Ham radio in the hammers

Any known useable ham radio repeater sites there? I searched but came up with nothing.

Last time I was there I tried every 2 meter and 73cm "open" repeaters that are listed. None of them came in consistently. I tried to hit them from Cougar Buttes and on the lake bed with no luck. I bet inside the canyons would be worse but some of the hilltops might be ok.

I dont have my repeater book in front of me now so I can't tell you exactly which ones I tried. I do remember off the top of my head that there were Lucerne Valley, Victorville, Yucca Valley, Big Bear, and Barstow ones that I tried.

That doesnt mean that none exist but none of the top level ones work. There may be some echo link repeaters there.

Edit: I was transmitting on 50 watts.

Yup, just got back, and no luck. Did the same things you did...research before I left, check the ones I thought might work, 50 watts, different locations, etc. Couldn't find anything that works consistently. Ran simplex the whole week.

I guess this is another project someone needs to take on!

There a a number of machines atop the San Gabriels. There are also machines around Barstow and VV. Onyx is listed as an emergency unit. It should hammer down on the hammers.

Get a SoCal repeater guide from HRO. PM if you want some freqs to try

its a longer shot....but the big bear repeater 147.330 pl 131.8 worked great for me at 08 tin benders jambo. i was able to talk back home to moreno valley no problem from my 50 watt rig in the rock crawler at main camp as well as on the trail in certain spots.
