: Trans. cooler
HockeyTemper 07-13-2002, 02:39 PM My auto. trans. has started to over heat, even on the highway. I'm going to install an external cooler, (Hayden 24,000GVW). Question is, install in front of the radiator, or elsewhere (under the tub), and if elsewhere will I need a 12V fan? Has anyone seen a better mount location?
orbitcat 07-13-2002, 03:39 PM If you are going to mount it elsewhere, then you'll probably need a fan on it. You won't need a fan if you mount it in front of your radiator, but you will decrease cooling on you engine radiator from blocking it slightly.
I guess you have to decide how cool your engine runs before you decide where to put it.
You will also be removing the heat load from the radiator that the tranny used to put on it. So, the radiator will cool better for just the engine.
TexasBlake 07-13-2002, 05:55 PM The one that came factory from my YJ is in front of the radiator passenger side. You can see it now since my winch is in the shop cause it went :nuke:
I would think that it could get dirty and damaged rather easy if you put it under the tub, and would get better air if in front of the radiator.
Just my 2 cents
Rockcrusher 07-13-2002, 07:11 PM I've got a 6X18 cooler that I'm going to run inline with my radiator cooler. I'm going to mount it to the top of the frame rail behind the shock tower so it's parallel to the ground. Hopefully, I'll get enough convection airflow to bring my temp down around 190° on the trail.
If not, I have 3 100CFM 5 inch muffin fans that I can mount on top of the aux cooler. With luck, it'll work.
Lt1Cj7 07-13-2002, 08:55 PM I have been looking into the same thing (Same Issue) My plan was to try to mount it the inside of my fender. I found a fan from a early 90's honda something (just wondering through pullaparts) that was about 7" just about the size of my 24000 trans cooler..
moveaside 07-14-2002, 05:54 PM Notice your key words here "its starting to overheat" If it didn't before why is it now? Have you flushed it? Is it shifting funny? Heat means friction which could mean a problem. You might want to think about that, although even if the cooler doesn't bring down the temp its not going to hurt in fact it will always help. And I don't think mounting on the rad causes a big issue the coolers are usually small. They make coolers that are built into radiators too. Maybe you could upgrade to a 3core and get that in it too if you don't have one already? Save on space and hassle. My rad has one but I got a manual so I could use it for power steering if I wanted too. But heat will kill the tranny in time for sure better to figure it out now then replace.
HockeyTemper 07-14-2002, 10:34 PM "startin'" as in......I just recently built up my '98, w/ the 3 spd. auto., and 4.88s. Haven't wheeled it yet; and I was, well.....pushing it, as far as speed goes, on the highway. (I know....sounds:rainbow: )
The 24000GVW cooler measures 11x7.75x.75, which would be a bit big in front of the radiator, esp. while at extremely low trail speeds.

I have my p-steering and tranny coolers in front of the radiator. I added a 12-V pusher fan for low trail speeds when I think they're getting hot. The mechanical fan cools the engine fine, but when running the 12-V it drops the engine temp a little also. Here's a pic

Chrisjeep7 07-15-2002, 12:12 PM i have not noticed that the auto cooler has taken away from the rad. bigger the better on trannny coolers. i can runn mine all day in and never get hot.

i dont know what size this is but it is the biggest one i could fine at pepboys
Po' riggity 07-15-2002, 09:10 PM When I did my auto swap, I put in an auto radiator, with the factory cooler, then used a perma cool aux cooler, and mounted it in front of the radiator.

High5 07-16-2002, 08:39 AM i run a dual circuit cooler from summit. i use the larger of the two circuits for the tranny along with the in-radiator cooler. i then use the smaller cicuit for my power steering. this setup works good for me.
