: what are the best axles?

I know I know... I guess it all depends on what you're gonna do with the truck, and what budget allows.... BUT...

I have a 75 bronco and am currently upgradign the drivetrain, and will soon be to the axles. I would like to go to full width axles, but I dont know what axles to use... I was thinking about getting some axles off a 76 or 77 f150, but I dont know.... should I go with D60's? or D44?
I guess bigger is always better, I suppose...
I will be using this rig as a 75% offroad vehicle, so wild is ok... it wil be a trail and rock vehicle mainly.... I apprecite input from fellow bronco owners as well as the others that would know anything on this topic...
Thanks fellas... Joe

Front: 78-79 Ford 1 ton Reverse Cut HP Dana 60 with kingpins

Rear: 35 spline dana70, 14 bolt, or 35 spline D60

How about front and rear 35 spline 9"s

joes75
07-12-2002, 04:45 PM
call me stupid... but you can put a 9" up front????

Also where does the 9" compare to the D60?
And why do many people go to the D60? because of the full float? or is that just some of them?

Billavista--- Someone told me to stay away from the 78 and 79 front axles... so these ARE up to the task?
Also what are kingpins?

Yeah, no...

I would agree with Billavista. Strong setup, and not too pricey...

joes75

yeah I was thinking about going 60's.. but can some one explain to me what kingpins are.. I assume there are kinds with and without them... what are the difference?

so I should go with the front D60 out of a 78 or 79 f150--- and a 35 spline rear 60.... will that be out of the same truck or will I have to scrounge?

7 days without BEEF makes one WEAK :rasta: :barf:

edit: is the conversion to drum brakes easy or is it fairly difficult ;)

what can I expect to pay for this brute of a front axle -D60 with kingpins???? seems expensive...

also what's the going rate on a rear D60 of comparable width? I'd figure a couple hundered...

as low as $300 to well the sky is the limit, ive seen one go for $1k real quick.

If you're not breaking your current 44 and 9", there is no reason you need to go bigger, unless you plan on drastically changing the trails you run and your driving style.. If you pop a 44 shaft every trip, then....it's probably time to upgrade.

Clear as mud?

joes75

well I need to swap gears, and make them stronger for the bigger tires... and was also thinking the extra width would help with stability on the trails. so I only want to build and buy one time... so I want to go for the BEEF. what's the point in risking to break axles on the 44 when I could go to the 60 for prolly not too much more..... I don tknow, I just want axles that I wont have to worry about.

Look for the 8 bolts at the end of the hub. ;)
Prices vary, I've paid the following:
RC Dana 60 front (complete) 1000.00
RC Dana 60 front (center and tubes) 260.00
RC Dana 60 front (missing 1 side) 200.00
FF dana 60 rear (complete) 140.00
I'd have to go with BillaVista on this one.

RC = Reverse cut (high pinion)
FF = Full Floater

Don't forget, unless you go with Mog or other portal axle, all 1-ton axles will really hurt your ground clearance. So go at least 38's- otherwise you don't need beef anyway

joes75
07-12-2002, 08:43 PM
thanks guys for letting me know what that meant.. although I should have been able to figure that out for myself.....

And I do plan to run larger tires slagburn... at least 38's...

Pat, Gremilon (spell check) has got some wild shit going on with hummer portals. His new 2-up inline buggy uses them. It's very light. I drove it at ttc and was real impressed!
joes75, I know these axles aren't for you , I thought just to mentoin them.

What size tire are you going to end up with?
297 D44 fronts are good to 36" with out to much trouble.

prolly go with 38.5x14 sx's... or maybe- I might be dreaming- 39.5x18 boggers... although there wouldnt be much left of the bronco body after that... even with the lift it'll have....
Those boggers are just plain sexy:D :D kidding

Daniel, I thought Pat's was all stock stuff, don't hummers use d44 centers?
He just had narrower shafts and built his own A arms. The suspension was jacked up high so that there wasn't much down travel, thus articulation The thing still worked good, wheels in the air and all.

joes75, The rear 9" can be built as strong as you want, but it might be cheaper to get a 35sp 60. The front 44 with Warn shafts and CTMs would be great for 38.5s or up to 40" if you are not an animal.

I think the best bang for your buck is to get 60s out a one ton ford and use them full width. If you use hummer rims, it puts the overall width about the same as an EB. :)

they are amc 20 centers...

what you are remembering is that the '78/'79 coil sprung D-44 is junk. they have a thin walled axle tube and CAST on wedges for the radius arms. not good.
The '78/'79 D-60 from ford is the best for a stock 1-ton front end.

ok, im sorry to do this to you pal but reading your posts i am completely under the impression that you are in NO WAY ready to swap axles. no offence, but you need a good bit of understanding og how things work, like caster, pinion angle, suspension geometry (coil front of the bronco), etc. IMO, i think that you will be much happier, and so will your wallet, if you upgrade the 9" rear to 35 spline and put Warn axleshafts in the D44 front along with some CTM ujoints. all bolt in, and you wont break it, guaranteed.

but if you really want to swap axles, then read up first, know the terminology, and most of all, make sure you know how to weld. GOOD.

good luck.

thanks 9V... that's exactly what I'm trying to do.... Read up and try to get as much knowledge about it as possible. bye the time I am ready to do the swap all should be well..

A few people have told me that the full widths off the 78 and 79 that we've been talking about will fit without any mods, but you'd want to have extended radius arms... any thoughts guys?
