: Does Clocking T-case change driveshaft length?

I was wondering when you clock a transfer case(Dana 300), will it lengthen or shorten the driveshafts? It should in theory, but i am hoping to get more length out of my rear shaft. Im not sure whether it matters, but it is a 258/T-18/Dana 300 connected to a currie 9 inch rear and dana 30 front. Right now the Rear driveshaft is not long enough to reach the rear axle because it was built for a AMC 20, and i am trying to avoid sending it back to tom woods. Will this also mess up the front driveshaft length/angle? It is a stock shaft that currently fits just fine.

thanks for the help! :smokin:

if you clock it up, yes you would need to lengthen your drive shaft. BUT it will also steepen the u joint angles. this might not be an option, but you could always clock it down. that would lessen the u joint angles and you would be able to run your drive shaft the way it is. and give up major ground clearance to boot.

Clocking the t-case won't change the rear driveshaft length or angle. The rear output is in the center of the clocking "circle" Front would probably need to be slightly longer. Depends on how far you clock it. If you don't have a body lift you won't be able to clock it a ton. It hit's the floor. Mine is clocked tight to the pan on my no body lift cj and it sticks about 2.5" below the frame rails.

Clocking will not change your rear Driveshaft length or your rear driveshaft angle.

PizzaFarno, are you SOA? i wonder just how bad my u joint angles are going to be when my 9" goes in.

im still SUA sorry. But if it makes any difference, my u-joint angles are pretty radical with this 9". Thats with 5.5 inches of lift.

a xj front cv shaft and yoke is a great option if the measurements are what you need

a 1310 single cardan joint will flex more than a cv, the cv is just to kill vibes when there is a decent driveshaft angle at highway speeds.

How does the clocking of the Dana 300 affect twin sticks? Have a 'glass tub, and a 1" body lift. Looking to get as much ground clearance as possible.

i read this thread before i clocked mine about 2 weeks ago, thinking it would not shorten my rear driveshaft length. Thats wrong. It does. i have the jbconversions kit and i think thats where the info got lost in the translation. Simply the act of clocking your x-case will not change your driveshaft length, I agree on that. However, installing a clocking kit such as jbconversions that replaces the stock bearing retainer with a thicker new one, will shorten your rear driveshaft length. And rotating it up will effect both length and angle of your front driveshaft. So in some cases rear d-shaft length will need to be addressed.

correct on the jb conversions clocking ring, it will shorten you rear shaft length, but not by more the 3/4". the regular clocking rings made by go2guy and others are typically only 3/8" thick. either number is not enough to help or hurt you if your driveshafts are built with enough slip. if 3/4" additional compression or slip is goin to destroy your shaft then you should have crunched the numbers better to allow a longer slip. get the driveshaft lengthened now and save yourself the headaches later. do it right the first time or it will bite you in the ass later.
