I had recently purchased a NEW rag joint for my blazer. it has maybe 4 miles on it.
Will this work on my scout. Should I save it as a spare. Mine on my scout appears to be in "good" condition.

never had any luck with rag joints, don't run them, the shafts are the same manual and power so the ujoint style fits on the power setup, same length too, my scout II was originally manual if that matters?
ditch the rag joint,
go with a nice u joint setup like the borgeson.
just my opinion.

The rag joint for your balzer probley won't fit your scout, i tried one off of a 73 Chevy truck and the shafts where a different size, the Rubber part will interchange though keep that as a spare, i would, like the others ditch it and run a u-joint, i got rid of my rag joint last year when i swapped out the steering box and installed a Borgension joint and its much nicer (it tightened the steering up).

Well I don't know about the borgesen joints but I remember the flaming river one's being like $85.?? Little pricey for me. But getting one off of a NON-power-steering shaft sounds like a GREAT idea.
I used to think the steering on my scout was gonna suck (it always seemed to lock up at low speeds, but when I'm in gravel/dirt/ or at higher speeds (above 10mph) the steering works great so I'm gonna keep my AGR super pump as a trail spare.:flipoff2:

I used u-joints from Speedway (http://www.speedwaymotors.com) in my steering.

Hey...
I am planning on using the pickup ball-socket type on my 76'. Then cutting and welding the shaft end to my shaft with a receiver.
Then when I am really flowing with extra spending money I will do it right with an actual u-joint.
Any improvement is better than what I have right now though...a rag-joint that is pulled about 1-1/2" apart and splayed past the dowls. All that is controlling the bias-ply's is the little bit of steel that makes the collar for the insert of the rag-joint!!!
good thing my wife never saw that! She really would not have liked to wheel with me then!:D
