: Please analyze my gear pattern....
TJEli 03-22-2008, 07:31 PM After some work, this is the pattern I have now with resistance applied to the ring gear. Does it look acceptable to you experts? D30, 4.88s.

Thanks for the TT. I tightened up the backlash ever so slightly and called it good. She will be rolling tomorrow. We will see how long this set of gears lasts. :shaking:

parrothead 03-24-2008, 02:53 PM It will never work with all that yellow paint on there...
jeeper8650 03-24-2008, 05:07 PM the pattern looks fine. Run it.
Travis Waldher 03-24-2008, 05:55 PM If it's an RC30, I'de say you are pretty good.
If it's a standard 30, I think you may be too close to the edge of the tooth.
Remember, on a standard 30, your coast side is the drive side.

Oops, missed that. The people I have been around, when someone says "drive side" they mean drive side, not the drive side relative to the application.
TJEli 03-25-2008, 06:01 PM Thanks guys.

heapxj 03-25-2008, 07:37 PM The pattern looks ok but that locker will spell sudden doom. I'm not busting your balls here but I did that w/ 4.88's and it was the worst mistake I could have ever made. Countless U joints exploded, ring and pinion twice as well as a shaft. Leave it open. :)

That locker has been in there for 60K miles with 4.88s. I just now broke the origional u-joints and messed up the r&P but that was from abuse trying to recover a vehicle out of the deep snow. It now has Alloy USA shafts and u-joints in it. It survived just fine for a long time through wheeling like this though.

The D30 is far from a great axle but It can last if you know how to treat it and what to watch for.

It was for sale for a little bit because I was looking into a JK. Wife and I decided to quit our jobs and move across the country so I held on to it. ;)

carpekd 03-27-2008, 06:20 PM thanks for the wallpaper!
and that pattern looks acceptable to me
TJEli 03-28-2008, 06:29 AM Here are a couple more... And yes it did crawl right up that 6' waterfall at the end. With good tire placement and a good spotter, the run looks a lot harder than it is. ;)
