have, just in case.

could be from a Scout. they used AMC motors and similar trannies for a long time.

I've thought that too about the Scout possibility. Guess I'll mill it and run it.
