Had a great weekend of wheelin' Drove three 5+ trails and a 4 and didn't break once.

Sweet pics! I especially like the Jeepster, you don't see enough of those out on the trails. It definitely looks like TSL SXs were the tire of choice out there too.

The axles under the rig were built by Sun Ray. Actually most of the Jeep was built by Sun Ray. Defiantly one of those pays to play guys.

Yep, SunRay built it. That guy must have $100K into his TJ. The axle joint was a full float 31 spline axle that was drilled and tapped at the outer end. Then they slipped a splined yoke onto the axle and bolted it together. (you can see the bolt head in the pic) I didn't ask why they did it but I'm assuming that it was so they wouldn't have to turn down a 60 axle shaft, re-spline it and have it hardened again. The part I didn't understand about the truck was the stretch job. The owner told me they stretched the cowl instead of the tub to get more weight over the front axle. Then in the next sentence he told me that the motor was moved back 5 inches. He about had enough room under the hood to have two inline 6's in there. The only thing I can figure is that they wanted to use a stock soft top instead of a custom built one. The owner was really cool and wasn't afraid to Get-It-Awn.

Ok Sun Ray.... but whats the skinny on those inner shafts??? It looks as if they took a pinion yoke then used a sraight splined on both ends inner shaft then bolted the yoke to the shaft. Looks key for quick UJ changing but are the U-bolts as strong as the factory ears??

what is the story about why they were built that way. seems like they would break. or am i more confused than usuall <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">

i have talked to tom elliston (sunray) about those yokes and he said they are 14bolt yokes. they use them because they are a bit stronger than the standard axle yoke and easily replaced if you break a joint and it takes out the yoke. anyway i know those guys. that is richard and steve strella. richard owns the jeep and steve (his son) is a guy i wheel with alot. both are really cool guys. i got to see that jeep being built at sunray and it is bad!!!! steve has a jeep with sunray axles in it too but it isn't quite the jeep that his dads is. i never have been told a price but i bet he lost some bank on that thing. thats ok from what i hear richard has it to loose. and you are right he isn't afraid to get it!

by the way the jeeps spec's.
lt1, 4l60e, dodge np208, hybrid 35spline d60/9" front, 35 spline 9" rear, coilovers, 39.5 tsls, the body and frame have been lengthened 10" for a 104" wheelbase.

It was nice meeting you on Saturday. I was the lucky one who got to help put Travis's belt back on. Your jeep did great on that trail. Really impressive.

Yeah Hangman defiantly kicked ass. That trail was sweet. After you left I took some stupid line on the last out and donated a bunch of orange paint to the rocks.

The next day we ran T-back. We finished early so I went over and ran Mt. Charmin. Damn near made it with out needing the winch. Just tigthened the cable and it came up the spot in the middle. Damn close. Anyway that obstacle was a blast.

Excpet for not getting to run section 4 of Hal Johns the weekend was great. Couldn't have asked for better weather. The traction was so sweet.

Cool meeting you. To bad I didn't get a look at that Willy's of yours. I think I am going to try and make a run back out your way next spring. Unless I head to Montrose again.

Thanks for the compliment on the rig. I think with that sixty up front finally it is really starting to work like it should. With out spitting parts every where.

I was wondering if you had any info on the Jeepster? Also, could I get your permission to possibly use your photo of it in the <a href="http://home.off-road.com/~nobucks/calendar.html">American Jeepster Club's 2002 calendar</a>?

This is how they do a 31 spline inner to 35 spline outer on the D60/9" hybrid at Sunray.

They have been doing thes much longer than they have been doing the 35/35 like I have. They report that this is a SUPER strong setup, however, when I priced it all out, the 35/35 cost the same.

They keep this option open if a buyer insists on an ARB for the 9" section since ARB does not make a 35 spline locker.

That TJ is bad ass. I think that is a great place to stretch the frame. When I do mine one day, that is where mine will get the extra length.

I was going to go up to the campground that night, but when I got out of the trail I couldn't get my rear axle to go into high range. I had to drive home in front wheel drive. Really sucks. I hope to have mine ready to do some really cool stuff in a couple of weeks.

That 60 worked great. Did you get in trouble for scratching that fancy paint job? Guess it's time for some bondo like that TJ.

That is not a 14-bolt yoke! A 14-bolt uses straps NOT u-bolts, and besides a 14-bolt yoke uses a 1350 U-joint, a Dana 60 shaft takes like a 1480 series UJ!! And if I remember correctly the older 14 bolt pinions are coarse spline, maybe the newer ones are fine and would work?

By the way the guy wondering about the Commando. Tim Drake owns it. He is out of Mitchell, SD. He is one of the Black Hills 4 Wheelers. That rig is really sweet. The mags shot a feature on it while they were out there last weekend.

Thanks, that's who I figured it belonged to. Don't know if he still has his Cherokee, but that was a pretty cool truck too.

you could be right abot the yoke because now that you mention it i have a 14bolt and i have heard they don't make a u-joint style yoke for it. anyway it has been over a year ago since i talked to him but i know he said it was either the yoke or the shaft from a 14bolt rear they use to build those shafts. i guess it was the shafts them selfs and they cut the flanges off. yeah now that i think about it, that is what he said it was...i think.
