On one hand its awesome. On the other it sucks because I dont want less tacomas on the road. That'd suck for them to be hard to find in 10 years.

That nucking futs  over 800,000 trucks

Will they go to the scrap yard, junk yard w/o titles, third world countries, or what???

I stoped hoarding mini-truck parts, looks like it will be Taco parts now. My wife will be so pleased :mr-t:

I bet all this is just to make it hard to find older tacomas so people will buy the new junk.

I couldn't pass it up, I needed more room for the family and was building a dedicated trail rig, so the new 4 Runner will work as a tow rig as well. Driving a Tacoma on 35 and lots of armor everyday was starting to take a toll on teh back and wallet with the cost of fuel.

This only effects a few out of the masses, so there will still be plenty of Tacomas for parts in the upcoming years.

We have 4 tacomas in our family first off. About 2 months ago, Roseville Toyota wanted 10 Tacomas for an inspection (only 95.5 - 2000 models). So my bro took his in. Turns out everything was fine. I think they were trying to see just how many of these frames were rotting. They were giving away 100 bucks and a free oil change to everyone thatbrought theres in. Seems to me like they fixed the problem in 2001.

Since it's an extended warranty, not a recall, it's only affecting trucks with serious frame perforation. I dunno about you, but seeing what some of the frames look like now, I shudder to think what they'll be looking like a decade from now, and I damn sure wouldn't want to buy one. Some of that shit is downright scary. There's a long, long thread on TTORA about it with some good pictures.

Hopefully they're not going to do something dumb like destroy the complete truck, just cuz of the frame.

That was my first thought too. Unfortunately, for those not purchased/registered before they announced this earlier this month, they'll pay back the purchase price only. The truck has to be registered before then, or bought and couldn't be registered/failed inspection because of the frame rust.

I would contact the person you sold it to, and I would also be talking with the dealership...

Depending on how long ago it was, and if they have not retitled the truck yet.. it is still tecicly yours (file for a lost title to get rid of any hand writting) becuase if you sold the truck to them in the past 30 days... they will NOT qualify for the warenty anyway... or at least thats how I read it.. Give them $4000+ to get the truck back...and cash in

I'm pretty sure us SAS guys who have modified the frame are pretty much screwed. I live in a really dry climate, and have not seen this kind of rust. I can't see them liking my shortened wheelbase/sased rig. :) I couldn't bear to see it crushed. I'd rather put a new frame under it.

Pretty much the way I feel about mine. I have not seen any issues for anyone that lives in a state that don't use salt. Toyota states this is pretty much limited to those states that do. Thank god:).

So far I have failed 40 at work with only about 7 passing, one which was my truck. When I was talking with the Toyota Rep yesterday he was wondering if I had brought in my truck for the inspection. Then he was telling the guy that was some engineer from Japan that was here checking them all out how my truck was Sased with a Land Cruiser axle. I also told the guy I had an FJ40 with a frame that looks much like the Tacomas and I wondered if they would buy it back.

I had mine inspected and it passed.

But the guy just winked at me and said that he knows that VT winters are hard on a truck haha.

The word is, at least the place I went to, he said that I could bring it back once every month if I wanted to get it checked out.

They are buying them back in Ohio for book value in execellent condition. They allowed my friend to strip off everything he wanted before turning it in. The truck just had to be driven to the dealership. The dealer didn't care what it looked like once it got there, just as long as he could drive it. He took off his lift, wheels, tires, radio, cold air intake, and ARB front bumper before retuning it. He would have been able to keep the truck if he wanted but, would have to sign a waiver releasing Toyota from all liability.

You probably never will.

We haven't failed one yet here in Memphis that I know of. I work at the largest dealership, and there are only two others in the city. I've only done 4 of these inspections so far. They've all been fine.

But at the last class I took from Toyota, we had techs down from northern Kentucky, which isn't all that far north. But it's far enough that they salt the roads. Several hundred had been bought back up there. One of the guys knew of a customer who'd bought one for $1,200 just before the recall was announced. They gave him 10 times that for the truck. :smokin:

go spend some time in Pismo... my fresh build turned to crap after a couple cruizes through the water.

I just wish I could get a new frame and start fresh with a frame off rebuild. its been chopped, buggered, chopped and plated, with covered boogers. Its the one thing that keeps me wanting to swap everything to a buggy. but I like AC in the hot desert too much to scrap the comfy cab.

Crawl under the truck yourself. Look for rust. Especially in the areas where it's shown badly above, near the rear spring hangers. How it look?

If you have zero (or light, superficial rust) they'll keep it for a couple of hours and then tell you it's fine.

If you look under there and wonder how the damn thing hasn't snapped in two, then you're a good cantidate for a check with 'TOYOTA' written on it.

Also check around ALL the crossmembers, seems to be a hot spot, at least on ours. It starts around the t-case member and goes back, almost to the gas tank :barf:

From what I have seen up here in the Mass is the 01+ are going to have the same problems. There are a few that are about rotted that come into work. We have had 2 tundras and a sequoia with rotted frames too.

 Its economics. Its cheaper to crush them than to pay out on lawsuits where some guy and his kids die because of a rotten frame. They cant risk those rotten trucks being on the street that were "supposed to be parted out" and Toyota isnt int he used parts business. Its easier and safer to smash them all. Id love to pick up a spare parts truck or two, but its the smartest move for them.

what they are doing is giving 150% of the k.b.b. high retail value. say a tacoma value is 9500.00 they 9500.00 x 1.5 14250.00 this is what the tacoma owner would get a chk. for

i dont know how there doing it where you are from but i had my frame replaced on my 01 taco, just bring it to a dealer for a frame inspection per recall and they will either undercoat it with some sort of sealer or replace the frame completely new rear leafs lower controll arms brake lines e-brake cables nut n blts etc. 2000 and older were bought back 01 and newer are frame replacements, they had mine done in three days. skimped on replacing small clips that hold gap gaurds on and whatnot but everything else seems good

Well I took my 96 2wd Taco in when the recall first started, and it passed.. even though I had just welded the upper a-arm bracket back on the frame :mad3:

Well I looked under the truck a few days ago, and the frame looked thin.. smacked it with a hammer, and it went right though...It's crazy how fast the frame rusted out.. but then again, I stopped washing the salt off of the frame during the winter months

Well I took it to the dealership, and 2 minutes later they came back and said it failed.. and Toyota Corp will be calling me in the next few days..

Great news for me since I have to lose my 2005 daily driver.. from lack of employment.. but now toyota will be giving me around $5000 for a truck thats now worth $1200 to me :D I will be upgrading to a 4wd ex-cab, double cab, or a 4runner.. with no money out of pocket :smokin:

I can't complain.. if they give me the amount that I think they will offer.
