: sooo...How much Horsepower does your engine have?
Tankota 09-06-2001, 12:16 PM Just curious if most people are using huge built engines these days or...
are people using slightly built engines which last longer (normally) and putting more of their money into the drivetrain.
I personally have seen a shift away from friggin huge hp engines and more into larger and stronger diffs and axles etc.
coloradok5 09-06-2001, 12:43 PM Right now my 350 is in the range of 350 ponies which is not enough for the street or top truck or anything like that but works great on the trail. I have been putting my money in axles/lockers etc.. This winter I want to do new custom springs and duel t-cases, hydro assist steering maybe custom cage if I can squeeze out some more time some where. The engine works OK so I would rather get the rest of the suspension and drivetrain hooked up, If I can't make it up something USUALLY another 200hp wouldn't help anyway.
wngrog 09-06-2001, 12:49 PM 135 hp, however a watch motor would run my truck with the gears I have!
Moab Austin 09-06-2001, 12:49 PM my ol 258 in my daily driver till I finish my heep has about 50 horse, leaks water everywhere, generally runs like shiite.
but it'll do.
acctually, when I get done I will have a stock injected V8 and it will be plenty!
(Its great when the farthest local trail is 6 miles!
We desktopdyno'd my 408 at 340HP. Should be considerably higher with the cam & compression I have, but the 600 carb, stock heads, & 1 5/8" headers hold it back. With the right top end, I'd be in the neighborhood of 490HP. Being a competition mud racer, HP is important to me, but I do like to stick with hydraulic cams (mine's 234/244 .488/.510) for ease of maintenance.

NoBrainR 09-06-2001, 12:56 PM Depends on the octane of the peanuts I feed the squirrel . I have a short box GM with 350 running maybe 400. But I perfer to drive the toy with 4 cyl. I can go the same places on about a quarter of the gas. And do it with finese instead of brute force.
I would guess my well used 150k mile 22RE is pushing 95 hp on a good day...

Lloyd 09-06-2001, 01:39 PM Beats me. 383, 10:1, Isky 292/505, Qjet on Edelbrock. Anybody wanna guess? How about someone with desktop dyno punching it in? I could use suggestions for new heads while you're at it.
72F100 09-06-2001, 01:41 PM My engine was originally rated at 315HP but I've put on duals and re-curved the distrib.(which helped gobs) so I'd have to guess around 330-340HP conservitively. More imprtanly though is the stock 427lb/ft of torque which is probably up to 435 or so. Even w/ 3.50 gears and 35's it still feels strong on the street and I've never felt inadiquate power on trails either. A gear swap is definately in the cards though.
Right about 4 squirrel power, stock 22re Toyota motor.
skinny 09-06-2001, 01:48 PM maybe 275-300, wait a minute who am i kidding, i have a trolling motor on it

You have squirrel power? I think I have chipmunk power with my zuk. Stock engine pushing about 60 HP.
Mike Knorr 09-06-2001, 01:54 PM Stock TPI 305 with a few goodies. Maybe at best 250 it was factory rated at 230 before opening up the exhuast. Nothing fancy but it works on the trail.

Must've built it okay since it hasn't died after the dunking....lol

have you made any progress on this vehicle sense joining POR? it seems like its always been sitting with the tub and engine in thats about it... Ok I guess you got the swampers on
NE-RokToy 09-06-2001, 03:34 PM I'm probably pushing 150 or so, thats with a 4.3 factory rated at 175 I beleive. I'm just hoping torque is over 200 to justify replacing my toyota motor with this thing. Also any one know if a 4.3 can handle a 75hp nitrous shot I'm betting it can

Medusa 09-06-2001, 03:38 PM My GEN II, 5.7L Vortec engines put out about 250 HP and 330 ft.lbs of torque. With good gears, I think that is a very nice combination.

right now I'm doing the steering, gauges, and wiring. next is a new floor. It's into the "need more money" stage I spend about $100 a month on it, and when the pile gets big, I start puttin sh!t on. the tub is about to come off too and have a new floor put in.
Colorunner 09-06-2001, 04:13 PM Engine 1: 78 K20 454, completely built up with roller rockers, teflon coated pistons...500+
Engine 2: 88 yota 3.0 v6 probably in the area of 150.
Dirty Harry 09-06-2001, 04:14 PM The stock Toyota 22RTE motors make 145 hp and 180 ft.lbs. of torque, but mine was wheezing and using oil and coolant, so it is getting rebuilt. With the new injectors, cam, and turbo I hope to have over 200 hp and still have it be reliable. All in a nice light, compact package.
JIM3030 09-06-2001, 04:31 PM about 160 hp I think, stock 258. that is enough to tare the clutch plate out in the gate keeper. only 73.5 to 1 crawl. it was all bond up and I hit the key without putting the clutch in. that tore it up would not release anymore
pcorssmit 09-06-2001, 04:33 PM I'd be really happy if my 350 was making 225 hp (@ sea level). Doesn't really matter with how bad my tranny is fried, though, I can't get much to the ground.
The daily driver/tow vehicle is in the 350 hp/800 ft lb range, though.

wheelinjp 09-06-2001, 07:49 PM Well with the 468cu in chev and the roller 680lift cam it idles a little rough but the dual predators on top the 8-71 are tough to keep cool until I hit the 250hp nitrous injected kit so a good guesstimate would be about 200hp on the worn 350.I would like more though!!!!
Toy 4Runner Man 09-06-2001, 09:08 PM I beleive mine is around 145, but I have seen others advertise 185hp with what I have.

BnTMike 09-07-2001, 09:11 AM My old BB Ford was only about 325 hp and around 475 lbs of torque.. the new one will be a 548 inch full roller, long rod with about 515 hp and 625 lbs of torque. Add a 150 shot and yee haa.... In the snow you need low rpm and when the snow is good you can use all the power you can find..

250 eh Hooder? Did the guy tell you how fast you have to spin it to get that? My SVO 2.3L is rated at 200HP from the factory at something like 4200 RPM. I'm not knocking your swap or anything, just wondering what you got there. I haven't got mine running yet either but I'm getting closer. Here's a more recent pic with the steering and the winch in place.

I'm SOOO glad my motor's not stuffed in like yours are you going to run a raised cowl hood?
The guy that ported and polished my heads didn't say at what RPMs I'll be making my ponies at, but he did say that naturally asperated, with all the work done to my motor (I had MAJOR head work done on that sucker:grinpimp it would push between 185-200 hp, but since my turbo pushes 7lbs, that I should expect to go over the 250hp mark.
I also talked to Ak Miller, who designed and built the turbo kit that I'm using, and he said that in like 1970-71 they were putting that kit on basically stock pintos and reaching 125mph in the 1/4 mile . He didn't have any hp/torque specs though So, I definatly plan on taking it to the dyno once she's done.

It'll lug at idle, or flash to 5500rpm as the conditions warrant.
My lighter Scout likes race fuel, currently weighs about 2/3 as much, and makes more like 350hp/405lbs-ft.. from a "warmed over" 'Binder 304. Oh yeah, it doesn't like to idle below 1000rpm. NOS maybe next year..
440-fide Ramcharger 09-07-2001, 10:45 AM Realistically probably around 300 hp. Plenty of torque, though. Motor is built for grunt.

Chevy. Noticed my 700R4 was leaking pulling into the Hollister Hill ranger station. Unloaded my Toy at the upper ranch and wheeled it all day. Driving home on 25 my translocked up--pulled over and the case was cracked in half. Replaced the 700R4 with a Turbo 400 went to hit the starter and the motor turned over 1 revolution before stopping. Thought the starter went out so I put on the spare still nothing. Tried to turn the motor by the flywheel and it would only turn in one direction. Pulled the pan and I had thrown a rod. This was on an old RHS Magnumum Special B&M Blower motor with all the goodies...

Yeah, its going to be a bit tight under the hood. Hardest part will be finding a place to put the battery. It may have to go somewhere else. I want to leave the hood flat so I can still fold down my windsheild. My plan was to have the intercooler welded up and convert it to air to water, then plumb it to a small radiator in front of the main radiator.

185-200 HP normally aspirated out of only 120 cubes? The only way I see that happening would be by either reving the snot out of it or running something like 14:1 compression and 109 octane all the time. Mine runs 14-17 psi of boost to get 200 HP.

You talked to the AK Miller?? Cool! He would certainly know more than me. I can believe that about the pintos though. They don't weigh much. I know of one guy who swapped an SVO engine like mine into one and was running consistant 12s. He still had the stock 3.00 gears and P185/75R13 tires. When you get that thing on a dyno, be sure to post the results, I would be very curious to see the results.
