Hello, im looking to buy a 4x4 that I can take the family on trips. There are 5 of us.While not looking to rock crawl,I inevitably end up pushing the limit.I was leaning towards a early 4 runner with 22r or a land cruiser. This will not be dd.any ideas or thoughts on the most capable rig for the money.Reliability, ease of repair, and price to setup.I wish i had the money to buy princess.Thx m.m.

Get an FJ80....
Third row seats, lots of good upgrades available, good drivetrain w/coils.
Depending on how picky you are, you can find a good builder with high mileage for a fair price.

older jeep cherokes. factory dana 44s so 36s would be fine and from 75-91 they are the same so parts are easy to find. should be around 1000 and up great deal

FJ-80 would be my first choice. You can probably find a Grand Cherokee cheaper though.

FJ-80 or a pre 86 4Runner would be your best choices, both solid axle, but the 80 has a better suspension setup.
I would have gotten the FJ-80 instead of my runner but cost was a big issue and I didn't want to spend 6k on a beater.

Not sure how old the kids are but I own a 1st gen runner and the back seat is pretty cramped. I wouldn't want to be back there on a long trip.
I second the Land Cruiser but think you could get away with an FJ-55, FJ-60/62, or an FJ-80. The third row seating available in the FJ-80 would be nice but all of those models have more interior room than the 4Runner and that is gonna be crucial with 3 people in the back.
If you do decide on a 4Runner, then look at the second gen at least. More room in the back.

As stated, a Cherokee or a 4 runner is going to be mighty cramped with 5 people, kids or not. I would look into a Grand Wagoneer or a Land Cruiser...
