yota_kid 03-30-2008, 05:11 PM well thank you for the link, and the info, your help was much appreciated
Mossyrocks 03-30-2008, 06:59 PM On one hand its awesome. On the other it sucks because I dont want less tacomas on the road. That'd suck for them to be hard to find in 10 years.
TachedOutOffRoad 03-31-2008, 06:22 AM That nucking futs  over 800,000 trucks
Will they go to the scrap yard, junk yard w/o titles, third world countries, or what???
I stoped hoarding mini-truck parts, looks like it will be Taco parts now. My wife will be so pleased :mr-t:
jtaco1 03-31-2008, 07:17 AM They are going to the crusher, just got done with mine last week :( Luckily I was building a 1st gen 4 Runner to wheel.

I think thats bullshit. Theres no way Id take mine in.
I bet all this is just to make it hard to find older tacomas so people will buy the new junk.
thepinktaco 04-01-2008, 03:39 AM I think thats bullshit. Theres no way Id take mine in.
I bet all this is just to make it hard to find older tacomas so people will buy the new junk. You wouldnt take 14k for a truck worth 1000 with a rotted frame?
Lil'John 04-01-2008, 05:09 AM Damn... fawked by California again:flipoff2::shaking::flipoff2:

I couldn't pass it up, I needed more room for the family and was building a dedicated trail rig, so the new 4 Runner will work as a tow rig as well. Driving a Tacoma on 35 and lots of armor everyday was starting to take a toll on teh back and wallet with the cost of fuel.
This only effects a few out of the masses, so there will still be plenty of Tacomas for parts in the upcoming years.

Wow, I recall hearing this but I didn't know it affected this many trucks, damn! You would have thought they learned from the pre 89 rust issues on toyotas?!
01rocktaco 04-01-2008, 07:13 AM We have 4 tacomas in our family first off. About 2 months ago, Roseville Toyota wanted 10 Tacomas for an inspection (only 95.5 - 2000 models). So my bro took his in. Turns out everything was fine. I think they were trying to see just how many of these frames were rotting. They were giving away 100 bucks and a free oil change to everyone thatbrought theres in. Seems to me like they fixed the problem in 2001.
locotaco85 04-01-2008, 07:18 AM On one hand its awesome. On the other it sucks because I dont want less tacomas on the road. That'd suck for them to be hard to find in 10 years.
Since it's an extended warranty, not a recall, it's only affecting trucks with serious frame perforation. I dunno about you, but seeing what some of the frames look like now, I shudder to think what they'll be looking like a decade from now, and I damn sure wouldn't want to buy one. Some of that shit is downright scary. There's a long, long thread on TTORA about it with some good pictures.
Hopefully they're not going to do something dumb like destroy the complete truck, just cuz of the frame.
lilbuddy 04-01-2008, 08:21 AM Thats pretty crazy. 813,000 vehicles is a lot. Hopefully my tuck is good. Im going to go look at it and make sure now.
thepinktaco 04-01-2008, 06:52 PM We have 6 at work right now. These are the ones I obviously failed, figured I show why they are actually doing this.
The last pic is the graveyard for the dealer ship in the town where I live, they have about 50.

That's just sickening. It would be so awesome if they'd allow SOMEBODY to pull the drivetrains out of those things, whether it be the owners or dealerships or whomever. Pretty sad to see so many other good parts go to waste.
misterfubar 04-01-2008, 07:23 PM I should try to find a cheep Taco before everyone hears about this.
locotaco85 04-01-2008, 07:24 PM Pinktaco, if you could find me a late 3RZ with low miles in there, i could probably scare up a few cases of beer. :smokin:
I should try to find a cheep Taco before everyone hears about this.
That was my first thought too. Unfortunately, for those not purchased/registered before they announced this earlier this month, they'll pay back the purchase price only. The truck has to be registered before then, or bought and couldn't be registered/failed inspection because of the frame rust.
"No, really, I want you to put $12,000 on the bill of sale..."
thepinktaco 04-02-2008, 03:46 AM I see people trying to get trucks on craigslist not knowing they wont get shit for them.

seriously. thats fucked. i want to dump my 3.0 for a 3.4. how can they just trash all of those....
RockToy94 04-02-2008, 12:56 PM Shit I just sold my Tacoma with a bad frame for 3200.00. {Kicking self in the ass} Is everyone getting 150% 0f high book or is that just a myth?
Qlueless 04-02-2008, 08:57 PM Shit I just sold my Tacoma with a bad frame for 3200.00. {Kicking self in the ass} Is everyone getting 150% 0f high book or is that just a myth?
I would contact the person you sold it to, and I would also be talking with the dealership...
Depending on how long ago it was, and if they have not retitled the truck yet.. it is still tecicly yours (file for a lost title to get rid of any hand writting) becuase if you sold the truck to them in the past 30 days... they will NOT qualify for the warenty anyway... or at least thats how I read it.. Give them $4000+ to get the truck back...and cash in
Qlueless 04-02-2008, 09:03 PM Need to find someone local with a "bad frame" swap my 2wd manual tranny for there 4wd manual tranny and t-case.. make a crappy drive shaft...and drive it on in..
:D:D:D:D
AttemptingTJ 04-06-2008, 08:56 AM I think they are buying it back in "excellent" condition.
DrVic723 04-06-2008, 09:41 AM Got my recall letter in the mail on Friday... I wonder if they would give my 14K for mine?
toyin 04-06-2008, 10:04 AM Looks like i'm gonna need to look at my tacoma when i get home. I really don't think it's going to have and issue but i'll let you guys know next week.
1stgenxxx 04-16-2008, 06:18 AM I got my recall thing in the mail the other day...too bad my truck has a salvage title or I would pack the frame full of calcium
Serious One 04-16-2008, 06:31 AM Man with all that frame rot I thought I was looking at photos of old Land Rovers.
Tacoma guys have my sympathy now.
ROCKTACO 04-16-2008, 07:34 AM Anybody have any idea how Toyota is handeling this for those of us who have made modifications to the frame? Like SAS, sliders, or simply cutting some of the ass end off.
VsToy 04-18-2008, 12:07 PM I just called my local dealership and they told me this was NOT TRUE, but some of you have already cashed your trucks in. Correct? Please advise more on the process.
jtaco1 04-18-2008, 12:21 PM What isn't true, that they are buying trucks back. That is true, I did it with mine. They cannot be bought back , they will be crushed.

I'm pretty sure us SAS guys who have modified the frame are pretty much screwed. I live in a really dry climate, and have not seen this kind of rust. I can't see them liking my shortened wheelbase/sased rig. :) I couldn't bear to see it crushed. I'd rather put a new frame under it.

Pretty much the way I feel about mine. I have not seen any issues for anyone that lives in a state that don't use salt. Toyota states this is pretty much limited to those states that do. Thank god:).
thepinktaco 04-19-2008, 03:46 AM So far I have failed 40 at work with only about 7 passing, one which was my truck. When I was talking with the Toyota Rep yesterday he was wondering if I had brought in my truck for the inspection. Then he was telling the guy that was some engineer from Japan that was here checking them all out how my truck was Sased with a Land Cruiser axle. I also told the guy I had an FJ40 with a frame that looks much like the Tacomas and I wondered if they would buy it back.
thelbz 04-21-2008, 03:28 PM Just got rid of my taco today, dealership gave me 16000 i didnt even pay that much for it!!! Gotta pick up my 08 tomorrow hope i like the 6 speed, they didnt have any on the lot with one to test drive.

Let me know if you here anything, not that I need it but would like to have it Just in case someday I do. Of course it wouldn't even be plausible unless they let me strip the parts before turning it in.
AttemptingTJ 07-05-2008, 07:36 AM So who else has done this, now that everyone in the world knows about it.
I had mine inspected and it passed.
But the guy just winked at me and said that he knows that VT winters are hard on a truck haha.
The word is, at least the place I went to, he said that I could bring it back once every month if I wanted to get it checked out.
85andstillrunnin 07-05-2008, 09:05 AM They are buying them back in Ohio for book value in execellent condition. They allowed my friend to strip off everything he wanted before turning it in. The truck just had to be driven to the dealership. The dealer didn't care what it looked like once it got there, just as long as he could drive it. He took off his lift, wheels, tires, radio, cold air intake, and ARB front bumper before retuning it. He would have been able to keep the truck if he wanted but, would have to sign a waiver releasing Toyota from all liability.
yota_kid 07-06-2008, 06:09 PM So, we took ours in, and they didnt bat an eye at takin it back in. Dad got a call form toyota, all we have to do is take it to the dealer, hand them the title, they hand us a check :D.
TNToy 07-06-2008, 07:06 PM ...I live in a really dry climate, and have not seen this kind of rust...
You probably never will.
We haven't failed one yet here in Memphis that I know of. I work at the largest dealership, and there are only two others in the city. I've only done 4 of these inspections so far. They've all been fine.
But at the last class I took from Toyota, we had techs down from northern Kentucky, which isn't all that far north. But it's far enough that they salt the roads. Several hundred had been bought back up there. One of the guys knew of a customer who'd bought one for $1,200 just before the recall was announced. They gave him 10 times that for the truck. :smokin:
ryan_m 07-06-2008, 07:31 PM I need some rust on my frame. I wish cali had salty roads. I guess its time for some salt water baths.
og_karnage 07-06-2008, 10:50 PM go spend some time in Pismo... my fresh build turned to crap after a couple cruizes through the water.
I just wish I could get a new frame and start fresh with a frame off rebuild. its been chopped, buggered, chopped and plated, with covered boogers. Its the one thing that keeps me wanting to swap everything to a buggy. but I like AC in the hot desert too much to scrap the comfy cab.
yota_kid 07-07-2008, 05:49 AM I just called my local dealership and they told me this was NOT TRUE, but some of you have already cashed your trucks in. Correct? Please advise more on the process.
From the way I understood it, it depended on the dealership, and if they were willing to deal with it :shaking:. Try taking it to another dealership, you may have more luck that way.
2000yota 07-07-2008, 12:21 PM Do you have to take your tacoma into the dealer and they will decide if it is good or bad?
Cause i got some good buds at a 4 wheel drive shop and they said it was good to go......
yota_kid 07-07-2008, 04:24 PM Yes you have to take it to the dealer, they will have the deciding word on whether Toyota will take it back or not.
TNToy 07-07-2008, 08:28 PM Crawl under the truck yourself. Look for rust. Especially in the areas where it's shown badly above, near the rear spring hangers. How it look?
If you have zero (or light, superficial rust) they'll keep it for a couple of hours and then tell you it's fine.
If you look under there and wonder how the damn thing hasn't snapped in two, then you're a good cantidate for a check with 'TOYOTA' written on it.
2000yota 07-07-2008, 09:37 PM alright thanks guys

Also check around ALL the crossmembers, seems to be a hot spot, at least on ours. It starts around the t-case member and goes back, almost to the gas tank :barf:

Has this been verified? I had mine inspected and it passed as well, but since my bed is rotted pretty bad I was thinking about "accellerating" the aging process and bringing it back...god knows I overpayed for the thing, I might as well try to sell it back for a profit

just checked with a dealer....you can have it re-inspected annually
hman1991 07-17-2008, 06:38 PM i was at a yard today and they were loading the tacomas to head to scrap yard. cannot believe no parts can be removed except the gastank and cats. tires were slashed and crushed down the cab with a frontend loader ( wachem them do it to a mint trd ex cab. there were 25 of them there and i asked the driver if there had been alot more and he said he has already loaded 150. there was a trd that i could see the elocker in it still. makes me sad. wonder how many superchargers, lockers and other cool parts r going threw the shreder.

From what I have seen up here in the Mass is the 01+ are going to have the same problems. There are a few that are about rotted that come into work. We have had 2 tundras and a sequoia with rotted frames too.
Erick561 07-24-2008, 08:42 PM driving conditions in new england are horrible for steel. i cringe thinking about all those tacos being crushed with all those parts that could be salvaged. thats not economic at all. i just lost some respect for toyotas
I would pull the rear third if it was a elocker then bolt the axles back in and drive it in in 4wd..
Performance_Image 08-01-2008, 09:48 AM I have an 2001 with a hole in the frame Toyota corp is playing games with me I think. every body thinks it great that the are gitting a healthy some of cash.they offered me 12k thats 6k less than the 150% they claim in the recall/buyback

This is the first I've heard of 150%....
TachedOutOffRoad 08-01-2008, 10:42 AM i just lost some respect for toyotas
 Its economics. Its cheaper to crush them than to pay out on lawsuits where some guy and his kids die because of a rotten frame. They cant risk those rotten trucks being on the street that were "supposed to be parted out" and Toyota isnt int he used parts business. Its easier and safer to smash them all. Id love to pick up a spare parts truck or two, but its the smartest move for them.
Performance_Image 08-01-2008, 12:49 PM what they are doing is giving 150% of the k.b.b. high retail value. say a tacoma value is 9500.00 they 9500.00 x 1.5 14250.00 this is what the tacoma owner would get a chk. for
MoTo MeTaL 01-21-2010, 06:18 PM thats fucking crazy ill never bring my taco in... because i know my frame on truck is
is fine..
4x4orbust 01-21-2010, 06:53 PM thread is 2 years, 6 mo's old. not all were recalled. my 97 was
SandInMyTaco 02-07-2010, 04:59 PM idk if this is still in affect but if it is where would I go to do the recall? thanks in advance.
CDF94toy 02-07-2010, 06:00 PM i dont know how there doing it where you are from but i had my frame replaced on my 01 taco, just bring it to a dealer for a frame inspection per recall and they will either undercoat it with some sort of sealer or replace the frame completely new rear leafs lower controll arms brake lines e-brake cables nut n blts etc. 2000 and older were bought back 01 and newer are frame replacements, they had mine done in three days. skimped on replacing small clips that hold gap gaurds on and whatnot but everything else seems good
Qlueless 05-21-2010, 02:16 PM Well I took my 96 2wd Taco in when the recall first started, and it passed.. even though I had just welded the upper a-arm bracket back on the frame :mad3:
Well I looked under the truck a few days ago, and the frame looked thin.. smacked it with a hammer, and it went right though...It's crazy how fast the frame rusted out.. but then again, I stopped washing the salt off of the frame during the winter months
Well I took it to the dealership, and 2 minutes later they came back and said it failed.. and Toyota Corp will be calling me in the next few days..
Great news for me since I have to lose my 2005 daily driver.. from lack of employment.. but now toyota will be giving me around $5000 for a truck thats now worth $1200 to me :D I will be upgrading to a 4wd ex-cab, double cab, or a 4runner.. with no money out of pocket :smokin:
I can't complain.. if they give me the amount that I think they will offer.
