Has anyone ever done this or is this a stupid idea? My brother just gave me a 91 Subaru DL and I have a Samurai with no motor. The 1.8 is fuel injected and has pretty good get up and go. He gave it to me because the auto tranny in it is dead. 1st and 2nd still work sorta. I have kicked around the idea of building an adapter so I could run a Toyota trans or a small chevy auto. Looks like it would be similiar to the VW deisel adapter. I am not building this to be a DD or a highway cruiser, purely a crawler. I don't know the exact weight of the motor , but it can't be much. (looks like a VW-opposed horizontal 4 cyl.). It also looks like I could mount the motor farther forward in the engine bay to get more length to work with. Any input is much appreciated.

I would just sell the whole thing and buy a 1.6.

I've kinda given up on this project. The engine has to go over the frame rails or have a big notch cut out.
