Finally mounted shocks under my poor little project and finished up a couple of other minor details. Then mounted the bald 33's that I got when I traded for a 71 scout II. Figured that it was as good a time to see how much of a mess I had made and what else needed to be fixed. I decided to make a run into the pit in the back yard, that is when I found out I can't eyeball a straight line anymore. I knew that the front drive shaft was really close to the bell housing but it didn't look like it would hit, and everything else looked like it would clear. I hit a little washout harder than I should have and heard a thump, not a good sound. Looked underneath and here was a trickle of oil from the motor. The heavier shaft that I had built had come up and hit the oilpan. I don't know if I should build a thinner shaft, more lift, or longer bump stops for now any suggestions? I know it would help if I had a real motor instead of the little four popper but that project is down the list a ways.

What bar hit? Sounds like you have coils and a 3link using a ford style track bar?
If this is the case, I would either mount the track bar lower @ the frame or higher @ the axle or a little of both, then reinforce the mount since it would then have more leverage against it.

For a quick fix, I'd lower the bump stops till you can afford to or have the time to do the above.

If you don't have coils and a 3 link, well never mind, I guess I don't know enough about your ride yet.

EDIT: I just reread that. Is it your Drive Shaft that hit it?? Wierd.

When I swapped axles the housing on the new one is inset more towards the center than the dana 27, slantng the driveshaft more towards dangerous territory. I think I'll put longer stops on for now. I don't want to replace anything this late in the summer since I just got it finished enough to run for awhile and the only major date is the mud run in Great Falls next month. I am using a leaf suspension, there isn't anything around here rough enough to need really long travel.

If time and money are the issue, run the longer stops. You'll be in the mud not much use for travel.....
