: Split case removal

I finally got my donor vehicle and am going to be removing the split case, 1987 FJ60. The final destination is behind the SM420 in the FJ40 (thats right, I like my cruza axles)

However, I seemed to have lost my manual. I removed my split case years ago when I re-worked by FJ62 but can't recollect exactly.

The obvious is the removal of the output shaft nut, and visible mounting bolts. It appears you have to "split" the case to remove some mounting bolts. I just looked at it quick like, so don't flame me.

So if there are any removal secrets or tricks please do tell....

I haven't actually done the teardown yet, but I have read the FSM and gathered all the necessary tools and OEM seals & gaskets to do a R&R on my t-case, I hope to start in the next few days.

Here's the major points, from the FSM:

Remove the shift levers
Remove speedo drive gear
Remove cover, unstake the input shaft nut, back it off (36mm socket)
Remove F&R output flanges (32mm socket)
Remove bearing retainer for rear output shaft
Remove lock plate for idler shaft
Split the case
Pull the guts out (might require pullers)
Unbolt front of case from back of tranny

My thought is to try to source the bearings from a local bearing house, thinking I can get similar to OEM quality without paying dealer prices.

Yes Kman you have to split the case. I wouldn't expect to need a puller for the gears, should be an easy job for a strong guy like you. Hardest part is getting under that lowrider to do it, wait, what am I saying, you have a lift.................

I went wheeling this weekend and broke something inside the driver knuckle. Didn't repair since it was late afternoon today, but it feels and sounded like birf. Not just any birf a Longfield! Dead giveaway was not being able to turn to the right when I was unloading it from the trailer at home.

I'll yank it apart after work tomorrow, but I'm guessing turning the sterring stops in all the way wasn't a good move.
