: A couple of ?'s
Mechanos 07-12-2002, 08:18 AM Rear springs: I'm using 2" Skyjackers. The eyes on both ends are identical but there is a spring clamp on one end but not the other. Should I put the clamped end on the shackle end of the spring or the frame mount end?
Beadlocks: I want to eventually use the weld on type of beadlock on the wheels I just got in. I ordered the wheels with 3" backspacing and in order to get that BS, they inverted the center section so that now the wide "safety" bead side is to the outside of the wheel. If I go to beadlocks, I guess I should then put the 'lock on the inside of the wheel on the narrow bead seat. Anyone see any problems with doing that?
Cliffy [JD] 07-12-2002, 08:28 AM Don't see any problems with it, but I do see a benefit. Beadlocks aren't street legal, If they can't see them what's the chances of them ticketing you for running them.
tsm1mt 07-12-2002, 08:44 AM If you put the beadlocks on the inside, will you be able to clear your calipers when you put the wheels on?
On the springs.. clamp forward, IIRC, according to Skyjacker.
Mostly you need to measure eye to center bolt. *THEY* want the short side forward (the center pin is offset 1/2"). On mine, IIRC, the clamped end was forward..
If you're building a custom suspension and you want more WB, then turn the springs around and gain that 1/2" of WB...
Old Scout 07-12-2002, 08:52 AM The last time this came up in Gen4x4 there has only been one guy that had received a ticket for bead locks. I'm not sure of the # of guys on POR running them, but I'm sure This is one of the largest BL groups on the web. With all the fake street loc ones out there, The cops just don't have time to check to see if there real. Most cops have no clue, but I'm sure if you drive like a ass in a place like Moab you will get popped.
I'm confident that the TR ones I bought won't make me a target for the red light in the rear view. And if I do , It's just a Fix ticket. it

Ahhh.... damn good point. I don't think I would be able to clear the caliper with the lock ring. Don't know what I was thinking there.
My 2" SJ's have a centered pin IIRC, I'll have to double check when I get home. I was wondering if it would be more advantageous to have the the springs fan out (vertically) on the shackle end or the frame mount end.
Scout Dude 07-12-2002, 09:06 AM Yep about the beadlocks...Show me which laws says their illegal...don't say because the're not DOT approved cause DOT only puts their recommendation on stuff..then the states make it a law..etc...also, mine have "DOT Approved" stamped into them still
:D
Oh...and as for fixing then reversed rim...Put the beadlock on the outside...if you are concerend about the inner bead being small now...stitch weld on it to build it up a bit...;)
TERRA-IZER 07-12-2002, 09:08 AM My rear 2" Skyjacker springs had clamps on both ends of the springs and the center pin is offset 1/2", i would run the clamp towards the front and leave it open in the rear, i ran mine with no bolts in the clamps for about 4 years and lost the 2 front ones, this year in Moab the bent a main leaf do to wheel hop, and i think if i would have left the front ones clamp it would have helped.
Hayraker 07-12-2002, 04:38 PM If you put the rings to the inside you can no longer tighten the bolts as easy, change a tire with the wheel still on the axle, notice broken bolts, etc. without pulling the wheel off.
Besides, you will lose the cool factor.

Moot point anyway.... the lock rings wouldn't clear the calipers. I could care less about the cool factor. I wouldn' t drop that kind of $$$ to look cool. I would be doing for functionallity. If I just wanted looks, I buy some cheap ass street locks....
The other points are valid tho.... harder to keep an eye on the things.
Mechanos 07-13-2002, 01:10 AM oh yeah... I forgot to mention. I double check the 2" rear Skyjacker springs again. On my set, the pin is centered. Even the paperwork says it doesn't matter which way you put them on because both sides are the same. Go figure. Oh well, I did take them off and turn them around so the clamp is on the front side of the springs.
