: Stalling/Backfiring *revisited*

Well I took my truck on the road today (and up some hills and down some hills)

Kinda wierd.... The stalling/backfiring seems to be totally random (unlike previously stated) But still *MOSTLY* happens while accelerating even mildly. Once it happened while cruising a backstreet.

BUT, it was REALLY bad while going up hill (we're talking like 25-30 degrees) and also happened once really bad accelerating in reverse.

It seemed to get a *little* better after I adjusted the timing a bit (by sound, not with a timing light, don't have one :() I turned the dist clockwise about 3-5 degrees.

So I'm thinking (almost 95% sure) that it's a backfire, since it happened once while I was leaning into the engine compartment (I was cycling the throttle) but it didn't send a flame out the carb like I'm used to seeing a backfire do.

I'm kinda at a loss here guys, I've never had this kind of problem before.

I'm gonna try disconnecting the back barrels.

Does any of this new info shed light on the situation, hope so.

THANKS

It could be that the timing is retarded some. You could have a vacumn leak. The accelarator pump nozzle is plugged or any other nozzle is plugged or partially plugged. If it is a four barrel the secondary throttle plate isn't closing completly.
This is the worst part about web wrenching, some things you need to be there for to see just what it is doing to have a better iead what the problem is.
Have fun

OK I swear I'm gonna quit asking you guys the questions and start figuring them out on my own.

I'm getting this pinned down. The cutting out seems to occure when the RPMS build slowly (under load) or quickly, while cycling the throttle while in park or neutral. So I'm thinking that I'm using fuel quicker than it's filling back up. "Low float level??"

I noticed a very small fuel leak @ the carb, where the fuel line enters. FIXED THAT.

NEXT, I'm gonna re-adjust my float level. I remember when I rebuilt the carb, that I set the float level a *little* low. I'm thinking I might have set it too low.

do you have cats on that thing, when they get plugged it can cause some strange problems. i doubt thats it but you never know.

No, no cats. Thanks anyway.

I still haven't tried the "Next time it stalls, get out, look down the carb and see if gas shoots in it when you cycle the throttle" test, that's what I hope to do next.

I guess this will tell me for sure if I'm draining the bowl, and if I need to re-adjust the float.
