The rear d44 only came standard with the rubicon and Unlimited. The other models with 4.0L could have the d35 or the d44. 4 cylinder = d35 only...

For' 97 if it was a Sahara it came w/it. For all other models it needed to have the 30" tire package to have the 44 rearend. '98 had no 44 option. In '99 Jeep brought it back standard on the Sahara and on all other models w/the 30" tire package. In 2003 when the Rubicon and Unlimiteds arrived they had 44's front and rear on the Rubicon and all the Unlimiteds had 44 rears standard on all models.

I'm not so sure about this... I could be wrong, but the only Wranglers from 97 thur 2006 that came with a D44 standard were the Rubicon and the Unlimited. On the Sahara and the Sport you could order the Caynon wheels & D44 axle as a packaged deal for like $220.00 additional. I suspect most people ordered this package because they wanted the nice wheels. The SE models came with D35 only. As far as I know, the Sahara package has never been more than a fancy trim package for a Sport.

I agree but in '99 when they reintroduced the option it was so popular that they just started including on the Saharas. When I purchased mine I went to three different dealers and I didn't find any Saharas on the lot w/a 35 in the rear. I was told by all three dealers that if I wanted a 35 rear end I would have to order it as the were not being sent any from the factory.

My buddies sport has a 44, and I was thinking it was a 98 (maybe not?). It is a 4.0, 5 spd and has the aluminum wheels with 5(?) holes.
