: desert racer - spooled, open, autolocked or limited slip diff?
the frog 03-23-2008, 02:26 AM what do the TT axles and the class 1 transaxles run?
i was under the impression that TTs are spooled and the buggies are open but now i hear all kinds of info about limited slip(70-80%)that make me wonder what the majority of the guys do.
pls help me know more....:)
65Chevy4x4 03-23-2008, 02:29 AM TT's and most solid axle guys are spooled, some run lockers but for simplicity run a spool. CL1's about 95% of the time run open but there are some loighter v6 guys that run lockers/limited slip diffs, but the majority do run a open rear or they'd be spending some cash on CV's and transaxles every race.
maxyedor 03-23-2008, 02:46 AM Most, if not all desert race trucks run a spool in the rear. Dirt is slippery enough that you can hardly tell the difference while driving around the pits between a spool and open diffs and being a large solid chunk of metal there isn't much to go wrong.
Like 65Chevy said, LS1+Spool+CV joint=BOOM!
the frog 03-23-2008, 03:12 AM as far as i know almost all the European and Japanese rally and rally raid cars(like those who run the Dakar race and the European Baja) run limited slips and i wonder why this is not the case in the American Baja cars.
sandking 03-23-2008, 09:12 AM I had a desert truck with limited slip, then swapped in a full spool, much better traction and control. IMHO.

I think like maxyedor and 65cheby said, most of those cars are IFS/IRS CV driven vehicles... alot of power+ lockers or a spool+ CVs=kaboom!
fj40forlife 03-23-2008, 03:42 PM for a soild axle i think ill run a spool. but if you have cv joints i would not want to run a spool or locker they would wear out alot of break from all the travel and power

There's a night and day difference between an LS1 powered class 1 and a rally car. The Dakar and rally cars have less than half the travel which puts far less strain on the CV. Rally cars have even less travel than a Dakar buggy, the Subaru rally cars that Patrana and Block run over here have maybe 8 or 9 inches of travel, I think the Touregs have 11" vs a Pennhall pulling 25".
Triaged 03-23-2008, 05:35 PM With an open diff you can run a turning brake which is standard in just about every buggy out there. Open diff's are also easier on the downstream parts (axles, cv's, etc...) and require less maintenance.
A clutch plate type limited slip would be just about useless. The clutches would burn up in a hurry. The only viable option is the helical gear limited slip which is what is in Albins transaxles.
Very few people run lockers.
demigod17 03-27-2008, 07:29 PM i run a limited slip in my swingaxle buggy
CanTheWhales 03-28-2008, 08:21 AM On a related note.... what about the front? Open or LSD? (Obviously not a spool or Auto-Locker) Just curious...

What differential?
Open works well. In a d44 it is hard to find a 4 pinion open diff so many run arb's purely for strength.
TotalImmortal 03-28-2008, 09:26 AM spools. you know how the car is going to react ALL the time. (rear)
